In 1958, they mounted a full scale attack on Batista and his government
A year later in 1959, Batista fled the country and Castro becam prime minister.
U.S. Response to Castro’s Power
While in power, Castro nationalized factories and plantations. This ended U.S. economic dominance on the island.
On January 3, 1961 Washington severed its diplomatic ties with Cuba.
On April 16, 1961 Cuba was officially declared a Socialist state.
The next day a group of Cuban exiles trained by the CIA attacked the Bay of Pigs. This attempt to overthrow Castro failed.
In February of 1962, the U.S. imposed a full economic embargo.
Cuba continued reliance of the Soviet Union brought a score of nuclear war in October 1962.
The Soviet Union had stored their nuclear weapons in Cuba and JFK placed a quarantine on Cuba until the Soviet Union finally withdrew their weapons.
The CIA also made numerous attempts to kill Castro, a total of 638 attempts on his life. Castro was overjoyed at the fact that people wanted him dead but never succeeded.
Castro’s Presidency
In December 1976, Castro became the president of Cuba.
Castro was responsible for opening 10,00 new schools and a new health care facility but many normal liberties existed no more such as: labor unions right to strike, independent newspapers shut down, and religious places were harassed.
In 1991 when the Soviet union fell, the economy of Cuba was ruined. He was forced to open his country up to foreigners and allow private enterprise.
The tensions with America continued and in 1996, Cuban MIG Fighters shot down two small American planes which killed four crew members.
Not long after this attack, in the late 1990’s, questions were raised about Castro’s health and in July of 2006 he read a letter on Cuban television announcing his brother would temporarily be the leader of Cuba.
