  1. 1. HealthLine Q. I’ve had recurring back pain for quite a while now. Is it time for me to consider surgery? A. Spine surgery is a solution for patients whose lumbar (lower back) pain has not responded favourably to conservative, non-operative treatments over a 6-12 month period. Spine surgery is most commonly suggested as a treatment for conditions including degenerative disc disease, spondylolisthesis, spinal stenosis, scoliosis and fractured discs. However, the decision to undergo surgery should be individualised to the patient and the patient’s symptoms, along with their level of function. Q. What is Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery (MISS)? Is it successful? A. Yes, MISS has been used successfully for many years. It is clear that MISS allows more rapid recovery and return to work/sports. There is less post-operative pain and a shorter hospital stay. The scope, complexity and procedures available continue to evolve at a rapid rate. Q. What is robotic-assisted spine surgery? Is it a part of MISS? A. MISS is the direction in which much of the medical field is headed and robotic surgery is the future. A surgical robot is an operating room machine completely controlled by a skilled surgeon, who manipulates mechanical arms from a console near the patient’s bed. Q. How does robotic-assisted spine surgery work? A. A surgeon operates several precision-guided robotic arms that hold and manipulate miniaturised instruments that are inserted through keyhole-sized incisions in the patient. A small video camera, inserted through another tiny incision, provides surgeons with a magnified 3D image of the operating site. This expansive view allows doctors to see and avoid surrounding nerves and muscles. The robotic arms, with their ability to rotate 360 degrees, enable surgical instruments to be moved with greater precision, flexibility and range of motion than in standard minimally invasive laparoscopy. Depending on the condition being treated, patients often only spend one night in the hospital and are usually discharged as soon as their laboratory tests are acceptable, pain is controlled, and are able to retain liquids.
