Earlier in 20th century, this methodwas used for the purpose of helping students readand appreciate foreign language literature.,
In the 18th century foreignlanguages started to appear onthe school curricula, requiring asystematic approach to teachthem. Grammar Translation wasin fact first known in the UnitedStates as the Prussian Method.
