A RIVER IS A NATURAL WATERCOURSE FLOWING TOWARDS AN OCEAN, A LAKE OR A SEA. RIVERS ARE INSEPARABLE PARTS OF OUR COUNTRY. A RIVER NOT ONLY FLOWS DOWN THE WATER INTO SEA, BUT ALSO CARRIES WITH HER VARIOUS DEPOSITS AND MINERALS IN DISSOLVED FORM.
RIVER MOUTH, WHERE FRESH WATER OF THE RIVER MERGES WITH THE SALINE OCEANIC WATER, IS THE LARGST BIO-PRODUCTIVE AREA. RIVERS ARE IMPORTANT SOURCES OF WATER FOR HOUSEHOLDS, INDUSTRY AND AGRICULTURE. IT PROVIDE US WITH FOOD, ENERGY, TRANSPORTATION ROUTES, AND WATER FOR IRRIGATION AND FOR DRINKING.
DAMS ARE STRUCTURES THAT HOLD BACK WATER, OR OTHER LIQUID MATERIAL REASONS TO BUILD A DAM: GENERATION OF HYDROELECTRICITY, IRRIGATION, CONTROL FLOODING. ACCORDING TO THE INTERNATIONAL COMMISSION ON LARGE DAMS, THE HEIGHT OF THE DAM FROM THE BASE TO ITS APEX MUST BE 15 METRES OR MORE, TO CALL IT A LARGE DAM.
DUE TO DAMS, FERTILE PLAINS WOULD SUBMERGE, PEOPLE WOULD BE DISPLACED, FORESTS AND AGRICULTURAL LAND WOULD BE LOST, AND SAFETY OF DAMS, FLOODS ETC. DAMS ARE EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE TO BUILD AND MUST BE BUILT TO A VERY HIGH STANDARD.
