  • 1. The largest natural crystals on Earth have beendiscovered in two caves within a silver and zincmine near Naica, in Chihuahua, Mexico.
  • 2. The Naica Mine of Chihuahua, Mexico, is aworking mine that is known for itsextraordinary crystals. Naica is a lead, zincand silver mine in which large voids havebeen found, containing crystals of selenite(gypsum) as large as 4 feet in diameter and50 feet long. The chamber holding thesecrystals is known as the Crystal Cave ofGiants, and is approximately 1000 feet downin the limestone host rock of the mine. Thecrystals were formed by hydrothermal fluidsemanating from the magma chambers below. The cavern was discovered while the minerswere drilling through the Naica fault, whichthey were worried would flood the mine. TheCave of Swords is another chamber in theNaica Mine, containing similar large crystals.
  • 3. In Naica theworkers canonly stay here30 min max. Inthis caves yu’rein 50 C grades
  • 4. He said that the sight was beautiful “…like light reflecting off a broken mirror”. The translucentcrystals lie pitched atop one another, as though moonbeams suddenly took on weight andsubstance. One month later, another team of Naica miners found an even larger cavernadjacent to the first one.
  • 5. "We need more onsite protection of mine caves," said geologist Carol A. Hill, co-author of the bookCave Minerals of the World, who calls the new discoveries "by far the largest selenite crystals I haveever heard of."
  • 6. Hill applauds the tourism plan. "Without it, the mining company would probably destroy the caves.Museums have enough crystals," she said. "Its important to preserve discoveries like this where theyoccur."
  • 7. The city of Chihuahua is the state capital of the Mexican state of Chihuahua. It has a population of about748,551. The predominant activity is light industry. The Naica Mine is located 100km to the N.E.
