• ELI is the Extended Learning Institute at NOVA. Commonly referred to as ELI or E-L-I. The first classes began in 1975 as corresponded courses. Today we have over 300 courses with 300 teaching faculty from all 6 campuses. All faculty are based out of a campus even if they are solely teaching online. Courses are offered in 8, 12, 16 week sessions & ELI offers 19 Associate Degrees, 3 certificates & 13 Career Studies Certificates. As you can see from this breakdown ELI has just over 11,000 students (unduplicated headcount) which would make it the 3 rd largest NOVA campus – if it was a campus.
• As you can see from this breakdown ELI has just over 11,000 students (unduplicated headcount) which would make it the 3 rd largest NOVA campus – if it was a campus. Types of ELI students…
• ELI has a fairly large student services staff. There are Counselors and Success Coaches who serve as student Advisors, each Counselor has a specialty such as: Disability, Veterans, Prior Learning, Transfer, Career & Duel Enrollement. ELI has its own financial aid specialist and has a registrar, registration staff & course specialists. ELI has a Librarian which is a new position and a tutoring and testing specialist and Bridget and I make up Orientation and Student Life.

• Degrees from properly accredited schools are accepted by employers in the same way that traditional degrees are accepted. In fact, there is usually nothing on a diploma to indicate that courses were taken online.
• Instructors & students communicate in a variety of ways. Email, phone, Blackboard Collaborate or eNOVA web conference software, wimba - a voice recording software used in World Language courses. ELI has a live chat that students (and prospective students) can communicate with staff), ELI has a 24 hour/7 day a week hotline number that students can use to contact staff. Course specific questions would need to go to Instructors, but if students can not contact or get in touch with an instructor they often call the hotline for assistance in reaching that instructor.
• Again, the key word is accredited Colleges/Universities. Yes, NOVA online courses transfer to four year universities just like on campus courses would. In fact, courses taken online through ELI appear the same as courses taken on campus on a students official transcript.
• This depends upon the student, the program, and the school. Learning is different for everyone and part of our job is to work with students to know what will work best for that individual. There are the extremes: this class will be easy since it is online and they don’t put the effort in and don’t succeed and others think they couldn’t possibly take a class online because it would be too hard and don’t even try. Which leads us into the next topic: Is Distance Learning for Me?
• The focus of this is on the perspective student. When students call asking about information about ELI courses there are 5 questions that they are asked. They are also directed to a webinar that they can take part in to find out more information. This webinar is only offered once a month, so often advisors and coaches are working with students one on one to determine their success. NOVA recently acquired an assessment geared towards perspective and new students to gage their success in distance learning courses. Smarter Measure is a tool that will help assess strengths and opportunities for growth related to distance learning in 6 areas: Life factors, Individual attributes, Learning styles, Technical competency, skills & knowledge, Reading rate and recall, and Typing speed and Accuracy.
• The focus of the Orientation is on students who are new to distance learning. The webinars are free and optional Pre-Survey Question: What questions do you have about your ELI distance learning course or student services? The topics covered are eNOVA basics: which covers the basics of the tool that we use for the webinar. NOVA also uses this tool for real time class meetings and some instructors use it for office hours or e-meetings with students. Introductions: of presenters – myself and the Student Technology Support Specialist. We also ask the students a round of questions (Is this your first semester at NOVA? Are you a part time student? Are you new to DL? And age category). Quick Start Syllabus: a document students receive in the postal mail before courses begin. Blackboard Overview: The student tech support specialist goes through what a Bb course site looks like – shows an app share, so the students can see what their course will look like. She goes through each tab in detail. Taking Exams: lots of questions about testing. We talk about taking exams on campus, off and through proctor U which is aweb monitoring proctoring system. Student Services: we do an app share to show what resources are available. Tips for Success: talking about being successful as a distance learning student. Post-Survey Questions: This Orientation helped me understand my ELI course better? Yes/no type question What additional topics would you like to see presented in this format? All sessions are recorded and all participants receive a follow up email within 24 hours of the session with the link to review the recording. I find that when I send the follow up I often get comments back from that, after they had some time to process the information. This webinar has been the Orientation for new to distance learning students for the past 5 years. The program is expanding to include this webinar in video format as well as in person sessions.
• As an introduction to ELI and distance learning, we had our 1 st annual common reader program. We used the book, In the Hot Zone, by Kevin Sites. Kevin is a journalist for Yahoo news and travels to 20 countries to cover 20 wars in one year. Each chapter is a different journey and he writes about each war. We invited 525 students in 60 courses including SDV, English, Photo Journalism to participate. We had a symposium with the author as a guest speaker, he shared video clips and stories of his journey.
• Librarian, tutoring, Orientation, Student Life events, Advisors, disability services, veteran services, transfer services, prior learning, career, online testing, and more.
• How we do it… - Collaboration with others – ELI staff (Orientation specialist, student success coaches, librarian, technology support specialist) & Faculty - Technology – used as a tool, not the solution. High tech & high touch
• Different student services staff make up social media team. We run themes on twitter, facebook and the Student Blog relating to: careers, advising, transfer to help guide ELI students to have the full learning experience. Social Media is a great tool to use as creating leadership opportunities & community.
