  • 3. Sustentabilidade da fileira da vinha e do vinho• The only option to soften the impact of high oil prices that is likely to meet the magnitude of thechallenge is a transition to a low-carbon economy. But this will require political leadership and policycertainty to create a long-term, sufficient and consistent incentive structure for renewable energy.• We recommend the government employs available and new mechanisms for public sector finance, such as a Green Investment Bank to change investor behaviour in favour of new, low carbon sectors.• Adaptive responses such as investment into mass public transit systems, more efficient vehicles, people travelling less due to home working, and cheaper, low carbon energy alternatives will also allhelp.• In addition to issues of security and sustainability, the impact of economic peak oil is anotherimportant reason to reduce an economy’s energy intensity and dependence on oil.“Historical evidenceshows that shockslie in wait forunpreparednations. Wellpreparedeconomies, however, shouldstill prosper”

  • 23. Sustentabilidade da fileira da vinha e do vinho• Eco-labels provide information about the environmental characteristics of a product.Eco-labels are effective if consumers are willing to pay a price premium for greenproducts which are costlier to produce. If consumers are not willing to pay a premiumfor an eco-label why should an organization still seek certification? Are there otherbenefits associated with the certification process? We investigated this question in thewine industry, where many wineries obtain ecocertification but do not label it on theirwine bottle.• Our results show that eco-labeling has a negative impact on prices in the wine industry, while we find a price premium associated with eco-certification.• The negative result associated with ecolabeling can be explained by the lack ofunderstanding of the eco-certification process.
  • 24. Sustentabilidade da fileira da vinha e do vinho• Over 126 000 hectares of naturalarea have been conserved by BWIproducers in less than four years. This means that the SouthAfrican wine industry’sconservation footprint is well inexcess of its current vineyardfootprint of 102 000 hectares.• For every hectare under vineyard,an additional hectare of naturalvegetation is committed toconservation – and this figurecontinues to grow.BWI has received global andnational recognition for itsleading business model thatunites conservation andagricultural development in acomplementary, mutuallybeneficial manner.
  • 25. Sustentabilidade da fileira da vinha e do vinho• Dessert wines are making acomeback: These sweet, Port-stylesyrups are dark, fortified and moreversatile than you might think.• Another huge trend in the beverageworld is locally produced wine, and inparticularurban wineries, which gobeyond the tasting room to include in-house grape processing as well.• Also on the hot tip of the world: winesfrom South America. Robust bottlesfrom Chile, Argentina and evenUruguay are not only getting betterevery year, they’re getting cheaper.• South African wines continue toincrease in popularity as well, butwhen shopping for wine from thesecountries, be sure to purchasecertified fair-trade wines.
  • 26. Sustentabilidade da fileira da vinha e do vinho- Chefs are huge supporters of shoppinglocal. Bobby Flay hosted a 5K charity runwith chefs and attendees to raise moneyforWholesome Wave, a community basedorganization that improves the accessibilityand affordability of healthy, locally grownfruits and vegetables.- Buy sustainable fish. Whole FoodsMarket took a huge step forward in April2012 as the first retailer to sell onlysustainable fish. They no longer carry“red-rated” fish – species that suffer fromoverfishing or catching methods thatharm other marine life or habitats – andhopes to reverse similar globaltrends. Whole Foods Market sponsored aFishmonger FaceOff at the Food & WineClassic in an effort to educate shoppersabout responsibly caught seafood choicesand cooking tips.
