Keywords Once you learn database searching, research will become much easier. Databases don’t understand natural language! Break your topic down into concepts or specific keywords. If you only remember one thing from today, remember this!
Today’s topic… The capability of the UN to effectively intervene in cases of genocide. UN United Nations
Human rights, Natural rights
Connecting Keywords Example: where Should we go to eat!? Jane wants sushi John wants Thai food
Sushi AND Thai
Sushi OR Thai http://www.flickr.com/photos/waytru/1889641852/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/45688285@N00/2168922858 http://www.flickr.com/photos/lollaping/3555466066/
Sushi NOT Thai
Connecting Keywords A OR B A AND B A NOT B
Refining and Broadening You may find you need to adjust your search based on your results. Too many results…refine Add another keyword Narrow down by geography, age, gender Change where you’re searching (ex: title instead of keyword) Not enough results…broaden Use OR to connect synonyms
My Search Now let’s choose a database… UN OR “united nations” AND intervention OR intervene OR mediation AND genocide
