  • 2. Obsessive compulsive disorder is a disorder of thebrain wherein a person feels the need to repeatedly doa certain task.A few affected people have repetitive thoughtpatterns, which they know are senseless but still makethem extremely anxious.Most people have both repeated obsessions as well ascompulsions to do certain things such as washingtheir hands a fixed number of times.
  • 3. Symptoms include both obsessions and compulsions.OCD obsessions usually have certain themes such asfear of contamination, sexual images or thoughts,having things orderly etc.OCD compulsions are certain behaviors that theaffected person tends to perform. These could bewashing and cleaning, counting, performing the sameaction repeatedly etc.

Factors that trigger OCD are:Family history: Having family members with thedisorder can increase the risk of developing OCD.Environmental factors: Brain injuries, infections etc.Stressful life events: If you tend to react strongly tostress, then the risk of OCD may increase. Stress alsoworsens the existing condition.
  • 5. The exact cause of OCD is still not known but a fewtheories are listed below.Biology: Changes in body’s natural chemistry or brainfunction.Genetics: OCD runs in families sometimes and can bepassed on.OCD may also stem from behavior related habitslearned over time.Insufficient serotonin
  • 6. Take medications as directed: If medication isstopped, OCD symptoms are likely to return.Pay attention to warning signs: If you have identifiedthings that may trigger OCD, consult your doctor andkeep a close track of it.Avoid drugs and alcoholManage stress with meditation, yoga, counseling etc.Check before taking any other medications.

Treating OCD can be difficult as the response to thetreatment varies from patient to patient.OCD is generally treated with psychotherapy,medication or both.Treatment is most effective with a combination ofpsychotherapy and medication.Exposure therapy (psychological treatment) - Thecompulsive person is exposed repeatedly to thosesituations they dread until those situations no longercan cause responses.
