Lately, Some subjects like the veil, Polygamy, and Divorce in Islam have become objects of discussion and dispute upon which the mass media, especially the western ones, shed light. What is the veil, Polygamy, and Divorce in Islam? In this Book: A Dialogue between a Western Orientalist and a Muslim Savant about: - The Verity of the Philosophy of the Veil in Islam - The Importance of Marriage Contract - The Verity of Polygamy in Islam. - The Verity of Divorce in Islam Is it the cover screening only the hair? Or it is the whole cover screening all the body with the face? What is the wisdom behind it? And what are the Qur’anic proofs (verses) that indicate it and decide its nature? O Islam… What is divorce for?! What is more than one wife for?!

  5. 5. Is the Veil a Calumny in Islam! Truth… or... Falsehood!A Dialogue between a Western Orientalist and aMuslim Savant about the Verity of the Philosophy ofthe Veil in Islam The Importance of Marriage Contract† The Western scholar: You, most of the Easterners, hold fast to hereditary traditional norms in vain. These norms bequeath you diseases and psychiccomplexes that cause depression for your boys andgirls. Thus you cut off all connections and socialrelations in separating the two sexes. You covercharms, beauties and juvenility in jet-black curtainsthat do not suit modern civilization. And your womenlurk in houses. Where is the freedom then? You areearmarked in backwardness and retardation. Why arethis complexity for and the separation between thesexes? Give them freedom until their motives arereplenished. Then they will be bored and thesepsychosexual motives will be extirpated. Let theyoung man and the young woman set out in buildingup their country while the motives cooled down andthe instincts were put out where the spirit was boredand exhausted of them, and its burning fire isextinguished. Then, they prepare themselves forconstruction and the work for fruitful production foraffluence. From this side I know that you are going to Page 5
  6. 6. answer in definite replies without logic or proof oreven a dialog. You are going to tell me that this isadultery and interrupt the discussion without anyunderstanding, consciousness or perception.* The Muslim scholar: My brother, the Westernscholar... Is that all without marriage contract?† The Western scholar: By God, my dear brotherArab Muslim… Is that ‘the paper’ which you write! Is that the thing, which makes the prohibited licit, otherwise the one enters a bonfire that burns him forenjoying beauty depriving him from paradise? Isn’tGod the Spring of All Beauty and He loves Beautytoo! How couldn’t the creature practice praying forlove and beauty except by this paper that can beblown with the wind?* The Muslim scholar: My brother, the Westernscholar…I shall go on in the dialog a little in order toarrive at the results of this paper, and you canevaluate the problem by its results and ends. Let ussuppose we have refused the paper so the young manloves the beautiful girl. She also loves him and theyhave practiced love without the paper and procreatedboys and girls. Then the lover dies suddenly. Thequestion: Who will take care of the boys and girlsand this beloved woman broken at the death of herprotector who plucked the flower of her youth andthrew her without security in destitution, poverty, lowness and disgrace? What is the destiny of theorphan children? Surely, the inheritors of the young Page 6
  7. 7. man and his family will throw the orphans and theirmother to the street because their illegal father diedand calamity befell on his widow and his children.Yes, the inheritors, like a brother, a sister, a father, and a mother and relatives, will take with themeverything: beds, chattels, victuals, drinks and theresidence by the power of law. They will say to them‘the inheritance is for the legal kinsmen, and youshall have the stone’. Then my brother westernscholar for the sake of beauty and consummation youcan see what did what you called a mere paper do,i.e. ‘the Marriage Lines’. If that paper could makefrom the adulteress an honest woman and from thechildren of the adulteress respectable legal sons, could anyone rob the legacy of their father or drivethem out of their residence. They will become poorand criminals, enemies of the severe society as theysee it, only because of this paper! What will thecommunity call the woman ‘an adulteress prostitute,or an honest wife’? Who would like to share life withher as a wife and her offspring a heavy burden and anearmark of shame? Where is her inheritance? Howcould she live in prostitution after her youth witheredaway? How could she bear the difficulty andbitterness of life? Who will befriend her? All thesetroubles are because of the paper that you mocked at,my dear! This is the law of the Merciful God. This isa part of a reply to the second section of your logicalquestion. Let us tackle the first part of it.† The Western scholar: My brother Muslim scholar,I do not know what to say. In fact, you surprised me Page 7
  8. 8. in your humane scientific reply, which I have neverthought to be found in your religion. Verily, there issublime elevated Aminence in your religion thatcontains mercy and social security in its affection.Nevertheless, it is a fortified fortress for the widowand her children for a life filled with joy andhappiness… Please, give me more of gnomes of yoursublime wise religion. I have never heard of suchlogical discussion in the studies of the Islamicreligion. But how did you get the veil for the woman?A complete veil where there is no vestige in it for anentertainer. I’d like to tell you that a few days ago Iwas roaming down the alleys of the very old citylooking for the ruins of the fathers and the forefathersduring the forenoon where I was attacked by a black‘ghost’. It appeared suddenly and I jumped up intothe air in fright. But it passed me peacefully. Perhapsit was a young beautiful woman, but the loose jurallyveil curtained her even her face. The veil gave her theshape of a fearful black ghost… By God! What is thisfearful Islamic uniform for?* The Muslim scholar: Verily, dear scholar, it is afearful sight… to repel the Satan of the spirit and itsfatal whim, to repulse from her abomination anddisgrace, and to look away from illicit and to look forthe licit and accept it. By intention, we have designedthis uniform for our women.† The Western scholar: You have liked thisabnormal and discordant uniform to hide beauty, charm and juvenility? Page 8
  9. 9. * The Muslim scholar: Yes… When we allmaintained ‘veil’ from the time of the honorableMessenger (CPTH) in Al-Medina, the strikingproduct was that we reserved the inclinations of theyouth from the adolescence stage, then we guidedthem toward the Good, virtue and consummation, andthey darted in matchless conquests never heard ofbefore by mankind. Many nations applied andaccepted the veil. Most Asiatic and African peoplesaccepted it because of its sublimity by their own freewill, moreover; many European nations adopted it. Infact, we preserved all Freudian sex powers by thiscurtain or veil and directed them toward the Goodand production.† The Western scholar: What do you say? Do youmean by this wonderful veil you reigned and led thecountries of the world? Please, more clarification, details and explanations.* The Muslim scholar: O, the scholar who islooking after reformation. You visited our houses inits Arabic style of building, and you saw theirairiness and vastness, aren’t they so?† The Western scholar: Yes, my Muslim brother.Verily, I am amazed at their designs in construction. While we are in zigzagged old roads without art ordesign, I entered some old-fashioned Arab houses, Iwas extremely astounded at their vast yards and largecourts surrounded with basins, and planted with Page 9
  10. 10. flowers and fruitful trees of various kinds, andvineyards hanging with punches of grapes. While the scent and fragrance of jasmines, narcissi, carnations, lilies perfumed the place. No need to sayabout the ponds with flowing sparking water. Thereis an orchard with hanging fruits in every house andthe walls and the doorways reflect the green color ofthe garden. Thus I wondered from the despicableroads and the majesty and beauty of the houses withflourishing gardens. Why?* The Muslim scholar: What you said is true. Weare Muslims and we did that on intention and design. We made the roads zigzagged and narrow where lightcould rarely penetrate them. In return for that wemade paradises from our houses. Thus we realizedwondrous miracles in the conquests. Suppose acertain man was lost in the jungles for a few monthsplucking the fruits and living on natural plants thenhe met a woman whatsoever the degree of her beautyshe had. Won’t his heart incline to her, and accept herin this arid land from people or with loss of women inthe jungles. Doesn’t he accept her a partner to his lifein these virgin lands? Do you think he will accept analternative for her? Surely, he will find her a gift from heaven or anangel landed from orbits… In the apex of their glory, the Muslim used to live that way. Wherever you goor travel or walk in a marketplace or a street, youshall find the harsh sex everywhere. There is no Page 10
  11. 11. presence of a female except in the black shadows, which do not attract attentions or arouse charm. Thewomen rest in Arabic houses like paradise. If afemale wants to go out, she will find nothing butnarrow roads that do not fill the eye with joy, and donot enjoy the viewer as the roads are void of abeautiful scene. Thus she prefers to stay in herbeautiful house, and the man will not see outside hishouse or in his work except the harsh sex like him asif he were apart from the fair sex; like the man of thearid land or of the jungles. Whenever he enters hishouse and sees his female, i.e. his wife, and no oneother than ‘women of forbidden degree ofconsanguinity’. Thus in contrast with the harsh sex,he finds his wife as an invaluable blessing. In thisrespect he does not see any other woman morebeautiful than his wife. In seclusion; in her house, thewife does not see any other man than her husband, she cherishes with him and she realizes all herdreams.† The Western scholar: In fact, I hear strange thingsand concepts that were never heard of before…Please give me more of these brand new things. Beblessed for your knowledge.* The Muslim scholar: This overall screen or veilthat also covers the face is not new at the Muslimwhereas it was since their early life in Al-Medinawhere God supported his honorable Messenger andordered him and the Muslim women to wear the veil.As well as, the moving out of the Jew of BaniQai’noka’a took place when they belittled the veil of Page 11
  12. 12. Al-Ansar Muslim woman and tried to take it off herface, a passer-by Muslim defended her and the Jewskilled the defender. Thus God’s Messenger (CPTH) drove them out ofAl-Medina and then from the entire Arab peninsula. The veil continued to exist, and prestige and victorycontinued to exist until the Muslim disregarded it inthe twentieth century for that the Jews disdainedthem and they became the weakest among thenations. Thus we perceive the values of the screenand the veil. The veil was imposed on all heavenlyreligions. In the thirties of the twentieth century allthe Christian and Jewish women were veiled in thealleys and marketplaces. As for the Muslim, therewas no unveiled woman until 1950. There was noteven a Muslim woman that could uncover her face inAl-Sham cities, Lebanon, Al-Ghouta at all and also inall Islamic and Arab countries. The unveiling inEgypt was a little before when the poet HafezIbrahim said: ‘I do not say, leave the womenunveiled as men roaming in the market places’. In Great Britain the veil was prevailing even thearistocratic women used to attend the Shakespeareantheater and sit veiled in closed galleries in order tosee the social Shakespearean literary masterpieces.† The Western scholar: Truly, I heard of that and Iforgot it. If you didn’t remind me, it would be lost ina state of oblivion: God blesses you. Continue,Brother. Page 12
  13. 13. * The Muslim scholar: Verily, the screen and theveil are important problems. If they were left andignored, the capacities of the young men and womenwould be sucked by the sexual sides, their moneywas lost and their hearts were occupied by the charmsof beauty, and ‘the Freudian Assumption’ wouldmaster their minds, and their efforts for building uptheir country would be in the precipice of sex ofwhich the western scientists said, ‘any person fellinto it, he would never be rescued’. The sexual outset will be their chief concern. Thusthey neglect every innovation and invention. Theywill lose their worldly life and their Lifeafter whiledrowned in sex and its frivolities: singing, mirth, music, dolls and expensive fancy perfumes; diversityin clothes, and the military effort for the protection ofthe country is lost, for they are plunged in charms inattaining that joy through the taboo channel. If wecould organize the problems of screens and veils asGod and his Messenger (CPTH) did; the young menand women will consecrate themselves for buildinghigh up, as did their fathers and the disciples of thegreat messengers of God. The young men and theyoung women will have both realized their goals. Thesexual drive will be satisfied only in marriage. Andboth sexes will undertake to build a good country orrather a reformer for mankind, and every one will bein his/her own world for which he/she was born. When we applied this law we conquered the wholeworld and we were the best nation sent out for people Page 13
  14. 14. ordering the Good and repulsing the Evil. But wenowadays became a nation that let other nationslaugh at our ignorance. Thus we have not endeavoredto win this worldly life and we are unable to competewith the greater states, so we have not done anythingfor our life-after where, previously by our faith wemastered the world and led the nations to light andhappiness in this world and the hereafter. Now my free European brother give me your ear toanswer your first inquiry when you said the co-existence of the two sexes and the release of thedesires will quench the affections and cool down theinstincts even to death. I say that what fact decides is: First: The sexual instinct is inborn in every living creature, and it is liable to be excited on viewing beauty and the charm of the body. So long man eats and drinks, the material of life originates in him, which he was created of, is still there and it can come out in arousing it by charm and beauty. Second: The morals that grew and integrated cannot destroy the sexual instinct forces, but it can direct them towards the Good. Moreover, the complete morals cannot change the present psychic laws. These remarks will be clear when tackling the subject of the veiling and the unveiling. Page 14
  15. 15. Marriage and Adultery† The Western scholar: My brother, the Muslimscholar, you have shown in a statement beyonddispute that the paper or ‘the Marriage Lines’ isimportant and is a basic thing for building a high, advanced and virtuous community and likewise is theveil. Could you explain to me the value of marriageand its importance in order to clarify everything?* The Muslim scholar: My brother, the freethoughtful European scholar: Marriage: is theoriginator of the first social rules because it is thefounder of the family and it is, as we know, the firstlink in the chains of the greater community. It is alsoa device for setting out a beautiful life immersed inaffection and intimacy. The upbringing of boys andgirls in a family milieu imbibes them with finefeelings from their first days of life, and promotes inthem the friendly feelings that prepare them forfuture life and reveals in them mercy and clemency. If there were no marriage, the human race wouldhave been extinguished a very long time ago. Theperpetuation of life and its continuity on this Earthrequire prosperity and continuance of marriage.† The Western scholar: What is the effect ofadultery and its social and individual effect?* The Muslim scholar: Adultery has a veryretroactive act. It is the drive of corruption in thecommunity, and the propagator of chaos and the Page 15
  16. 16. lethal of progeny. When a young man rushes atwhoredom, he catches an axe in his both hands inorder to destroy the pillars of the nation.† The Western scholar: Do you have otherexamples to convince me?* The Muslim scholar: Suppose that the young manhooked a girl in this errant way, he will pass with hera long time, but he will be bored of her when he seesher beauty withering in the hands of years. He willforsake her to another woman. He will leave her atthe door of aging liable to misery and poverty. If shecould find a job to keep at subsistence level, whatabout her fate if she became ailing for work? Howhard life is! How its pains are aching in deprivationof a husband and children.† The Western scholar: What about the young manwho got used to the way of adultery?* The Muslim scholar: If we want to comment onthe single young man who got used to the way ofadultery in his future, we shall find one of twosituations: Desertion of marital life as to stay all his life goingon along this despicable way, and he will not cherisha family life or participate in reviving the community, and he will be liable to the diseases arising from thislife. He is no more than a destroying axe of thehappiness of every young woman whom he made Page 16
  17. 17. illegal relation with. When youth is gone and old agecomes, this frivolous man will not find a supportingson beside him and not even a beloved relative, thensorrows will pervade him, and misery will burn himin the dark evening of his life.† The Western scholar: But, my brother Muslim, life is long, and the door of marriage is always openuntil he finds a young woman to accept him as ahusband even if he became fifty years old.* The Muslim scholar: If he married a pretty girlwhen his freshness begins slanting towards wiltingafter a long time he passed in the arms of prostitutes,no wonder he seeks a good-looking woman. But thistender woman he chose; being in her prime youthwill not be happy in his company after he had passeda long course of his life.† The Western scholar: Please, explain to me more?* The Muslim scholar: A charming beautiful wifewill not like to live with a husband at the evening ofhis life. Her eyes will look for men of better healthand younger than him and all of a sudden she willwalk into adultery to bring forth illegal children toher legal husband. If this father died, the illegalbrothers will share the inheritance with their legalbrothers from the mother-side. Thus corruption willprevail in this miserable shattered house. Page 17
  18. 18. † The Western scholar: What about the wife if shewere virtuous and accepted her husband and sufficedherself for the legitimate marital life than a sinfulone?* The Muslim scholar: If that young wife couldrestrain the caprice of her sexual desire and sheforbore herself and did not follow the road toprostitution, her aspirations will remain suppressedand her spirit covered in sorrows. Suffice it to sayabout the ruination that befalls the children of thatfamily. Due to the fragile sentimental relationbetween the father and the mother, they will inheritfeeble formation, which I shall elucidate after awhile. Thus life will never be serene for the adultererand the adulteress even if they enter a legal maritallife. Ennui and boredom will spread over their lifecovered with sorrows, and their cauterized heartswere spoilt by sin and smeared by crime. This is thedestiny of adultery. It is the cause of misery for bothsexes in the future life. It is the attenuation andannihilation of the offspring, and the extirpator ofvirtues from the horizons of life, and it is the eraserof happiness from the pages of life too. Anyaggression on the honors is neverthelessaccompanied with an aggression which covers allother social affairs. How wide the difference isbetween the results of the marital life and the life ofadultery and sin. In the former, virtues thrive, and thefine feelings grow, and the atmosphere saturated withharmony and sympathy. While in the latter, instinctscontrol and man degraded to the animal level. Page 18
  19. 19. Instincts absented the upper humane affections, andthere will be a gloomy future void of a sympathy ofthe relatives and the help of progeny.† The Western scholar: I discovered problems; Ihave never thought of all my life until you explainedto me their wisdom concerning the veil and marriageand the way of sin and its clear effect on the socialand the individual level. What about the unveiling ofthe face?* The Muslim scholar: The unveiling leads to thedeterioration of the community towards vice. Itcontains the breakup of the ties of the family life. It isthe cause of weakness of the formation of progeny, and the sewer of alienation, dissension and severity athome and its youths. Finally, unveiling eliminatessatisfaction from the spirits of the people, and itevokes their discontent, and under the shadows ofdiscontent nothing grows save the human misery andsocial suffering. Page 19
  20. 20. The Effect of Unveiling upon the Spirits of Single Young Men and Women† The Western scholar: I hope for more explanationand elucidation?* The Muslim scholar: Here is to you, my brother, the explanation and the elucidation: Let us firstdiscuss the effects of unveiling in the spirit of thesingle young man and in the spirit of the single youngwoman. Whatsoever said about backing the unveilingfrom garnish of speech, the real fact is refuting. Theysay that if the morals are integrated and becomestrong with the two sexes, then the unveiling does notcause deterioration and breakup. I say: if the moralsgrew and integrated it cannot destroy the sexualpotency. Whenever the thirsty young man is loomedwith beautiful faces, and tender voices talk to him, hecannot but tends to pinup girls in infatuation ofbeauty. This is the first step towards adultery, andyou say the same thing about the thirsty girl. She willslip herself to her young friend, and if we do not wantto take into consideration what reality offers us typesof vice as a result to these first social connections, itis enough to say that these connections forwardanxiety and arouse sleeplessness, and how could theyouths continue in building up the future and befaithful to work, to study, and to job after the feelingsbecome vivid with the spectrum of sexual life, andthe barrages are set up, and the valve of instinct iscalled upon to commit sin. Page 20
  21. 21. Instinct is blind and it does not differentiatebetween the Good and the Evil; and even if thethought overcomes it after it has been awakened bythe sight of the pinups and it is shackled in cuffs, thatis sheer suppression, which is more than evil andcunning, two struggling forces in the square of thespirit, the force of the raging crazy instinct and theforce of conscious distinguishing thought. If theconscious one overcame the spirit would enter thepain of depression and the second stayed in anger tillit finds feeding, but if the other overcame, that wouldbe the worst. A community contracted with unveiling will neverknow the way of reassurance to the hearts of itsyouths because the factors of excitation are activeand the sexual motive is agitated. It is seen in thesemilieus where unveiling and celibacy are prevailingthat the kind of joke becomes so instinctive that alltalks for fun are linked with the milestones of sexualcommunication or something like that to satiate theinstinctive thirst which has been inflamed by thecatastrophe of unveiling! Could anyone believe that the Godly Hand thatmade this vast universe crowded with the wonders ofcreation and the grandeur of formation form thesespirits in the situation of fearful rottenness and sheerdecline? Nay! The Hand formed these spirits pureand dirtless but the ways in which they behave spoiltthem. The unveiling exposes both sexes to the charmof look, and look leads to talks sown with Page 21
  22. 22. expressions of endearment, flirtation and after thatthe deprived thirst leading to a drink from the basinsof meanness and harlotry. Page 22
  23. 23. The Effect of Unveiling on the Class of Married People* The Muslim scholar: It is time now to discuss theeffect of unveiling on the class of married people: The bonds that tie the hearts of men to their wivesbegin to loose little by little in a community where itswomen are unveiled. The married man, although heis satiated sexually, will look at women that are farbetter than his wife in shapeliness and beauty. If hischaracter is strong to keep himself from deviation, itdoes not prevent him from desiring and lamenting. He will wish for a wife like the same one who islooking at, in grace and beauty. The wish willincrease with passing of days and with moremeetings with beautiful unveiled women. Thesewishes will change into lamentations within himselfand becomes resentful upon his bad luck. The samething can be said about his wife who was seen bymen and she saw men. Surely she will meet a manthat possesses some factors that put him above herhusband in superiority, and in many other sides. Shewill step the first pace and the second pace, i.e., inwishing and lamenting… Now let us concentrate on this family and see whatwill follow: 1) Coolness of passion between them for the heart of each one is attached to someone else than his companion. He or She does not see in Page 23
  24. 24. his or her companion save a person whom He or She will pass the rest of life with. In this world there are many husbands who are better than this husband, and there are many wives who are more beautiful than this woman. This is the fixed idea that will be concentrated in the minds of the spouses in the community of the unveiling, and it will surely weaken the sexual marital bonds between them.† The Western scholar: Would you please explainto me this weakness of the sexual marital bonds, anddoes it have any influence upon the offspring?* The Muslim scholar: 2) Practical scientific researches showed that the coolness between the man and his wife is reflected on the sexual copulation in its worst reflection because the loss of the flaming affection between the couple leads to the weakness of the offspring and its tender physiological formation. When affection is activated and strong, it will produce a lot of Good at the time of the instinctive sexual intercourse. It has the most effect in producing children of sound bodies and normal formation, and vice versa. Most ailments that are contracted to children are usually inherited because of the estrangement, which is concentrated in the spirits of the parents, when they meet in a marital approach. Page 24
  25. 25. 3) It can be added that the waning of affection from the atmosphere of the house makes the children live in an arid medium of affection. This will be reflected in their fresh spirits and it will implant the seeds of hardness in their hearts while they are at the doorstep of life and to stamp it with grudge. 4) At last, the unveiling scatters consent from the spirits of people as I said, and it will evoke resentment in their hearts upon ill-luck and life. It is said: that happiness can never be realized in a certain community unless the element of consent is fulfilled among the individuals because the lamenter for his ill- luck is wretched even if he wallows in luxury. Nothing can evoke happiness in life as consent. In the Holy Qur’an, there is no one verse orders the women to unveil their faces, but on the contrary, the order has been issued from Al’lah the Almighty by covering all over the body with the face completely. Now let us listen to the Word of God and He is themost Omniscient in the laws of the obedient men andthe ways of their Good, and He is the LovingMerciful for them. He orders the veil and shows itswisdom to the Ladies of the Messenger (CPTH) whoare the examples for the Muslim women to followthem up. God said in Al-Ahzab Fortress: “…andwhen ye ask (his Ladies) for anything ye want, ask Page 25
  26. 26. them from behind a screen, that makes for greaterpurity for your hearts and for theirs…”The Holy Quran,Fortress (33) Al-Ahzab (The Combined Clans), verse (53). Since there is unveiling to the face, as they claim,so, where is the screen? Page 26
  27. 27. The Definition of the Veil in Language and legislation† The Western scholar: What does this Fortressmean by the veil, what is the essence of the veil?Does the word contain the uncovering of the faceonly or to screen the body alone, or the fullness?* The Muslim scholar: The veil in language is tocurtain vision completely or to lose sight. ThisFortress explains the veil and it does not accept itunless it is used to screen all the beauties of thewoman, the case that fills the heart with desire, and itcontaminates it by the germ of libido, and keeps fromthe woman only her speech from behind a curtain.God said, “O consorts of the Prophet! Ye are notlike any of the (other) women: if ye achievedAl’lah’s Light (being protected against ill-desires),be not too complaisant of speech, lest one, inwhose heart is disease, should be moved withdesire…”The Holy Quran,Fortress (33) Al-Ahzab (The Combined Clans), verse (32). Speech, despite the covering veil and the hindrancefor seeing the beautiful face, must be very seriousand resolute and tenderness never comes through it indialect nor fineness in tone or statement, and noextremity in subject. God has ordered women to stay at home wheretheir valuable productive work lies for bringing upboys and girls and to prepare the future generation Page 27
  28. 28. sound in body and mind. But if they were obliged togo out, they must safeguard themselves for the publiccharacter and for the safety of the hearts of all thepeople, and to be refined by following jurisprudence.God said: “And stay in your houses and make nota dazzling display, like that of the former Times ofIgnorance...”The Holy Quran,Fortress (33) Al-Ahzab (The Combined Clans), verse (33). I would like to recite the honorable ayah (verse)from An-Nur Fortress, which describes to us thecomplete social system, which was prescribed for theideal life on the earth. God said: “Say to thebelieving men that they should lower their gazeand guard their modesty: that will make forgreater purity for them; and Allah is Well-Acquainted with all that they do. And say to thebelieving women that they should lower their gazeand guard their modesty; that they should notdisplay their beauty and ornaments except what(must ordinarily) appear thereof; that they shoulddraw their veils over their body openings and notdisplay their beauty except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands’ fathers, their sons, their husbands’ sons, their brothers or theirbrothers’ sons, or their sisters’ sons, or theirwomen, or the slaves whom their right handspossess, or male servants free of physical needs, orsmall children who have no sense of shame of sex;and that they should not strike their feet in orderto draw attention to their hidden ornaments. And Page 28
  29. 29. O ye Believers turn ye all together towards Al’lahin repentance, that you may attain Blissfulconsequences”.The Holy Quran,Fortress (24) An-Nur (Light), verse (30-31). From these two Ayahs we see the decencies ofwalk, which the woman considers while she is on theroad. The veil (al-khimar) is the screening cover. Theword is taken from the root ‘khamara’ which meansto cover, and the ‘khamr’ and ‘khamra’ (wine)because wine covers ‘consciousness’ and closes‘thought’ and covers it. For this reason the ayahorders to let down the veil that covers the face untilthe seen neck from the upper opening of the garmentand the above area of the chest. All that isexaggeration for covering beauty, which called itadornment (zeenah), for beauty is the naturaladornment of women and juvenility as well. For he who has an expensive dear jewel, he willresort to hiding it away from the eyes of people andthieves in order not to be robbed from him, and yousay the same thing concerning his heart preciousjewel in order to safeguard and preserve her, thematter which reveals the woman’s value and herprestige in Islam. The Almighty has described to us the state of thebelieving woman in Paradise saying: “And withthem will be chaste females, restraining theirglances (desiring none except their husbands), Page 29
  30. 30. with wide and beautiful eyes”: she lowers her gazebecause of shyness. “as chaste as the shelteredeggs”: pure from impurities, so she is veiled and seenby none except her husband. The Holy Quran,Fortress (37) As-Saffat (Those who Set Ranks), verse (48-49). Indeed, if the women of Paradise are veiled off theothers, how should the women of this lower life bethen? All the woman’s charms which Al’lah theAlmighty adorned her with from the beauties of face, eyes, mouth, teeth, hair, juvenility, youth, and othershave been named in the Holy Qur’an as ‘adornment’and since unveiling these charms to the ones otherthan the husband, the father, the brother, the son orany one of the unmarriageable men listed in theNoble verse causes charisma and corruption in land, such as driving to adultery, and stirs up discordbetween man and his wife after he has seen the onewhose face is more beautiful than his wife’s, and whohas a better impression or position in his spirit thanher’s, therefore, and for uprooting corruption fromland, keeping the family and its happiness, andpreventing the factors of weakness and loosenessfrom sneaking, Islam orders the women not to showthese beauties to other than the unmarriageable menwhen the Almighty says: “…and not display theirbeauty except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands’ fathers, their sons, theirhusbands’ sons, their brothers, or their brothers’ Page 30
  31. 31. sons, or their sisters’ sons, or their women…”. TheAlmighty has ordered the young woman to walknormally in the road so that her youth and juvenility, which Al’lah the Almighty has adorned her with, donot appear:“…and that they should not strike their feet inorder to draw attention to their hiddenornaments, And o ye believers turn ye all togethertowards Al’lah in repentance that you may attainblissful consequences.”The Holy Quran,Fortress (24) An-Nur (Light), verse (31). At the end of this Ayah, there is a norm for goodconduct in the road for women to follow. God forbidswomen to strike with their feet while walking lest herbody shakes and the signs of her beauty and youthmay appear from behind the loose covering garmentand the dropped veil for the shakes of the body willarouse the instinctive desire of men and moves thecause of dormant libido. There is a definite clue thatthe woman’s body in all is charisma: “The woman, all in all, is pudendum”; as the Arab Prophet (CPTH)said: “We do not consent of the charisma. Thecharisma is asleep. Al’lah’s curse (alienation fromGod) be upon him who awakes it.”God also said: “O Prophet tell thy wives anddaughters, and the believing women, that theyshould cast their outer garments over theirpersons (when outdoors), lest they should not beknown and not molested. And Al’lah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” Page 31
  32. 32. The Holy Quran,Fortress (33) Al-Ahzab (The Combined Clans), verse (59).In this clear evidence, it is shown that the face of thewoman is pudendum and the Islamic law does notaccept unveiling it. If this Ayah permitted to uncoverthe face (they would be known), and we would haveviolated this explicit Ayah. This ayah includes all thebelievers’ women from the top, from the Messenger’s(CPTH) women, the purified to all believing women. If the community organizes this problem in a goodway that goes on with the Heavenly jurisprudence, itwill be real advanced community. Thus, all the woman’s charms which Al’lah theAlmighty has adorned her with, and which awakescharisma at men were gathered, indeed, by Him theAlmighty with one word when He said: “theirbeauty”, and forbids showing it when He said:“…and not display their beauty…” in compliancewith the happiness and safety of the community. And if some people may hold in interpreting thisverse views which are far from the Godly purposeand say that the woman should veil her hair and shownothing but her face calling such unveiling ‘Thelegitimate unveiling’, but in fact, this interpretation isplainly stray (errant), for the face and the eyes mayseize (charm) the looker’s mind and captivate hisheart more than the hair. So it is necessary, suchbeing the case, to veil the face besides the hair. Page 32
  33. 33. And if they pretend that the ornament is the paint andcoloring which are put on the face to give it red colorand brilliance, they shall be also in error, and theornament meant in the Ayah is not the coloring andpaint, because two women may meet: one of them isa beauty of good-looking face, and the Godly Mighthas granted her of the shining and red-colored facewith the redness of freshness and vitality what makesher in no need of paints and colorings, and the otheris an ugly one who colored her face with thecolorings and made it brilliant by using paints thematter which only added to her ugliness andgrisliness. We wonder: which one of them will affectthe looker’s heart when looking at her? Is it the prettyone whom Al’lah the Almighty adorned with beautyfrom His? Or the ugly one who adorned her face withthe paints? And is the ornament what the woman adornsherself with, or what God has adorned her with of thecharms? Undoubtedly, the meaning has become obvious andclear, and the word “…not display their beauty”means definitely and limitedly what Al’lah theAlmighty has adorned woman with of the beauties inface and body which awakens charisma and be acause of corruption when being unveiled, and anymeaning other than this will not ensure the generalgood, nor will it uproot corruption, and far be it fromAl’lah to give an order in which there is a room forobjection or a motive for corruption. Page 33
  34. 34. When Al’lah, the Almighty has not allowed womanaccording to the above-mentioned verse, to show herornament except to the believing women lest thedisbelieving one, who has no trustworthiness, maytransmit the woman’s beauties to the marriageablemen, and indicated to that in the Noble verse: “ortheir women…”, will it then, be permissible to thewoman to unveil her face to the marriageable men?!Indeed, these meanings are clear, plain, andindisputable, but the non-pondering of people onGod’s verses made them fall in what they had fallenof the misunderstanding, and when they were asked, they, in their ignorance, gave a legal opinion, so theywent astray and misled people away from God’s path, while God’s Messenger (CPTH) said: “The mostthing I fear for my people is the misleading guides”.If they unveiled their faces, the Noble Ayah wouldnot have been stated in such wording “lest theyshould not be known”, because the unveiled-facedwoman is certainly known by the others. And men in the past put turbans on their headswhen going out, and in our such time they put shawlor headband on their heads in some Islamic countriesso that only their faces are shown, does that meanthat they are but a little known? So, the word “lest they should not be known” doesnot apply to the woman unveiling her face. This is as clear as the sun, and there is no truesaying after the Creator’s, the Great and theAlmighty, therefore, we should listen to His saying Page 34
  35. 35. not to another one related to the creatures, anddispute is not permitted concerning what is openlystated in the Holy Qur’an.Besides, women were veiling their faces in all theIslamic countries without exception during the pastthirteen centuries. And who is more honorable than God’s Messenger(CPTH)? Would he (CPTH) then let the women goout unveiling off what is most charming in them, vistheir faces, and this is one of the devil’s steps, for itwill be followed by steps in undressing until theybecome “dressed but undressed, inclining toadultery”: as it is seen in this time, and making himwho looks at them incline to it (adultery). “Cursethem”: keep yourselves far from them. “As they arecursed”: far from Al’lah, for cursing meansalienation from Al’lah. God says: “Al’lah seeks tomake you repent (forgive you), but those whofollow their own appetites wish you to be farastray”.The Holy Quran,Fortress (4) Al-Nisa’(Women), verse (27). Veil is veil, it is like the impenetrable fort, if youmake a gap in it, it will fall down and collapse.Similarly; if a hole extremely seductive and morecharming than any other seduction is made in the veilwhen permitting unveiling the face, the communitywill fall down in the valleys of vice and deterioration, and so long it keeps on going in this perversity, notriumph will be hoped for it at all. Page 35
  36. 36. The Rule of the Woman’s Praying at the Mosque† The Western scholar: Dear Muslim scholar, tellme about The Rule of the Woman’s Praying at theMosque?* The Muslim scholar: God’s Messenger (CPTH)elucidated that matter a definite elucidation, and nopersonal interpretative opinions concerning texts. When Om Hamid Al-Ansariyah, the wife of AboHaimd Al-Sa’edi, said after she had honestlyembraced Islam and loved God’s Messenger (CPTH)a sacred love in God, and she liked accompanyinghim spiritually and praying with him: “O Messengerof God! I like praying with you ‘that is: she wants topray with him at the mosque’. Then he (CPTH) said:I have already known that you like to pray with me,but your praying in your bedroom is better thanyour’s in another room, and your praying in anyroom is better than your’s in your house courtyard, and your praying in your house courtyard is betterthan your’s in the mosque”. Then this truthful woman did nothing but orderedto have a place for praying built at the farthest andmost dark corner of her house in order to gatherherself wholly to God when praying, so she prayed init until she died and met God, the Great and theAlmighty. It was quoted from Om Salama - May God bepleased with her – Mother of the believers, that she Page 36
  37. 37. said: the prophet (CPTH) said: “the best mosques forwomen are the floor of their special rooms”. So, the woman’s praying in her room (her specialroom for its complete covering) is better than her’s inthe courtyard, and it was cited from the prophet(CPTH) that he said: “the woman’s praying in herbedroom is better than her’s in any other room, andher praying in her private room is better than her’sin her bedroom”. The private room: is the little room inside the bigone, in which the valuable properties are kept. It isderived from the root (cheating) which means hidingthe precious thing. Then, the more the woman’s covering is greater, themore her praying is better. God’s Messenger (CPTH) said: “The woman ispudendum, if she gets out, the devil will adorn her”.That is: He receives her and beautifies her in themen’s eyes in order to seduce her and to tempt themwith her aiming to let one of them fall in charismathen in destruction. And this great interest in hidingthe woman is but to bury the charisma caused bywoman when getting out of their houses. He (CPTH) said: “We don’t consent of thecharisma.”And: “The charisma is asleep. Al’lah’s curse be uponhim who awakes it.” This matter is confirmed by God’s saying: “OConsorts of the prophet! Ye are not like any of the Page 37
  38. 38. other women if ye achieved Al’lah’s light (beingprotected against ill-desires): be not toocomplaisant of speech, lest one, in whose heart isdisease, should be moved with desire, showdiscretion in what you say and stay in your housesand make not a dazzling display like that of theformer time of ignorance, and establish thecommunication with God and attain thepurification to yourselves and obey God and HisMessenger. Indeed Al’lah seeks to remove evildeeds from you, consorts of the prophet, and topurify you. Mention that are recited to you inyour homes of Al’lah’s revelations (verses) and thewisdom of it. Benignant is Al’lah and all-knowing.”The Holy Quran,Fortress (33) Al-Ahzab (The Combined Clans), verse (33-34). Indeed, though the speech is addressed to themothers of believers, who are the ideals, but it surelyimplies the believers’ women. And there is a legalrule that says: the generality of the word is that whichhas to be taken into consideration, not the specialty ofthe reason. Then, God the Almighty ordered the women to stayin their houses, establish the communication withHim, attain the purification to themselves, and obeyAl’lah and His Messenger, then to mention ‘beforethe other believing women’ what is recited to them intheir homes ‘not in the mosques’ of Al’lah’s versesand the wisdom of it. Page 38
  39. 39. That is God’s law, and as the true honest prophet(CPTH) said: “Seek the opinion of your heart (yourconscience) even if the Muftis have given and givenyou a legal opinion”, and we follow but Al’lah’sBook and His Messenger’s Sunnah, for men havetheir own world and women have another world inIslam religion, and we do not accept to let themosques be like museums where men mix withwomen, then the hearts turn away from God and thetrue communication with Him, and as a result, theyare corrupted. For the worldly life and the afterlifeare like the woman and the fellow-wife, they do notget together, and if we gather them, we shall do awaywith the religion from its roots, therefore, we shallnot accept mankind speech instead of Al’lah’s, theGreat, and who has a better law than Al’lah’s forpeople seeking certainty? It is He who has sent down(revealed) the Book detailing and elucidatingeverything. Page 39
  40. 40. The Woman’s Veil in Praying† The Western scholar: Would you please teach meabout The Woman’s Veil in Praying?* The Muslim scholar: It is not permitted for womanto pray with something uncovered from her body, while it is necessary to unveil her face and her handsin order to have a right trend. Therefore, she ought todistance herself in a room inside a room inside herhome as God’s Messenger (CPTH) ordered, but he(CPTH) did not say to unveil her face and her handsin the road, as those who have no knowledgeinterpreted it, ney in praying, and praying is notperformed in the markets. And any saying other than this, is that of those whofollow their desires, and wish for us destruction andto deviate greatly from the path of right.Unveiling the face is forbidden, because it removesthe veil, and God the Almighty says: “…talk tothem from behind a screen…”: and the screen: iswhat curtains the vision completely. The Holy Quran,Fortress (33) Al-Ahzab (The Combined Clans), verse (53). As for the white-colored dress of the womancovering her hair and body in praying, it is necessaryfor straightening her trend (direction) toward God,because what harms the eye harms the spirit, and thewoman in her human nature differs from man, for herbeauty, her hair and her body may charm (engage) Page 40
  41. 41. her and turn her away from true communication, therefore, this dress reminds her with the garment ofa Mecca pilgrim, which imitates in its reality theshroud when death. So she divorces the lower life, puts off charisma andturns wholly and honestly towards her Creator. Page 41
  42. 42. Unveiling the Woman’s Face in Pilgrimage† The Western scholar: My brother the Muslimscholar, what about Unveiling the Woman’s Face inPilgrimage?* The Muslim scholar: Ibn Omar quoted from theprophet (CPTH) his saying: “The woman enters astate of ritual consecration (of Mecca pilgrim) byunveiling her face, while man by shaving the hair ofhis head”. So, the woman unveils her face and her hands inpilgrimage when being in a state of ritualconsecration exactly as she does when praying, andthis Hadith shows that the woman does not show herface in days other than those of pilgrimage, for howshe will be permitted to unveil her face whilepilgrimage if she is not originally ordered to veil it?Pilgrimage, like other religious duties, was prescribedto all mankind, for example like fasting which wasprescribed to those before us: “O Believers, fastingis prescribed to you as it was prescribed to thosebefore you so that you may achieve God’s light.”The Holy Quran,Fortress (2) Al-Baqara (The Cow), verse (183). Also the veil and the other divine precepts wereimposed by the Almighty upon those preceded us,God says: “He has ordained for you the religionHe has revealed to you – Mohammad – andformerly enjoined Noah and Abraham, Moses and Page 42
  43. 43. Jesus saying: Establish the religion and be unitedin it. That to which you call them is unacceptableto the idolators. Al’lah chooses to Him whom hewill, and guides to Him whom he repents.”The Holy Quran,Fortress (41) Ash-Shura (Consultation), verse (13). But in the course of time, people neglected theseordinances little by little until they left out their rulescausing them to be changed. Then Islam came andrestituted veil and fasting to their true fundamentals.Similarly concerning pilgrimage, there is no mixingbetween men and women in it originally. For example, there was a specified time for mencircumambulation (of the Ka’ba), and another timefor women’s. And here is the saying of Lady A’isha (May God bepleased with her) shows that matter with the definiteclue, for she said: “The passengers were passing byus while we were in a state of ritual consecrationwith God’s Messenger (CPTH), when theyapproached us, the one of us dropped her loosegarment from her head on her face, and when theyleft us behind, we unveiled our faces”. But also, throughout the ages, people once againneglected this matter, they did not realize the greatwisdom folded beyond the veil and the rites ofpilgrimage, and the separation between man andwoman in pilgrimage, and as a result, this mixing yousee between the two sexes in pilgrimage took place. Page 43
  44. 44. And every one goes to perform the hajj, God willgrant him his recompense according to his intentionand what he is worthy of.So, in the time of God’s Messenger (CPTH), the veilwas covering the body, the head, and the face withone-eye opening in it through which the noblecompanion could see her way when she wascompelled to get out of her home. We have heard that the veil in Morocco is similar tothat in the time of God’s Messenger (CPTH), and thisis the utmost aim.In fact, any veil that hides the beauties from themarriageable (foreign) men and prevents theoccurrence of adultery is a legal veil by which theveiling woman gets God’s satisfaction and obtainsthe much recompense. Also, in our Syrian villages, there are women whowrap themselves in sheets showing nothing of theircharms, and this is a satisfactory legal veil too.Anyhow, the means multiplied and the veil whichprevents stirring up the forbidden charismas is thatwhich the text (verses) of the Holy Qur’an orderedwith. Page 44
  45. 45. The Story of the Veil and the French Woman† The Western scholar: O, my Muslim scholarbrother; I see that our present communities wentdeeply into endless arid lands and deserts, far andstrange, from the shores of virtue whereas it wasorphanized and the market of vice was promoted infarness and deepness from virtue thrown in the lap ofdesire and its caprices. Pleasure realized but followedwith troublesome psychological pains. The world issurging on a civilization decorated with every luxuryand opulence and caprices containing within itselfseas of pains and spiritual sorrows and the cordialand psychological hardship. Verily, the realhappiness is lost as well as the reality of peopledespite the lavishness is in misery. I am very much inearnest to ask where is the escape? When will realhappiness return to the hearts of people? But I wouldlike you to give me more about the unveiling toquench my thirst. Do you have a tangible example ora real incident about the unveiling and the veil?* The Muslim scholar: Here is to you, my dearbrother researcher, the story of ‘the veil and theFrench woman’, but before telling you I would like tocomment a little on the Ayah which I mentioned alittle while before. It is “O Prophet tell thy wivesand daughters, and the believing women, that theyshould cast their outer garments over theirpersons (when outdoors), lest they should not beknown and not molested. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful” Page 45
  46. 46. The Holy Qur’an,Fortress (44) Al-Ahzab (The Combined Clans), verse(59.) For it is a heavenly jural law which our master theprophet Mohammad (CPTH), brought it as well asthose messengers and prophets who came beforehim… Because this God is Merciful andCompassionate; He does not accept but the happinessfor his obedient men in this Life and the hereafter. But the bestial hellish desires made people deviatefrom these laws thinking the laws of their desires willlead them to their happiness; they did not think right. But anyone, who perceives the secret of theseheavenly laws and the great wisdom where thehappiness of mankind lies by applying it, then he willlove God. Whenever a man becomes nearer to God,the more his love increases and the more heunderstands the Godly objective of his rules. Andhere is to you the incident that happened during theFrench mandate over Syria: The Story of ‘the Veil and the French Woman’ A meeting was set between the Eminent ScholarMohammad Amin Sheikho and a certain person ofsocial and cultural high class. The man had‘doctorate’ at the time of tutorships and no school. The meeting had something to do with theinauguration of Prince Abdulmajeed Haidar a kingover the Great Syria at the time of the French Page 46
  47. 47. mandate and he was given the green light from theFrench government. On the next day and at the same fixed date theEminent Scholar Mohammad Amin Sheikho came tothe door of that man and knocked at it. When he feltthat a woman was at the door, he gave her his back. She was obliged to tell him that her husband wouldbe late a little for ten minutes because an importantmatter with General Seray the supreme Frenchcommander in Syria. So he descended the steps andwaited in the street near the house. The doctor apologized for being late. Our mananswered: to be late for ten minutes was notconsidered lateness. Then they entered the house and sat in the saloon. Before the talk for which the meeting was held, thewife of the doctor and her daughter came to attendthe meeting. He looked at her husband who knew thatMohammad Amin Sheikho was not in the habit ofsitting with gentle sex. The husband looked, thendropped his head and did not mutter a word becausehe saw his wife’s face was covered with anger. She began her talk saying: I had a highly goodreputation, an international reputation about you inLebanon. I valued you very much .Now I see viceversa. He was obliged to reply through her daughtersaying: please tell your mother that she is a fool. Page 47
  48. 48. When she knew the striking news. She becameexcited and stood up crying: am I a fool! ‘It is knownthat the French always had hot tempers.’He told her: of course… He who gives two completecontradictory judgments upon a man whom he doesnot know or meet with; isn’t he really a fool! Did yousee me before, to give these two judgments?!She answered: yes; but why did not you enter thevilla when I invited you? Am I not beautiful? Myhusband knows that I am one of the charming womenin Paris, Did you hear that I am not an honest womanso that you did not enter? Here is my husband, askhim if he noticed anything about me of such kindduring my life with him?Our Man answered: I am a Muslim. One of the basicthings in our clear jurisprudence is that men keep totheir own world and women keep to theirs too. Thejoining of the two sexes is taboo. She answered: you, Muslims have exaggerated much. The Jews are older than you. The Christians aremore powerful than you are too. Where did you getthis veiling from?He answered her: is it a matter of oldness and poweror of logic, proof and rightness? She said: truly by evidence and proof. He said: therefore, let me show the cause of the veilbetween the man and the woman in Islam. When I donot sit with gentle sex but I only meet the harsh sex(the male sex) all the day, then I come back homefrom work; I only see my wife as the most beautifulwoman in the world. My love to her increases…. Thebonds between us become more powerful. This is Page 48
  49. 49. very important for the growth of my children, evenupon the family level. When we sit together; you andI are surely honest… You certainly have charms andexcellent characteristics that distinguish you from mywife. These charms you have; I shall like thembecause I am a human being. When I return home, the comparison begins unconsciously between what Isaw and I liked of complete characteristics in which Ido not find in my wife, then I shall lament ill-luck,and relate injustice to my lot. Why did my wifebecome my lot! She is not of that beauty, charm, andthe musical talk or elegance and the lightness of soulor attraction of yours. These qualities will lessen mylove to my wife. Hatred will prevail between usinstead of love and intimacy. When my wife is niceto me as usual saying ‘O my darling’ I feel as if Iheard a bullet penetrating my ears, because the heartis changed. “God has not made two hearts in aman…”. Love has changed and the spirit tendstowards the most beautiful and the most charming, the more attractive and the finer. Then the disputeprevails instead of cooperation, and injustice insteadof justice. My wife may bear my bad treatment onceor twice, but her patience will come to an end. Shewill question herself about the secret of thiswonderful inversion, which made him treat me likethat in spite of doing my duty towards him and mychildren in the best way. She revolts and treats me thesame, and here is the calamity. There is tension in ourrelation. The quarrels begin for the silliest cause andthe tempers are changed. Because of this change, lifehas become an unbearable hell. Divorce becomes the Page 49
  50. 50. only solution for salvation. We shall not both reap theresult of divorce only, but it will be reflected uponthe children who will lose in a moment their guardianand they will become the friends of misbehavior inthe street ‘the only place where they learn the arts ofvice and crime’. A quarrel will happen between myfamily and hers too. This dissolution has a very badeffect on building up the community. Due to mixingand unveiling, the community becomes disconnectedand it is very easy to be demolished. This is the resultof our mixing together; despite you and I are honest. This is in relation to the man. But in relation to thewoman and through her meeting with a strange man,she will like some characteristics in him such as: talk, treatment, the outward appearance, the rank, etc…These qualities are not available in her husband. With the elapse of time, this will lead to discord withher husband and the beginning of disputes andquarrels. Then the Eminent Scholar looked at her and said:if you find good qualities in me… Don’t you likethese qualities to be available in your husband? She said: I’d like my husband to be the best man inthe world. He said: therefore, the loss of these qualities in yourhusband will be little him in your eyes, and his valuedecreases in your view. The only cause of that is yourmixing with men other than your husband. Thismixing made you like some qualities in others, which Page 50
  51. 51. are not found in your husband, and the result isdisgust and repulsion instead of love and enjoyment, thus happiness is lost. When she heard this logical discussion as ascientific analysis to our practical situation. Shelooked at her daughter and said: I want you tobecome a Muslim like this man but not like yourfather. Her husband dropped his head shamefully becauseshe knew his behavior from practices contradictorywith the spirit of a Muslim. After that The great Eminent Scholar took leaveand went home. After a few days, the husband of the French womancame to tell the honest master that his wife wanted tomeet him again for she found in him a true, real andlogical talk… She might have the real wish toembrace Islam if she could meet you again. The Eminent Scholar apologized to her husbandsaying: my meeting with her for the first time wasobligatory, as I was obliged to reply to her accusationof Islam from fanaticism to the veil and inaction. Now I do not want to go to her on my legs and by myown free will. In the first time, I saw her withoutdesire, but in the second time and to meet her by myown will I shall desire her, I am a human being, mybrother, thus I ruin myself and this is not permissible. If she wants to embrace Islam that is her free will. Page 51
  52. 52. In less than a month, the doctor came back with hisFrench wife who was dressed in long clothescovering her body, and putting a cover on her hair. The Eminent Scholar Mohammad Amin Sheikhoopened the door for them without a date beforehand. He welcomed them and permitted them to enter hishouse honorably. Then she told him that she saw theProphet Mohammad (CPTH) in her sleep in his light, grandeur and beauty, so she was astounded fromexistence and lived in sacred worlds and heavenlydelight and her spirit had forsaken her world to alovely paradise, she hated her desires and wantednothing more than her high sublime state. She added:‘since the great sight I began to live a life full ofhappiness and enjoyment where my pain is changedinto matchless felicity I am still living it; for thisreason I decided to declare my Islam at your hands’,and she embraced Islam.Yes, this real story occurred during the Frenchmandate over Syria. Then he added: after embracing Islam you have tocover your face in order to continue your elevatedcordial life, for we do not accept harmful charm. She answered: I cannot apply it now in one lot, because all my life I used to uncover my face. Thus itwas difficult to apply it then. She asked him to be patient with her a little and shewould accomplish that in accordance with God’sWilling, and in love for his Messenger (CPTH).The political troubles that stormed Damascus did notlet them meet again, but he was reassured to her Page 52
  53. 53. truthfulness. He was sure that she would accomplisheverything God’s willing.  Page 53
  54. 54. Chapter Two The Case of Polygamy in Islam Page 54
  55. 55. The Case of Polygamy in IslamA Dialogue between a Western Orientalist and aMuslim Savant about the Verity of Polygamy in Islam† The Western scholar: The spiritual loftiness andsincerity of the marital life in the West has beenmanifested in its sublime meanings where justice isrealized between the husband and his wife; where heremains faithful to her all lifelong. He will not bringher a fellow wife, he will not maltreat her, and he willnever aggrieve her, whereas in Islam; the rights of thewife are shed with impunity when the husbandmarries four wives. What do you say?* The Muslim scholar: What you say is the essenceof reality if the marriage has been a lustypsychological marriage but not a humane one.† The Western scholar: Please, I do not understandwhat you mean by ‘a humane marriage’ so long as‘humanity’ is the ambition of all civilized countries.* The Muslim scholar: Humane marriage is aimingat saving the family and at rearing the children in avirtuous education alongside protecting the widowsand rendering them happiness for a lifetime andmostly in the aftermath of internecine wars, forexample ‘The First and Second World Wars’. Themartyrs, who have sacrificed their noble lives toprotect their homeland and to defend their kinsmen, Page 55
  56. 56. the riches and the honor as well, do they deserve tokeep their widows bereft for lifetime? Who will rearthe children and offspring of the martyrs? Who willtake care of them? Who can supply them with food, clothing and lodging?† The Western scholar: In Europe, we securepensions for the martyrs’ families so as to guaranteeand suffice their needs.* The Muslim scholar: Therefore, did you securehusbands to the widows in order to make them happyand to rear their children in a sublime and unimpairednurture? Can money alone do away with the husbandand the good nurture?† The Western scholar: We can’t realize such aproblem; for every husband cannot marry a widow, because it is not permissible for him to marry morethan one wife. Verily, in our negligence to thewidows of the martyrs and to the nursing of theirchildren on healthy education, we have ignored agreat part of our humanity, and we have lost one ofthe great rights of the martyrs toward their families.By God, do you have any succor or rescue to thewronged families of the martyrs? Do you have anylaw or any device that sympathizes with the orphansand their wretched mothers?* The Muslim scholar: We are exactly like you. Butthe law of God, the Creator and Organizer, hassupplied us to perfection toward these aggrieved Page 56
  57. 57. families; and on referring to the Holy Book, theQur’an, we find the remedy and recovery in it, in HisAlmighty Saying: “And if ye fear that you will notdeal fairly by the orphans, marry of the women, tolead a good life to you (all), two, three, or four. And if you fear that ye cannot do justice (to somany) then only one or the captives (who are to beset to right)”.The Holy Quran,Fortress (4) An-Nisa (Women), verse (3).† The Western scholar: I beg your pardon! Thisimportant command is not clear to me, and I do notunderstand how does the Angel of Mercy descend onthese poor families? Now you have said in yourtongue and lips, “…marry of the women, to leadgood life to you (all), two, three or four…”So long the problem is not gustatory lust for the manthen; he can do what he likes and delights. Whereasthe woman has become, in this verse, a commodity, adelectation, a device of whims and cravings for theman in order to realize his golden lustful dreamsthrough her. He will suck the nectar of heryouthfulness; then moves to another flower. He willsurely ignore the first one for his occupancy in thesecond one. Then it does not take long before he fliesto the third one whose youthfulness and beauty havecaptivated him, allured him, and seduced him; and heabandons the two women to cling to the third womanand so forth. Where is the humanity in your Qur’anand your constitution? The woman has become notmore than a toy between the hands of the Muslim Page 57
  58. 58. husband. He reaps what he likes from her, andwhenever he likes, and then he throws her intonegligence and oblivion at any time. Please, explainto me what you have just said, because it is a humaneaspect and a lustful aspect.* The Muslim scholar: Pardon! O, my humaneresearcher brother. You have just hastened a little inunderstanding the verse. You have done as our lordsand our respected old men of divinity did before. Youhave plucked from the verse; “…marry of thewomen, to lead good life to you…” and ignored thehumane aspect which I have mentioned to you. Youdid not notice what I have said to you; as no one ofthe Muslim sheikhs noticed before. You haveplucked the flower “…marry of the women, to leadgood life to you…” and you have forgotten thebeginning of the verse, which is the base, and pillarof its understanding and interpretation; the storycannot be understood quite clearly since you grasp itsending; and you do not hear its beginning. Thisunderstanding is mutilated, and the judgment givenabout the story is surely a wrong judgment, and it isvery far from its reality. You have mentioned theverse from its last half, i.e., you have said, “…marryof the women, to lead good life to you…”; you havehastened and you have forgotten its beginning, i.e.you have escaped mentioning “…and if ye fear thatye will not deal fairly by the orphans…”; and thisis the condition for polygamy. I shall never blameyou for your skipping the first half of the versebecause all our Muslim scientists of divinity have Page 58
  59. 59. understood it as you have understood it cut off, butnot as God has wished it to be. For God enacted theclause of treating the orphans with equity; beforepermitting multiplicity of wives. It is not permitteddefinitely and forever to marry more than one wife inIslam; except for a sublime humane cause, i.e., tosave the orphans; and eventually to save and helptheir mothers. The verse must be taken as a whole, and it does not accept division at all. Moreover Godhas restricted and imposed it in a conditional clause,i.e. this is the condition of permitting marriage ofmore than one wife. Otherwise, one wife will sufficeand meet the need. Thus, there will be neither injustice nor grievance. Before I elucidate the great divine wisdom to you, Iwant you to listen to me for the following realexample: Suppose we have a certain town with onethousand men as inhabitants. Most of them aremarried, but half of them martyred defending thehomeland, the religion, the honor, the kinsmen, thewealth and the offspring. Half of them remained andthey numbered to /500/. Then who will come to helpthe remaining five hundred widows and orphans? They remained facing the difficulties and calamitiesof life without husbands to aid them and to protectthem from the catastrophes and adversities ofincidents. What about those orphans who inheritedfunds from their fathers? Who will increase andinvest their money for their welfare? Who willfinance them from its profits? Who will guard it forthem? Who will insure that their money will not be Page 59
  60. 60. wasted and dissipated? Also, is it right to leave thechildren of martyrs without a virtuous father who willrectify their crookedness and will impede theirdeviation and their forfeiture? The recompense ofbenevolence is nothing but benevolence! This martyrwho sacrificed his life, is his reward to let his wife awidow for life? Don’t you know the proverb: ‘Tosacrifice oneself is the most sublime purpose ofsacrifice’? Is it fair to leave his widow exposed toimmoral degeneration and to social corruption?Although Islam commands spending money onwidows and orphans from the Muslim Treasury, where the Islamic regime secured social support andsolidarity in complete perfection. Isn’t the widow inneed of a man to sympathize with her, to delight herloneliness, and to satisfy her natural instincts in alegitimate way, so as to praise the outcome? Is it fairto leave their children without a strong resolutecontrol in order to straighten their crooked manners, and to prevent their deviation when they becometeenagers with youthful rashness? The fair sex ofwomen is naturally tender-hearted, incapable ofcontrolling their children when they become of age,the dangerous stage of maturity. However the children will deviate and their fate isdestined in jails and wretchedness, as a result of theircrookedness. Do we leave them thus to their fate fortheir fathers sacrificed their lives for our sake?† The Western scholar: O, Muslim brother! Youhave made me eager more than ever. You have Page 60
  61. 61. lighted the fires of suspense in myself, for the love ofknowing the remedy for this ailment, and recoveryfrom these social diseases, which threaten the life ofnations and peoples. By God! Enlighten me more. How is the way to help and rescue those dearvictims? You have awaked humanism in me; and youhave made my heart weep and cleft my liver uponthis tormented humanity, the overfull with misery. In fact, all civilized countries in the world couldnever find solutions and remedies for those ill-fatedhuman beings. Verily, the results of destructive warsare always widows and orphans drown in distress, despair, pain, oppression and deprivation. What isyour answer?* The Muslim scholar: The married man who is fitfinancially, physically and mentally can marry one,two or three widows to the utmost of humancapabilities. He should shelter their children, safeguard their dignity, and supply them with goodliving. This qualified man can get married to morethan one wife on condition that he should be wise, learned and possessing a great deal of perfection andwisdom to be impartial among the wives, and bringup the children on perfect humane nurture. Theinterpretation of the clause: “…marry of whatdelights you…” means that the marital life will notbe delightful unless three basic conditions areprovided in marriage: The First Condition: the provision of the financial solvency and the sufficient wealth Page 61
  62. 62. are to be secured for decent living for the totalmembers of the two, the three or the fourfamilies in the utmost. As it is not permissiblefor a married husband to marry again; leavingthe families exposed to hunger. The firstcondition will never be sufficient unless thesecond condition is provided. The Second Condition: stipulates that themarried husband should have physical abilityand capacity with which he can quench thewomanhood of his three or four wives. Heshould not decrease the natural right of eitherone, upon the account of the other inquenching her sexual feminine instinct; andhe should not oppress the right of one wife onthe account of the other. The second conditionshould be inevitably followed by the mostimportant third condition. The Third Condition: In this condition thehusband must be wise and rational. He mustrealize justice and content in the hearts of allhis wives. He should do justice among themwithout discriminating one over the other inclothing, in food, in lodging, in talk or in thegood word, and in the kind humane treatmentfor them all in equity without partiality, discrimination or preference. Thus the maritallife becomes very delightful where sympathy, synergy and cooperation are available in thefamily where the ideal, happy and upper Page 62
  63. 63. community arises. The ideal humanity necessitates the presence of a virtuous and whole-hearted husband to take the place of their martyred father. May God have mercy upon him. The prophet Mohammad (CPTH) said in his holy saying: “Such as the faithful believers in their friendly relation and in their mercy toward one another; are like the one body when one organ complains, the other organs gather together for vigilance and protection.”† The Western scholar: How odd for humanity! How could the civilized human being of this high era,who has reached the apex in cultures, sciences, literatures, arts, innovation and invention until herises high over the mountain tops, and he penetratesthe clouds and traverses the corners of heavens, slipsfrom his memory these noble deeds? And in theaftermath of wars, he left thousands and thousands ofwidows and orphans yelling from deprivation andsuffering. In fact, the absolute perfection is for God.Whatever the human being culminates the climax, heis still open to oblivion that leads to forgetting wholecommunities and to leaving them open to sorrowsand pains, and supplicating to God from derelictionof the human being to his brother. Therefore, whenthe three qualities are not fulfilled in the man, thefinancial solvency, the physical capacity and themental wisdom, has he no right to practice polygamyin your religion? Page 63
  64. 64. * The Muslim scholar: I repeat that one mustpossess the competence of the three conditions; thefinancial solvency, the physical potency and themental wisdom. Thereby, one could realize justice, passion and the good nurture for a happy life, flourishing and overfull with passion and sympathy. Then, one has the right to marry more than one wife;otherwise, it is not permissible. Savoring marriage inmore than one wife is not permissible, not even thevoluptuous psychic marriage. But the humane justmarriage straightens the situations of the orphans andwidows for a sublime and better life, for the welfareof the community according to God’s Saying in HisHoly Book, the Qur’an: “…if ye fear that ye cannotdo justice (to so many) then only one…”: if youfind yourself unable to do right with women, marryone wife and not more than one.The Holy Quran,Fortress (4) An-Nisa (Women), verse (3).† The Western scholar: How wonderful! I do notknow that Islam contains this humane sublimity andperfection, which every virtuous spirit adores. Thissocial consolidation and solidarity, which reaches theapex, humanity has fallen short of acquiring it in itsdevelopment while reaching the top of itscivilization. Verily, this is the word of the AlmightyGod, the Merciful One upon His creatures, the KeenOne upon their happiness and bliss. In your HolyBook, the Qur’an, it is mentioned that the spirit canbe biased and prejudiced; for Man adores beauty byhis nature and his instinct. His spirit inclines to one of Page 64
  65. 65. the wives more than the three wives. What will Mando with his heart since he cannot control it ininclining toward the most delicate, the tenderest andthe most charming? This is what your Holy Book, theQur’an, decides when it says, “Ye will never be ableto deal equally among women (wives), howevermuch ye endeavor (to do so)...”The Holy Quran, Fortress (4) An-Nisa (Women), verse (129).What do you say?* The Muslim scholar: O, my brother! What youhave just mentioned is the law of the original humaninstinct. The spirit adores the best and the mostbeautiful. The Almighty God has shown that in theverse you have just mentioned: “Ye will never beable to deal equally among women (wives),however much ye endeavor (to do so)...”: this isdefiniteness of incapability. For this reason, it hasanother meaning. If there is one wife more beautifulthan the rest, the spirit will incline to her. This issuecannot be refuted. But you have to treat the wives inequity. You will not be blamed for your cordialinclination, but all the blame will be for the apparenttreatment, because people only consider the apparentfeatures, and Al’lah is Omniscient in innermostfeelings. God adds to the verse saying: “…don’tincline all the inclination...”: more with one wifethan the other. “…You leave her pendent…”: becautious of deserting her, for leaving her pending, i.e.she is not married and she is not divorced. Therefore, all must be treated on the same footing of equality, Page 65
  66. 66. one night by one night, and also is the money. As forlove, you are not to be blamed for it. The mostimportant thing here is that you should not declare itin treatment.† The Western scholar: No doubt polygamy for thepurpose of safeguarding the sons and daughters of thevenerated martyrs, and to save and venerate theirwives is the highest and the most sublime cause. Theman of our modern era could not achieve such acause despite of his advancement. Such a cause is thelast refuge and the only savior for the families of themartyrs. How Merciful this Great Creator is in all hishuman beings!  Page 66
  67. 67. Chapter Three The Divorce in Islam Page 67
  68. 68. The Divorce in IslamA Dialogue between a Western Orientalist and aMuslim Savant about the Verity of Divorce in Islam* The Muslim scholar: Your yearning and truthfulspirit insists on finding out some facts, which slippedfrom all mankind’s memory. I am very much pleasedfor your question about a dilemma that the celebritiesand scholars of religion failed to resolve, i.e. thesubject of divorce.† The Western scholar: Is the divorce a benefit or adétente? Is sincerity a blessing or a legitimate denialof companionship and the sublime love? Isn’tmarriage a contract between two partners inaccordance with God’s Will? Why do you, Muslims, divorce a faithful wife that sacrificed her family foryour sake. You throw her into the lap of misery anddistress after you picked up the blossom of heryouthfulness? Is this your ideal humanity? No doubt “Divorce is the most hateful licit act toGod.” But I wonder! Why do you have this partingfrom the sacred marital relation as legitimate in yourreligion?* The Muslim scholar: No doubt if we face twoproblems the sweetest thing of which is sheerbitterness, then you; choose one where there is noluck for a chooser. But if we fall between the clawsof evil, we surely choose the easiest and the simplest Page 68
  69. 69. one. Suppose a husband has chosen a certain wife forher beauty, for her affability, or for her delicacy. After the lapse of a period upon their Marriage Lines,it was found that there was a disparity in tempers, adiscrepancy in temperaments, and disharmony inmanners. Then contrarieties of spirits and theirdisharmonies, and their differences anddissimilarities were uncovered. Then the quarrel tookthe place of the concord; and the discord took theplace of friendliness; and the antipathy took the placeof love, then the couple became like two strangers;but not two lovers. Then the sexual drive of thecouple was ended after it was flaming, and as a resultit cooled off; and it was replaced by animosity anddiscord. Then the dissension was escalated andintensified until the family became broken in the fullmeaning of the word. The spirits became tightened;and it was impossible for the couple to live under oneroof. In such a case, isn’t it better for the two partiesto cancel their marital bond which was solemnizedfor happiness? For this bond became so a contract formisfortune, discord, and deprivation from bliss thatevery one of them would search for a new partnerthat might be suitable for him/her who could verilymake him/her happy! If we forced them to remaintogether, in this deplorable situation, under duresswhat would happen? The husband would take thewrong path following ways for satisfying his sexualappetites in committing adultery. When the miserablehusband took the wrong path his wife would likewisetake the wrong turning. They would hurl slanders atone another. They would exchange perfidies between Page 69
  70. 70. them. But God does not oblige people to worshipHim by force. Therefore, there would be no outlet butparting and release by divorce. The enforcement ofletting a couple, who became mutually hateful to oneanother, live under one roof would not satisfy humanconscience. All civilized countries would refuse whatcomes forcibly. The divorce became inevitablyhateful. What coerced you to bitterness save thebitterest thing?† The Western scholar: Verily, this is an astonishinglogical talk. There is no way except the divorce afterthis account for such situations. I accept reality andcertainty, but I detest hypocrisy. This is consciousawareness, and what is exception is mere torture. Iknow that evil will prevail among children who will,in turn, imbibe hatred and dispute from the father andthe mother. The dispute of the parents will put thefamily in misery, and the boat of marriage will fall inthe family-hell, and the children will be renderedmiserable. In such a case, I am with divorce. It ismore rightful to admit divorce than to remain inerror; while we omitted the word ‘divorce’ from ourdictionary forever. Divorce is a necessity in suchcases. Verily! I rightly say that Islam has nobility ofcharacter and high-class humanity, which I have notknown before. There is a simple explanation, but it isabominable and horrible in its utterance, and yet itdistorts the essence of Islamic religion, and itdescends with it to the lowest level of humane values. Page 70
  71. 71. However, it distorts Islam and blows up its nobledeeds in such a way that one cannot find any sublimevalues in it.* The Muslim scholar: By God! What do you say,my brother? Give what you have! You have justdreaded the depth of my heart, and you haveinfiltrated anxiety and insomnia. Sail us across thissea of elucidation (inquiry) which, as you say, collapses our humanity and shakes its rock-bottom?† The Western scholar: Are you in fact, as they say, enemies of humanity? Did your value of Eve falldown to lower than the zero? Excuse me, my dearbrother. I wouldn’t dare utter such a harsh tone if Ihadn’t heard a well-spoken opinion and an exaltedwisdom from you about the case of polygamy and itssublime humane objects.* The Muslim scholar: Don’t worry! My brother! Inmy estimation there is a big issue and a great dangerthat hurt your heart and feelings in this elucidation. Ido not blame you for your tone, but I expect fromyour lips the content and the purport of this questionwhich has irritated you and deprived sleep from youreyes.† The Western scholar: Oh, my brother! It is theproblem of divorce to you. I do not say divorce, but Imean the utterance of the word ‘divorce’. This wordis light on the tongue but fearful on the scale. Do you, verily, destroy the life of your life-partner, the mother Page 71
  72. 72. of your children and offspring, sons and daughters,by uttering the word ‘divorce’ repeated thrice, fromthe mouth of any one of you? The family is destroyedcompletely and eventually. The children will suffermisery forever, and not to mention the misfortuneand ill-being of the wife in whose part the utteranceof divorce was pronounced. What will happen to herin the hell of such an unbearable life? Is the womanan article for sale? Or is she much more lower thanany article in the world? If the woman were a mareand its owner wants to release his title deed toanother proprietor, the law obliges him to conclude asale contract and sign it in the presence of two eye-witnesses. Otherwise, he will be considered a thief inthe very act. This is the case of an animal. In thelanguage of the law, it is not enough to say, ‘I giveyou this mare’, or ‘I release this mare forever to you’.What about a created being venerated by God, and ofyour kind, but she is a female, and unto God there isno difference between a male and a female save bytheir deed. Then; who lowered the woman to you,Muslims to the rock-bottom, and heightened the manabusively and despotically until the value of the wifehas become nothing that such a word damages herlife and deprives her of her liver’s portions and theblood of her soul? By God! Show me, my brother, the wisdom in a hateful utterance such as ‘I divorceyou thrice’ if there is any wisdom whatsoever!* The Muslim scholar: Oh, my brother, the freewestern scholar, I’ll never blame you for a matter Page 72
  73. 73. which no wise man, having a little bit of wisdom, will accept.† The Western scholar: Therefore, you have agreedwith me that the verbal divorce is a strong stab in theliver of Islam. It even distorts all its merits because itis a poisonous stab in the conscience of humanity.* The Muslim scholar: Take it easy! O, my freebrother scholar, the owner of the mercifulconscience! Please, let tolerance be your pioneerbecause I haven’t yet answered you about thewisdom of divorce, for half of the talk is not ananswer for it.† The Western scholar: Alas! I am eager for ananswer that convinces me and removes itscondemnation upon Islam from my heart. I beseechyou by God to quench my thirst and water my fill inan answer that can erase the satanic incitementsagainst Islam from my heart.* The Muslim scholar: Before I answer you, are yousure that the utterance of divorce is verily anything inIslam; and that it is mentioned in our Holy Book, theword of God, so that you attributed it to our straightdivinity in spite of its injustice?† The Western scholar: Verily, I do not know itsorigin from the Holy Qur’an. If it is not found in theHoly Book, i.e. the Qur’an, I am very sorry, and evenI apologize from the depth of my heart for this Page 73

But we are the kinsfolk of WesternEuropeans, have been informed, that the scholars ofyour religion and most of your denominationsacknowledge it.* The Muslim scholar: Therefore, do you accept theword of God? Or, are you satisfied with the falsifiedword of the creature just in opposition to what ismentioned in the Qur’an?† The Western scholar: We forever refuse theaccusation of Islam except through what is mentionedin your Holy Book, the Qur’an.* The Muslim scholar: Therefore, Oh my dearbrother in humanity, lend me your ear in order toadvise you of God’s decisive judgment in divorce.† The Western scholar: O! Free Muslim Brother!By God! Succor me from your Qur’an with what thatcan scatter darkness around your religion. I am quitesatisfied with what is mentioned in the provisions ofyour Holy Book; and I am all ears.* The Muslim scholar: Therefore, the Qur’an is ourarbiter. There is no argument in what is stated in thefrank Qur’an. As marriage is not a mere word said bythe Qur’an, but it has known stages. Likewise, divorce has its stages and laws that must be followedwhen real disputes arise between the two parties ‘thehusband and the wife’; and the situations of theirliving together worsened greatly. For example, if the Page 74

Deserting. 3. Slapping. 4. Assignment of an arbiter from his kinsfolk and an arbiter from hers. In case of failure of all these four steps, then onlyone utterance of divorce is completed. It is possibleto withdraw it and the return to the matrimonialhouse in case of agreement. These stages are ‘long-range’ in order the woman to return to her rationalityand to abide with the command of God so as to let inthe compass of happiness in the present life and inthe afterlife. Otherwise, the hateful separationbecomes a necessity. God said: “As for those from whom you fearrebellion, admonish them, and banish them tobeds apart, and chasten them. Then if they obeyyou, seek not a way against them...”: that is to saythat their departure from the rightful way which onlyrequires the application of the laws of divorce in sucha case. “…admonish them…”: That is to say, torAmind her of death and doomsday. You must learnyourself and teach her at the same time. If she doesnot respond to you, i.e. to rightness, then you canfollow the second step, which is ‘Desertion’. Godsaid: “…desert them in bed…”: that is to say: Page 75
