  2. 2. What did people do long time ago before rulers, tape measures, metre sticks, ...etc? (pg.195) Also, a FATHOM, which used to be used to measure the depth of water from a boat was a stone attached to a piece of rope.  It was thrown into the water and slowly  measured by lengths of someone's outstretched arms as it came out.  It is now  standardized as 6 FEET.
  3. 3. There are TWO systems of measurement that are primarily used in the world: METRIC (SI) IMPERIAL * used mainly in Canada * used mainly in Europe, USA...
  4. 4. Let's see if we're comfortable with which system to use and which units to use to estimate some common measurements: ITEM  METRIC IMPERIAL    dist from Wpg to Brandon  length of pen  length of gym 
  5. 5. Let's see if we're comfortable actually estimating measurements of some fairly common items and distances: ITEM  METRIC IMPERIAL    dist from Wpg to Toronto length of a car width of your textbook 
  6. 6. ...and measure 5 things in  this room, using a cubit,  digit, span, hand, and  fathom BEFORE YOU  LEAVE TODAY. HOMEWORK pg.198; #1­7
  7. 7. FOR THE REST OF THIS UNIT STARTING  TOMORROW YOU NEED A RULER THAT  LOOKS LIKE THIS...METRIC ON ONE SIDE  AND IMPERIAL ON THE OTHER.
