  • 1.  Subhash Chandra Born 30 November 1950 (age 61) Birth place- Hisar Punjab(Present day Haryana), India Occupation - Chairman of Essel Group Religion –Hindu Residence- Mumbai, Maharashtra, India
  • 2.  Subhash Chandra was born on November 30th 1950 in Hisar, Haryana Chandra’s family was engaged in rice trading In class 12th he dropped out from the school He started vegetable oil unit After some time he took the reins of the family business and began to export Food grains He along with his brothers got into rice trading and exports. His company used to procure and supply rice to Food Corporation of India He earned a fortune exporting rice to Russia.
  • 3.  Subhash Chandra entered into the packaging business of in 1981, with Essel Packaging Limited It later merged with the Swiss group Propack A.G Essel packaging was the first company in India to introduce laminated tubes for packaging toothpastes. Today, Essel packaging is a world leader in laminated tubes with factories in all the five continents It has a 38 % market share in toothpaste packaging worldwide. In 1988, he set up the amusement park known as Essel world. Maharashtra government of the day was very oppressive compelling him to look outside the amusement park business for growth
  • 4.  He wanted to enter a business where there will be minimum hindrance between the entertainer and the entertained. This made him look at the television business. He decided to foray into broadcasting and was successful in leasing a transponder on AsiaSat owned by Star TV. Subhash Chandra launched Zee Telefilms Limited in October 1992 Indias first private satellite television channel Zee TV was the first Indian language channel on the satellite television Before the launch of Zee TV viewers in India were under the firm grip of Doordarshan Subhash Chandra and ZEE did face a lot of difficulties in dealing with AsiaSat and later even broke away from STAR. Today it is among the top 3 General Entertainment channel along with Star Plus and Colors. Zee TV became the first cable company in India to launch Internet over Cable services.
  • 5.  Zee TV network today has over 30 channels in many languages 9X,Zee TV, Zee Cinema, Zing, TEN Action+, TEN Cricket, TEN Sports, Zee Premiere, Zee Action, Zee Classic, Zee Smile, Zee Jagran, Zee Trendz, Zee Café, Zee Drama etc As a network they have the largest number of viewers and market-share in India. Zee TV has also launched regional channels in several regional languages Today, the Zee Network reaches out to 32 million homes across India, besides reaching out to countries like USA, the Caribbean islands, the Middle East, Europe, Africa, Far East, Australia and New Zealand.
  • 6.  Subhash Chandra brought concept of online lottery to India through his company Playwin Infravest Private Limited. It was one of the first such lotteries to be opened in India. Established in November 2001, it has operations in many Indian towns Playwin had its brief period of success, later got mired in various legal troubles, as many states banned lotteries. Today it is only allowed to play in Maharashtra and Goa
  • 7.  Essel group also has a moderately successful newspaper in DNA. A high-profile advertisement campaign with the tagline "Speak up, it’s in your DNA" preceded the birth of Daily News and Analysis in 2005 DNA is the first English broadsheet daily in India to introduce an all-colour page format DNA is currently published from Mumbai, Bangalore, Pune, Ahmedabad, Jaipur and Indore IRS (Indian relationship survey)ranked DNA as no. 6th among the Top Ten English Dailies in India.
  • 8.  Essel World is an amusement park in Gorai, Mumbai It was started in 1986 There are 34 major rides not including the coin operated games and the rides involving water It was the first amusement park in India

  • 10.  The 39th International Emmy Awards 2011on Monday, November 21st at the Hilton New York in New York City ZEE NEWS has won the coveted Consumer World Awards for the "Best Business News Channel“ Business Standard’s Businessman of the Year’ in 1999. ‘Global Indian Entertainment Personality of the Year’ by FICCI for 2004. Almost forgot to mention, he is ranked 16 in top 40 Indian Richest Business men by FORBES and 4th richest Asian in Britain by THE SUNDAY TIMES.
