TRANSCRIPT
After
reading
this
story
what
do
you
think
it’s
about?
Their
point
of
view
of
the
visit
to
the
park,
How
many
visits
to
the
park
do
you
think
ANTHONY
BROWNE
is
telling
us
about?
One
-‐-‐-‐(Previously
when
asked
this
question
Emily
had
suggested
4
then
refined
it
to
two
“because
the
children
went
with
their
parents”
After
reading
again
she
arrived
at
the
concept
of
one.
)
Emily
justified
by
referring
to
evidence
of
the
presence
of
other
characters
in
the
illustrations
-‐
freely
ranged
across
the
pages
and
showed
details
as
her
justification)
Which
is
your
favourite
character?
Smudge
because
she
has
a
big
imagination
..a
colourful
happy
gorilla,
..she’s
a
cheerful
animal!
and
the
Mother?
She’s
a
bit
of
a
fuss
pot!
What
did
you
think
about
the
author
Anthony
Browne?
He’s
very
creative..
like
Margaret
Wild
..especially
with
the
animals
(the
gorillas)
What
do
you
think
makes
someone
a
good
reader?
…You
understand
the
book
‘cos
you
use
imagination,
you
enjoy
the
book,
you
know
what
it
says
and
actually
take
in
what
the
book
says
How
do
you
“take
it
in”
?
Can
you
tell
me
a
little
bit
more
about
that?
I
look
at
the
words
more
closely
cos
that
helps
it
make
sense,
but
if
I
read
it
again
it’s
better…and
if
it’s
a
picture
book
it’s
better
to
look
at
the
pictures
too
..especially
if
they
are
creative
like
that!
(
pointing
to
an
illustration)
What
if
you
are
reading
a
book
that
doesn’t
have
pictures?
If
you
read
the
words
carefully
and
slowly
it
will
be
painting
a
picture
in
your
mind
Do
you
ever
get
stuck
and
need
to
work
a
bit
harder
to
try
to
make
sense
of
what
you
are
reading?
What
I
do
I
look
at
it
for
a
few
seconds..read
it
over
and
over
again
until
it
makes
sense…but
I
don’t
always
do
that
(
laughs)
Sometimes
if
you
read
on
it
may
l
help
too.
(Nods
and
agrees)When
I
read
the
next
sentence
the
last
one
made
sense
The
next
sentence
is.”.and
then
the
bird”
…(
attempts
to
explain
but
gets
a
little
confused)
Does
reading
other
books
help
you
?
Yes.
Most
have
lots
of
hard
words…and
I’m
getting
very
smart
from
reading
all
these
books
and
maybe
when
I’m
not
reading
a
book
they
always
bring
up
tricky
words
and
I
know
the
answer.
Last
year
I
read
“
Heidi
and
the
Mountains”
and
she
was
in
this
place
in
Germany
and
the
next
day
there
was
a
quiz
and
if
you
get
the
answer
right
you
get
a
lolly
and
I’d
never
gotten
a
lolly
and
I
knew
the
answer
cause
it
was
Germany.
Yes
and
it
helps
your
brain
be
more
creative
and
learn
more
hard
words.
It
helps
you
to
spell
too
‘cos
I
know
how
to
spell
“sophistication”
now.
Because
you’ve
read
that
word
lots
of
times?...
YES!
And
I
know
what
it
means
and
I
know
how
to
spell
it
too…
2.
You’ve
talked
a
lot
so
far
about
reading
the
words.
When
an
author
writes
a
book
do
you
think
they
want
you
to
understand
the
words
or
to
understand
their
ideas?
Which
is
more
important?
The
ideas
I
guess
What
ideas
do
you
think
ANTHONY
BROWNE
wants
to
communicate
in
“Voices
in
the
Park?
“
It’s
about
creativity.
…I
reckon
it’s
supposed
to
be
about
making
friends
and
dealing
with
other
people
like
Charles’s
Mum
I’m
wishing
that
Charles
Mum
was
a
bit
more
relaxed.
(
Discussing
the
text
-‐browsing
and
re
reading
first
few
pages)
I’m
wondering
who
was
more
important
to
her
Victoria
(
the
dog)
or
Charles?
I
think
Victoria
was.
Even
if
she
was
yelling
out
for
him
she
might
have
been
doing
it
because
she
was
worried
people
might
think
she
was
not
a
nice
person
because
her
own
son
got
lost.
…She
doesn’t
seem
very
nice
to
him.
I
think
maybe
she
tries
to
be
a
good
Mum.[
RE
READ
“She
knew
it
was
time
to
take
Victoria…..and
Charles
for
a
walk”]
I
think
she
likes
more
about
fashion
because
it
says
“pedigree”
labrador
!
Even
Smudge
says
it
was
“a
very
posh
looking
dog”
And
the
house
and
her
clothes
are
very
posh!
..and
even
Charles’
name
‘Charles’
…He’s
very
neat!
She
treats
him
like
a
boss.
She
said
‘Sit
here’
and
she
wouldn’t
let
him
go
off
and
play
in
the
park
..not
even
with
Victoria.
She
was
very
controlling
wasn’t
she?
Maybe
she
didn’t
want
him
to
have
any
friends
because
he
might
have
more
fun.
I
reckon
Smudge
is
great.
That’s
how
I’d
dress!
I
think
Anthony
Browne
has
done
a
very
good
job
of
communicating
what
she’s
like..
What
can
you
tell
me
about
Smudge’s
Dad?
He’s
very..doesn’t
care
about
his
looks
..he’s
not
a
very
fashion
person..he
puts
on
any
clothes
that
he
has…and
see
how
they
write
the
words
…(pointing
to
change
of
font
for
the
Dad)…I
still
don’t
understand
why
he
has
man
arms
(pointing
to
illustration)
He
seems
droopy
…a
‘worn’
person
and
it
looks
like
he
really
loves
Smudge.
She’s
(Mum)
not
a
very
nice
person
..they
are
not
very
happy
at
home
Dad
he’s
probably
…he
really
loves
Smudge.
I
wouldn’t
like
to
be
in
his
shoes!
[pointing
to
Charles]
Short
Discussion
about
Visual
Jokes
and
illustrations…..
My
favourtie
page
is
this
one
-‐
the
bandstand.
It’s
very
colourful.
They
(
Smudge
and
Charles)
look
very
happy!
I
reckon
this
book
is
very
good.
It’s
now
one
of
my
favourite
books.
I
like
it
better
than
“Black
&
White”
because
B&W
seems
too
um
‘unique’!
…very
very
strange.
They’re
both
creative
in
their
own
way.
Is
that
because
of
the
characters?
I
liked
the
burglar
but
except
for
the
‘newspaper’
parents,..
you
knew
they
were
very
weird.
Do
you
still
want
to
be
an
author
one
day?
When
I
wanna
be
an
author
I
want
to
be
like
him.
It
says
just
Anthony
Browne.
That
means
he
does
the
illustrations
too.
I
want
to
illustrate
mine.
Except
for
some
books
I
want
my
sister
Katie
to
illustrate
them
because
she’s
very
good!
