Collaboration for Digital Preservation - Presentation Transcript

    1. Collaboration NHC produced the interviews, a cultural and intellectual history —in 862 parts — of the latter part of the 20th century. UNC provided the expertise in digitization and preservation. RENCI provides the scripting and programming expertise, as well as access to specialized hardware.
    2. Collaboration Work together on a common project, to produce something collectively Any collaborative project takes on the strength of all institutional partners plus something more Digital tools make it possible for projects to organize themselves in unprecedented ways. What WIRED magazine calls the new, digital socialism When masses of people who own the means of production work toward a common goal and share their products in common, when they contribute labor without wages and enjoy the fruits free of charge, it's not unreasonable to call that socialism. — WIRED MAGAZINE: 17.06 (June 2009)
    3. RENCI “ Docsoft:AV uses an advanced speech recognition engine to analyze the spoken content within digital AV files and converts it to an XML based format. The result can automatically be transformed to output formats such as Quicktime Text, RealText, SAMI or plain text. Combining the generated transcript file with the video will allow users to create the necessary closed caption feature for ADA compliance. Using the Docsoft:SA, indexing and search capabilities can now be obtained from the transcript originally generated by the ” Docsoft:AV appliance.

While it does not speed up the process, it engages the listener/ reader by showing a minimal amount of text at a time. demo
    7. Soundings online Instead of managing a team of editors, make available the tools for self-organization Website-based archive (of nearly all 862 episodes) iTunes U Podcasting Transcripts embedded in ID3 tags
    8. Documenting metadata: tells future technicians and technical audiences what was done (librarians, audiophiles, web-developers) plain language: tells interested parties what was done (senior leadership at instution) multimedia: speaks to known and unknown audiences (Board of Directors, general public)
