Re: Workshop on scientific publishing
Date: 11 September 2010

Dear all:

I have been preparing materials for the upcoming CORE workshop entitled ´Scientific Publishing´ and
would like to share information about the event and to make a few requests from workshop
participants. You may have already seen a description of the workshop, but if not please find it
below:

                                    Publishing in Academic Journals:
A Workshop on Procedures and Practices
                                           Thursday, 11 November 2010, 9.00-12.00
                                          Doctoral School of Communication Studies
                                                     University of Tampere
                                                Location details to be announced
Myriad considerations play a role in preparing a scholarly journal article for publication: To what journal should the work be
submitted, how should the editor be approached, what procedures should be followed in preparing a manuscript for
submission, what form of peer review is followed and how does decision-making regarding publication transpire? In this
workshop, Nicholas Jankowski, co-editor of New Media & Society (NM&S), will outline the procedures followed by NM&S
and many other journals in the field of communication studies. He will draw on more than a decade of processing
submissions to NM&S and to the Communications: European Journal of Communication Research. The workshop is
intended for graduate students and scholars in an early phase of their careers who are concerned about establishing a
publishing portfolio. A packet of materials regarding submitting manuscripts to academic journals (e.g., sample letters, style
guides, Internet-based resources, and an article describing common reasons for manuscript rejection) will be made available
to persons that preregister for the workshop. During the workshop, participants will be encouraged to share their experiences
in submitting manuscripts to journals.

The packet of materials mentioned in the above description is available on SlideShare at this URL. In
the event that URL is not functioning, kindly try this shortened version: http://alturl.com/wehwf.

Sage Publications is making available print copies of New Media & Society (NM&S) for distribution
during the workshop. In addition, Sage is providing free access to the online version of NM&S
through 31 December 2010, available at the following page of the Sage Journals Online (SJO) site:
https://online.sagepub.com/cgi/register?registration=FTNMSFIN

In preparation for the workshop I have several requests. First, please become familiar with NM&S by
scanning previously published articles and by trying out various features available on the SJO site.
While examining this material, please consider the following general question: What are the
publishing policies and practices of NM&S?

A large number of journals address topics related to new media; a few of these titles are noted
below. Please examine some of these titles and, while doing so, consider the following question: How
do the policies and practices of these journals compare with NM&S?

      Information, Communication &  J. of Computer/Mediated
          Society Communication
 Convergence  The Information Society
      Media, Culture & Society  Intern´l J. of Communication
 TV & New Media  Information Polity
 Javnost / The Public  Electronic J. of Communication

                                                              1
 First Monday  Social Science Computer Review
      European J. of Communication  M/C Journal
      J. of Information Technology & Politics
      Policy & Internet

Workshop participants come from a broad range of disciplines in the field of communications, and
other journals than those noted above reflect the concerns of those disciplines. What are the core
journals in the discipline with which you are affiliated; which titles are you expected to monitor
regularly; in which of these titles does your department recommend submitting articles for
publication? More generally, how do the policies and practices of these journals compare?

Finally, I expect that some workshop participants have already published journal articles. Others have
presented conference papers and considered these for journal submission. Please email to me the
title and abstract of a paper published or presented at a seminar or conference. I will compile those
sent to me by 5 November and refer to some of them during the workshop.

I look forward to meeting all of you in November.

Sincerely,

Nick Jankowski
nickjan@xs4all.nl

p.s. On the day prior to the workshop I will be giving a presentation on scholarly publishing; the title
and abstract are noted below. You are all cordially invited to attend this event as well.

                                                    Nicholas W. Jankowski
Visiting Fellow, Virtual knowledge Studio for the Humanities and Social Sciences
                                                  Amsterdam, the Netherlands
                                                       nickjan@xs4all.nl

Publishers, editors, and authors have been exploring ways to utilize the potentials of Web-based publishing for many years,
but concern has recently intensified for a variety of reasons: the financial crisis in scholarly publishing, increasing interest in
open access venues, institutional and funding agency demands for open repositories, reservations about peer review as
procedure for determination of quality. Perhaps most salient in the considerations for change is the growing interest in Web-
based formats permitting audience engagement, inclusion of multimedia in the publications, and utilization of full-color and
dynamic visualizations - features frequently associated with Web 2.0 and social media. These developments and concerns
constitute some of the topics to be addressed during a roundtable of editors and scholars attending the Association of Internet
Researchers conference IR 11.0 in Gothenburg, Sweden, in October 2010. This presentation, scheduled a month later in
Finland, will extend that discussion through examination of concrete alternatives for established print-oriented scholarly
journals interested in making the transition to the Digital Age

                                                                 2

Letter to CORE workshop participants, jankowski, 11sept2010

  • 1. To: Participants in Finnish Doctoral School of Communication (CORE) From: Nick Jankowski Re: Workshop on scientific publishing Date: 11 September 2010 Dear all: I have been preparing materials for the upcoming CORE workshop entitled ´Scientific Publishing´ and would like to share information about the event and to make a few requests from workshop participants. You may have already seen a description of the workshop, but if not please find it below: Publishing in Academic Journals: A Workshop on Procedures and Practices Thursday, 11 November 2010, 9.00-12.00 Doctoral School of Communication Studies University of Tampere Location details to be announced Myriad considerations play a role in preparing a scholarly journal article for publication: To what journal should the work be submitted, how should the editor be approached, what procedures should be followed in preparing a manuscript for submission, what form of peer review is followed and how does decision-making regarding publication transpire? In this workshop, Nicholas Jankowski, co-editor of New Media & Society (NM&S), will outline the procedures followed by NM&S and many other journals in the field of communication studies. He will draw on more than a decade of processing submissions to NM&S and to the Communications: European Journal of Communication Research. The workshop is intended for graduate students and scholars in an early phase of their careers who are concerned about establishing a publishing portfolio. A packet of materials regarding submitting manuscripts to academic journals (e.g., sample letters, style guides, Internet-based resources, and an article describing common reasons for manuscript rejection) will be made available to persons that preregister for the workshop. During the workshop, participants will be encouraged to share their experiences in submitting manuscripts to journals. The packet of materials mentioned in the above description is available on SlideShare at this URL. In the event that URL is not functioning, kindly try this shortened version: http://alturl.com/wehwf. Sage Publications is making available print copies of New Media & Society (NM&S) for distribution during the workshop. In addition, Sage is providing free access to the online version of NM&S through 31 December 2010, available at the following page of the Sage Journals Online (SJO) site: https://online.sagepub.com/cgi/register?registration=FTNMSFIN In preparation for the workshop I have several requests. First, please become familiar with NM&S by scanning previously published articles and by trying out various features available on the SJO site. While examining this material, please consider the following general question: What are the publishing policies and practices of NM&S? A large number of journals address topics related to new media; a few of these titles are noted below. Please examine some of these titles and, while doing so, consider the following question: How do the policies and practices of these journals compare with NM&S?  Information, Communication &  J. of Computer/Mediated Society Communication  Convergence  The Information Society  Media, Culture & Society  Intern´l J. of Communication  TV & New Media  Information Polity  Javnost / The Public  Electronic J. of Communication 1
  • 2. First Monday  Social Science Computer Review  European J. of Communication  M/C Journal  J. of Information Technology & Politics  Policy & Internet Workshop participants come from a broad range of disciplines in the field of communications, and other journals than those noted above reflect the concerns of those disciplines. What are the core journals in the discipline with which you are affiliated; which titles are you expected to monitor regularly; in which of these titles does your department recommend submitting articles for publication? More generally, how do the policies and practices of these journals compare? Finally, I expect that some workshop participants have already published journal articles. Others have presented conference papers and considered these for journal submission. Please email to me the title and abstract of a paper published or presented at a seminar or conference. I will compile those sent to me by 5 November and refer to some of them during the workshop. I look forward to meeting all of you in November. Sincerely, Nick Jankowski nickjan@xs4all.nl p.s. On the day prior to the workshop I will be giving a presentation on scholarly publishing; the title and abstract are noted below. You are all cordially invited to attend this event as well. Scholarly Publishing in the Digital Era: Changes, Challenges, Innovations Wednesday, 10 November 2010, 14.00-16.00 Doctoral School of Communication Studies University of Tampere Location details to be announced Finland Nicholas W. Jankowski Visiting Fellow, Virtual knowledge Studio for the Humanities and Social Sciences Amsterdam, the Netherlands nickjan@xs4all.nl Publishers, editors, and authors have been exploring ways to utilize the potentials of Web-based publishing for many years, but concern has recently intensified for a variety of reasons: the financial crisis in scholarly publishing, increasing interest in open access venues, institutional and funding agency demands for open repositories, reservations about peer review as procedure for determination of quality. Perhaps most salient in the considerations for change is the growing interest in Web- based formats permitting audience engagement, inclusion of multimedia in the publications, and utilization of full-color and dynamic visualizations - features frequently associated with Web 2.0 and social media. These developments and concerns constitute some of the topics to be addressed during a roundtable of editors and scholars attending the Association of Internet Researchers conference IR 11.0 in Gothenburg, Sweden, in October 2010. This presentation, scheduled a month later in Finland, will extend that discussion through examination of concrete alternatives for established print-oriented scholarly journals interested in making the transition to the Digital Age 2
