  • Here's the major shift I'd suggest: Recruit people who are willing to make your page their default browser starting page. If they don't, then they aren't part of your intervention.

    Your conceptual design is too soft on this point. And I say you can be more assertive. In this early stage, you can selectively recruit people -- only those willing to make this adjustment on day 1. Then you can see if this default page approach works with this audience. It clearly has potential. The details will matter.

  • I like the idea of putting the sunscreen close to toothpaste - can you somehow tie them together? how do you keep them together in the long run?
    I also like the idea of giving weather updates - besides just weather, it’d be good to know more info, relevant to sunscreen. is it going to be a strong sunny day? if yes, how much sunscreen should i be using? think about how you can tie in weather with sunscreen in an effective way.
    I wonder if you can combine these two very different ideas in a coherent manner. At this point, my hunch is that you should just give it a shot - you’ll learn a ton!

      • - To motivate people to apply sunscreen daily in order to prevent
      • harmful exposure to UVA and UVB rays.

  • 4. A Day in Kelley Hug’s Life Stanford University, Spring 2010 CS377v - Creating Health Habits habits.stanford.edu After practice she rinses off and heads to class. While in class, she opens her computer and opens her browser. Her open page informs Kelley to put on sunscreen to prevent harmful UV rays and asks is she’s put some on already. After replying, Kelley is shown a chart of the days she and her teammates have applied sunscreen. They’ve made a small competition using the web page. Kelley wakes up at 6am to get ready for her morning swimming practice. She performs her normal routine of brushing her teeth and getting dressed before leaving. Kelley notices the sunscreen bottle placed next to her toothpaste and remembers to apply some to her face before she leaves. She goes to Avery Aquatic Center and practices along with her team for 2 hours under the morning sun. After class, she heads back to practice and discusses with her teammates their sunscreen usage and who is leading the charts so far.
  • 5. Prototype of SunCast
      • SunCast is a webpage users can navigate to, in order to update their sunscreen usage.
      • Users are encouraged to set this web page as their home page so that it is the first thing they see when they open their browser.
      • A short paragraph on the web page explains some of the harmful effects of prolonged sun exposure and motivates users to apply sunscreen everyday.
      • Users can record their daily usage and track their friends’ use of sunscreen.

  • 6. Features/Functionality
      • User enters in email and name to login to the system.
      • After sign-up, users are given a bottle of sunscreen and told to place it next to the toiletries they use everyday in the morning. They are also told to set their home page to the SunCast web page for one week.
      • Users record and track their use and their friends’ use of sunscreen.
      • After the mandatory first week, users can either change their home page or keep the SunCast home page.

  • 7. Theoretical Justifications
      • Sequence – Habit is attached to an existing habit (getting ready in the morning, brushing teeth, etc)
      • Lightest Touch – There aren’t any intrusive or daily reminders sent to the user. The SunCast web page can be accessed when they open their browser or can be navigated to at a later time.
      • Motivation – Friends can track their sunscreen use. They will be motivated to use the sunscreen since they are being held responsible not only to themselves but to their teammates.
      • Ability is increased since the sunscreen is provided freely.

  • 8. Plans for User Testing
      • Approach Stanford University Women’s Swimming team and recruit people interested in the study (at least 5 people).
      • Pass out free sunscreen and inform them the study will officially last a week.
      • After a week, participants can continue using the website or not.
      • Further user testing would first include students active in maintaining their health (i.e. students who frequent the gym) and would later include all students.

  • 9. Shortcomings of Design
      • Not every person has a daily morning routine that they can add this habit onto.
      • People will forget to apply sunscreen before they go outside if they do not open their browser in the beginning of the day.
      • People will forget to place sunscreen next to their toiletries.

  • 10. Expansion - What else is possible?
      • Users can edit who they are tracking.
      • After users report their habit for a week, they’ll receive a number or percentage that signifies how much they’ve reduced their risk to skin cancer
      • Add functionality to allow users to update their other friends on their sunscreen use through Facebook or Twitter

  • 11. Next Steps in Design Process
      • Create functional website for users to login and track their sunscreen use.
      • User test with the women’s swimming team
      • Get feedback from users to improve the website and to include other functionality that is needed.
