- 2. What a Clock Looks Like<br /><ul><li>Clocks have two hands, a big hand and a small hand.
- 3. The big hand tells time in minutes.
- 4. The small hand tells time in hours.</li></li></ul><li>What Do the Numerals Mean?<br /><ul><li>A clock has twelve numerals, 1-12.
- 5. Each one represents five minutes.
- 6. Twelve numerals x 5 minutes means that there are 60 minutes in one hour.</li></li></ul><li>Past or to the Hour?<br /><ul><li>If the minute hand is in the red region, it means that time is being told past the hour (the hour just started).
- 7. If the minute hand is in the green region, time is being told to the hour (a new hour is approaching).</li></li></ul><li>How the Clock Works<br />The clock can be split into quarters and halves.<br />If the big hand points at the 6, 30 minutes has passed (half of 60).<br />If the big hand points at the 3, 15 minutes has passed (half of 30).<br />30 minutes has passed<br />15 minutes has passed<br />
- 8. How the Clock Works Continued<br />If the big hand is at the 9, 45 minutes has passed (30 minutes + 15 more since it’s another quarter hour).<br />

- 10. Lets Look at Some Examples…<br /> Example 1:<br />The big hand is pointing at the 1, meaning 5 minutes has passed. The little hand is on the 12 meaning the hour is 12 o’clock. The time is then 12:05.<br />
- 11. Examples Cont.<br />Example 2:<br />The big hand is pointing at the 12 meaning it is on the hour, 0 minutes have passed. The little hand is on the 2, meaning the hour 2 o’clock. The time is 2:00.<br />
- 12. Examples Cont.<br />Example 3:<br />The big hand is just about on the 1 meaning a little under 5 minutes has passed. The small hand is on the 5 meaning the hour is 5 o’clock. The time is roughly 5:04.<br />
- 13. Examples Cont.<br />Example 4:<br />The big hand is on the 5 meaning that 25 minutes has passed (count by 5’s until you reach numeral 5). The little hand is on 10 meaning the hour is 10 o’clock. The time is 10:25.<br />
- 14. Final Example<br />Example 5:<br />The big hand is just a little past the 5 meaning a little more than 25 minutes has passed (count by 5’s until you reach numeral 5). The little hand is on the 9 meaning the hour is 9 o’clock. The time is roughly 9:26.<br />
- 15. Review<br /><ul><li>The big hand tells time in minutes.
