Improving Education Trough Simulation

Published on

In this presentation, I explain how Computer simulation and 3D technologies can be efficiently used to improve education in Cameroon, especially in the field of experimental sciences (Physics, chemistry, biology,...). I then introduce the project 3D VirtuLab, which consists in the development of a web & mobile based virtual Laboratory specifically taylored to the official secondary school programs in Cameroon and eventually in other african countries.

Improving Education Trough Simulation

 1. 1. 3D virtuLab: Improving Education through simulation Paul Emmanuel NJIKI NJIKI , email: pnjiki@gmail.com
 2. 3. Experimentation in education?

The true method of knowledge is experiment. (William Blake)

A MUST in the learning of experimental sciences

Understanding where theoretical laws are coming from

Developing know-hows

No Labs, no development

 3. 4. In OUR LAND…

Few schools have well equiped labs.  expensiveness

Existing labs are not properly maintained  Cost of maintenance and exploitation

Teachers are not at ease with lab’s manipulation  trained by the same system !

Experimental sciences become pure theory!

 4. 5. Simulation: an alternative path?

Simulation is the imitation of some real thing, state of affairs, or process. [Wikipedia]

Simulation via computer := virtual reality

Replace real experimentation by virtual experimentation

 5. 6. Simulation: an alternative path?
 6. 7. Simulation: an alternative path? Pros Cons Not expensive (acquisition & maintenance) Does not reproduce all the complexity of real world Better than no experiment at all Too accurate: no experimental errors Conduct risky experiments safely
 7. 8. 3D VirtuLab Project: A customized virtual experimentation solution

A web & mobile accessible virtual experimentation platform

Specificaly taylored to our secondary school programs in Cameroon

Taking the simulation as close as possible to the reality by leveraging 3D technologies

Reusability of the components

 8. 9. Here is a bit of what I mean…
