      • In Conclusion
      Agenda
      • About 119 million, or 64.5%, of American adults are either overweight or obese.
      • Obesity may come from a habit of sitting on the couch eating junk food.
      • Many people want to exercise, but find it difficult to motivate themselves.
      Why design this device?
      • Concept
      • Integrate the system with comfortable seating in front of the user’s TV in order to encourage exercise
      • Create incentive to continue exercising by regulating power to the TV
How did we design this device?
      • Definition
      • Design a device that:
      • is inspired by a recumbent bicycle
      • requires exercise to power an electronic device
How did we design this device?
      • Requirements
      • Safe
      • Comfortable
      • Convenient
      • Easy to Operate
How did we design this device?
      • Bicycle pedals connect to gear system
      • Generator converts mechanical to electrical energy
      • Electrical energy activates device
      What is our device?
      • Series of bicycle gears with pedals
      • Aluminum frame
      • Final connection to generator shaft
What is our device? – Mechanical
      • 12V DC Generator
      • Capacitors
      • Relay
What is our device? – Electrical
    2. What is a relay?
      • 12V DC Input
      • Electromagnet
      • Switch
      • 120V AC pass-through
      • 12V DC Generator
      • Capacitors
      • Relay
      • Power strip
What is our device? – Electrical
      • Indirect
      • Capacitors take only a few minutes to charge completely.
      • Capacitors last about 5 minutes.
      • User must generate power for relay.
      • Power from wall is almost certainly safe and consistent.
      • Direct
      • Battery takes about 2.5 hours to charge completely.
      • Battery lasts about 6 hours.
      • User must generate power for television.
      • Power from the generator may be inconsistent and cause problems with the device.
      Why design an indirect system?
    3. Safety
      • The wide base of the frame ensures stability.
      • All electrical connections are isolated and insulated to guarantee that no short circuits will occur.
      • The use of an enclosed relay aids electronic isolation.
      • Users sit in their seat of choice for and
      • Power generated by pedaling activates the relay, closing a circuit to the TV.
      • Power is stored in the capacitors to allow for time to get a drink or go to the bathroom for
      Summary simply convenience. comfort safety.
      • Condense gear system
      • Explore direct alternative
      • Streamline electrical system
      • Add a derailleur
      What’s Next?
      • The Couch Potato Exerciser
        • Provides a safe, convenient method of exercise through a recumbent bicycle design
        • Provides an incentive for exercise through use of a television
        • Provides a comfortable, adaptable, in-home experience
      In Conclusion…
      • Our client, Steve Jacobson
      • Our EDC Professors, Tom Rochow and Charles Yarnoff
      • Our experts, Tom Cohlmia, Art Schmidt, and Steve Jacobson
      • Our advisers in the shop, Steve Jacobson, Scott Simpson, and Bob Taglia (especially Scott for the food)
      • Kristen Cox for use of her multigear.
