      • (10 miles north of Salt Lake City)

      • 3 rd largest school district in Utah
      • 59,366 students/78 total schools

      • 33 classrooms in Davis District for students with significant behavior issues
      • In Utah, 1 in every 130 females is diagnosed with autism; 1 in every 95 males (2007 NIMH)

      • Four highly skilled paraeducators
      • Supervised by two district behavior specialists
      • Provide temporary behavioral support to the most difficult students in the district
      • Rely on research based interventions (principles of applied behavior analysis)

      • Typically work with individual students (usually SPED classified)
      • Help implement, change, & manage behavior and safety plans
      • Collect data
      • Model the implementation of interventions for school staff
      • Provide training to paraeducators, teachers, principals, parents, etc.
    10. Why is Behavior Management So Important?
      • We have ever increasing numbers of difficult to manage students
      • Misbehavior of ONE student can jeopardize the learning of ALL students
      • The ultimate success or failure of formal learning rests primarily with what happens in the individual classroom
    11. What We Know About Behavior
      • Behavior is any observable and measurable action
      • Almost all behavior is learned
      • Almost all behavior is communication
      • All behavior serves a function:
        • To get something
        • To avoid something
        • Some behaviors must be DIRECTLY taught
        • Positive programs for behavior are most effective
        • Educators CAN manage tough behavior (with effort!)

        • Data (oh yeah!!!)
        • Research Based Interventions
        • Understanding Students on the Autism Spectrum

      • Type & level of support depends on the presenting problem behavior and the school
      • Gradual and ongoing fading of support is critical
      • *Set up as TEMPORARY
      • *Give them the tools (example & actual tangible items)
      • *Ongoing support
      • *Success breeds confidence

      • Build HEALTHY relationships with school staff and students
      • Collect/analyze/use DATA
      • Knowledge of underlying characteristics of a variety of disabilities
      • Understand the principles of behavior
