  • 2. INTRODUCTION
    • The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) was established in February 2009, attached to the Planning Commission.
    • 3. UIDAI – created as a statutory body under a separate legislation to fulfill its objectives. The law will also stipulate rules, regulations , processes and protocols to be followed by different agencies partnering with the Authority in issuing and verifying unique identity numbers.
  • FEATURES
    • The Unique Identification number (UID) will only provide identity
    • 4. A pro-poor approach
    • 5. Enrolment of residents with proper verification
    • 6. A partnership model
    • 7. Enrolment will not be mandated
    • 8. The number will not contain intelligence
  • PURPOSE
    • The purpose of the UIDAI is to issue a unique identification number (UID) to all Indian residents that is
    – robust enough to eliminate duplicate and fake identities, and
    – can be verified and authenticated in an easy, cost effective way

    • The UIDAI will only collect basic information on the resident -Name -Date of birth -Gender -Father's/Husband's name and UID number -Mother's/ Wife's name and UID number -Introducer's name and UID number -Address -Finger Prints, Iris scan and photograph
