    2. Early Life
      • Born in Vietnam in 1890
      • Father, Nguyen Sinh Huy, was a teacher
      • Ho Chi Minh name at birth was Nguyen Tat Thanh
      • Father sent him to a French school
      • After, studying in France, he became a school teacher
    3. Cont.
      • Then Ho decided to a sailor and travel around the world exploring other cultures
      • In 1917, settled in Paris and became fascinated with Karl Marx and communism
      • December, 1920 he helped in organizing French Communist Party
    4. French Communist Party
      • Inspired by Russian Revolution
      • In 1924, Ho visited Moscow and wrote to a friend that it was all communist duty to return to his home country.
    5. China
      • Ho decided to go live in China on the border of Vietnam.
      • He organized a revolutionary movement among those exiled from Vietnam.
      • He was forced to leave China.
      • In 1930, returned to China and founded Indochinese Communist Party (ICP).
      • In 1931, Ho was arrested by British and set to prison.
    6. Cont.
      • Returned to China in 1938 and served as an advisor.
      • Ho regained contact with ICP leaders.
      • He organized a movement, which called itself Vietminh.
      • Ho then organized the Vietminh to fight Japanese.
    7. Japanese
      • In 1941, the Vietminh saw a chance to take down Japanese.
      • General Vo Nguyen Giap was the military leader.
      • August 1945 Japanese surrendered.
    8. Democratic Republic of Vietnam (DRV)
      • Vietminh proclaimed the country as DR
      • Ho Chi Minh was elected president
      • In late 1946 war broke out with France.
      • Fought for eight years and negotiated at Geneva
    9. After War
      • Ho still leader of DRV was now focused o building his communist government.
      • In 1960’s conflict with the south resumed.
      • Vietminh Guerrillas faught against US forces.
    10. Later Years
      • In later years Ho Chi Minh was a ceremonial figure.
      • On September 3, 1969 he died of heart failure
      • In honor of Ho in 1975 Saigon was renamed Ho Chi Minh City
