  • 2. Film Production
    • It’s development over time
    • Throughout the years of film making, the ways in which it has been done has changed. From Silent Movies, to ‘Talkies’ and Animation, to CGI (Computer Generated Images).
    • Silent Movies
    • A silent film is one with no synchronised recorded sound, especially spoken dialogue. In the 1920s, the film industry did not have the technology to combine sound with images, and so over time we have managed to develop from films such as Mel Brooks’ Silent Movie to the likes of Disney Pixar's Shrek and Finding Nemo.
    • ‘ Talkies’
    • The first commercial screening of movies with fully synchronized sound took place in New York City in April 1923. In the early years after the introduction of sound, films incorporating synchronized dialogue were known as "talking pictures," or "talkies." The first feature-length movie originally presented as a talkie was The Jazz Singer , released in October 1927. In the United States, they helped secure Hollywood's position as one of the world's most powerful cultural/commercial systems.
    • Two case studies we have used are Disney's Snow White and Finding Nemo
  • 3. Animation
    • Animation is the rapid display of a sequence of images of 2-D or 3-D artwork or model positions in order to create an illusion of movement. It is an optical illusion of motion due to the phenomenon of persistence of vision, and can be created and demonstrated in a number of ways. The most common method of presenting animation is as a motion picture or video program, although several other forms of presenting animation also exist.
    • This is used in snow white and the seven dwarfs, one of Disney's first feature film in colour.
    • This image is an example of some animation development when making the film, see how images are overlaid to create a fluid movement.

    • Is the application of the field of computer graphics or, more specifically, 3D computer graphics to special effects in films, television programs, commercials, simulators and simulation generally, and printed media.

    • Film Distribution is the process or advertising
    • campaign, were the advertising team distribute
    • posters, adverts, trailers, and other advertising
    • techniques to promote the upcoming film.
    • To help understand this better we used a film as a case study and reviewed its methods and techniques.

  • 9. Harry Potter
    • Harry Potter Film Premiere
    • Harry Potter Screenings are hugely popular because of the amount of
    • advertising used months in advance of the film.
    • For Example the Harry Potter™ franchise consists of games which are brought
    • out after the film comes out in cinemas but before the film comes out on DVD.
    • Books which the movies are based on that are advertised when the film comes
    • out, and also Harry Potter™ soundtracks and toys which are released before
    • the film comes out on DVD.
  • 10. What Warner Bros Did
    • Warner Bros spent $155 million to market and distribute the film. The special edition two-disc DVD for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix contained two sneak peeks of the film.
    • A 15-second teaser for the film was shown alongside the IMAX release of The Dark Knight.
    • The first full-length domestic teaser trailer was released on 29 July on AOL's Moviefone website.
    • An international teaser was released on 26 October and the U.S. theatrical trailer was released on 14 November.
    • Scenes from the film were aired during ABC Family's three day Harry Potter marathon, which aired during 5–7 December 2008.
    • On 5 February 2009, the first three promotional teaser posters were released
    • On 5 March and 16 April 2009, new trailers were released by Warner Bros.
    • As with the previous films, EA Games will produce a video game based on the film.
    • On 10 March 2009, there would be a video game soundtrack, which was released on 17 March 2009.

  • 12. What is Screening?
    • Once a film has been produced and advertised the next step is to
    • screen it. This means to screen (show) the film at premieres and
    • cinema’s.
    • To launch the film it is most likely to be shown at a film festival or an
    • official film premiere and various special events to create awareness
    • among the target audience, and keep an ongoing excitement, following
    • and fascination with the film prior and during its release. These are
    • glamorous events with the actors, actresses and other guests attend
    • and continues the Hollywood lifestyle of the film industry.
    • For a better understand of Screening and it entails we have analyzed a
    • case study, looking at the showings and organised events before the
    • release of Twilight (2008)

  • 14. Twilight, based from the first novel in a four part saga by Stephenie Meyer, has been one of the fastest ticket selling films in history, earning over 7 million from midnight showings on its release alone, being closely outranked by Star Wars episode III, The Dark Knight and Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. A fantasy romance, Twilight tells the story of Bella Swan who after moving to the small town of Forks, Washington to live with her father meets Edward Cullen and their love for each other instantly follows. Only problem is, is that Edward happens to be a vampire. Although reluctant at first, Edward soon realises his need to be together with Bella is to strong, and Bella is just as enchanted by their bond. The film follows the beginning of Bella and Edwards’s relationship and as Edward must protect Bella from enemy vampires and himself.

These are the international release dates for Twilight, this is an excellent example of not only a movies launching worldwide but of the planning and organisation of when the film is shown in the different nations. Notice how the US and UK are the main intended audiences as it is a US film and they are used as a basis of the film release, the other nations release are planned after.   • 16.   This is an example of one of the trailers used at various screenings prior to the premier. TWILIGHT   See how this is arranged purposefully for screenings, it states main slogans that have been used for the advertising campaign ‘when you live forever, what do you live for?’, it shows short clips of key scenes and cuts to create hints of the story without spoiling any of the plot. Events Examples of events   Screening Event   This example of a screening event, it has the stars of the film presenting the show and gives us a good reference of a red carpet glamorous event   2008 Comic con in San Diego The July comic con In San Diego scheduled the attendance of director Catherine Hardwicke, cast members Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Cam Gigandet, Rachelle LaFevre, Edi Gathegi, Taylor Lautner and novel writer and Stephenie Meyer. This event involved panel discussions with the above, autograph signings and screenings of clips and trailers. This planned screening is essential for publicity and attracting attention of fans for the release of the film.
  • 18. Test Screening Test screenings are a method used to help predict what the audience's reaction will be after the film's actual release. A wide range of people are invited to watch the movie, and afterwards are given cards so that they can answer some questions of specific inquiries directly related to the film, such as whether it was exciting or thought provoking. From this the produces and funders of the film will decide whether to release the film or perhaps go make to filming, or dropping it all together.
  • 19. Premiere Premiere footage This Hollywood premiere of Twilight was a carefully planned and organised event. With stars from all aspects of Hollywood invited this red carpet event has journalists and critics waiting to review the long awaited film.
