Workshop 4: ready, set, design!

  1. 1. WORKSHOP FOURPrototyping+Dialogue=Features
  2. 2. WORKSHOPOVERVIEW
  3. 3. WHAT AREINTERESTING ORUSEFUL FEATURESTHAT CAN BEINCORPORATEDINTO THE PLATFORM?
  4. 4. GOALS+ find unexpected connections between possible participants and their purpose for using the platform+ to suggest possible/novel platform features and functions
  5. 5. METHODSPrototyping
  6. 6. DESCRIPTIONWorkshop Four requires rapid-fire ideation and creation. From three buckets you will choose “who,” “what,” and“how” to suggest a hypothetical context. Then you’ll designan abstracted tool that supports possible interactions withinthat context. Afterward, you will have the chance to presentyour tool and discuss it with other participants.
  7. 7. VIRTUAL +PHYSICAL
  8. 8. The remainder of this slideshow demonstrates whatphysical participants will be completing at theProposium event. As a virtual participant you will be following similar stepsfor participation, but will be using other means- such as aweb cam- to accomplish it.
  9. 9. Read the annotations found at thebottom left hand side, shown throughthe yellow plus icon:This will give you a sense of how yourvirtual participation will work in relationto the physical participant.
  10. 10. PROCESS
  11. 11. WORKSHOP 4 WHAT MIGHT A PLATFORM DO? ready, set, design! >> IS A WAY: TO SUGGEST POSSIBLE/NOVEL FEATURES AND FUNCTIONS OF THE PLATFORM FIND UNEXPECTED CONNECTIONS BETWEEN THE PLATFORM AND HOW WE WOULD USE IT
  12. 12. WORKSHOP 4: READY, SET, DESIGN! STEP 1: CHOOSE THREE PHRASES: ONE FROM EACH OF THE BUCKETS PROVIDED (5 min) WHO WHAT FOR HOW WHAT WHAT HOW WHO WHAT HOW HOW WHO WHO FOR FOR HOW WHO WHAT FOR FOR WHAT FOR WHAT HOW HOW WHO WHO FOR WHO WHAT WHAT WHAT WHO WHO FOR FOR HOW HOW HOW FOR Virtual participants may choose the phrases on the Proposium website: http://www.ncsu.edu/graphicdesign/proposium2011/workshop4-virtual
  13. 13. WORKSHOP 4: READY, SET, DESIGN!
  14. 14. WORKSHOP 4: READY, SET, DESIGN! STEP 2: THE THREE PHRASES SHOULD SUGGEST A CONTEXT TO CREATE A DESIGN TOOL (20 min) ? WHO WHAT FOR TOOL HOW we use the materials gathered (structures, surfaces, and fasteners) to create one design artifact Virtual participants record themselves via webcam, name the phrases, show the tool, explain how its features can inform possible features of the graduate network platform. Video should be 1–2 minutes long.
  15. 15. WORKSHOP 4: READY, SET, DESIGN!
  16. 16. WORKSHOP 3: STORYBOARDING 4: READY, SET, DESIGN!
  17. 17. WORKSHOP 4: READY, SET, DESIGN! STEP 3: EACH SMALL GROUP GIVES THE FINISHED TOOL TO ANOTHER GROUP TO INTERPRET (10 min) ? ? ? Virtual participants upload their videos to YouTube or Vimeo. They might also include a text-based description of the tool. To post the link to the video, please add a comment on the Proposium website: http://www.ncsu.edu/graphicdesign/proposium2011/workshop4-virtual
  18. 18. WORKSHOP 4: READY, SET, DESIGN! REMOTE REMOTE REMOTE REMOTE REMOTE VIDEOS Virtual participants upload their videos to YouTube or Vimeo. They might also include a text-based description of the storyboard. To post the link to the video, please add a comment on the Proposium website: http://www.ncsu.edu/graphicdesign/proposium2011/workshop4-virtual
  19. 19. WORKSHOP 4: READY, SET, DESIGN!
  20. 20. WORKSHOP 4: READY, SET, DESIGN! STEP 4: ALL THE SMALL GROUPS DISCUSS THE TOOLS, SUGGESTING POSSIBLE PLATFORM FEATURES (20 min) ? ? ? a volunteer scribe from each group records most common obstacles and decisions Virtual participants be sure to watch other participants’ videos, which we will embed on the page, and comment on them!
