  • 6. Barriers to Preschool Attendance
    • Too expensive
    • None in our area
    • No transportation
    • Unreliable transportation
    • Scheduling conflicts
    • Child not ready for school
  • 7. Barriers to Preschool Attendance: 1. Too expensive Preschool experience for 4-year olds runs from $80-$115 For families making minimum wage, preschool may be cost prohibitive. ($5.85 X 40 hrs=$234/week or $930/month)
  • 8. Barriers to Preschool Attendance: 2. None in our area Buffalo area = 0 Lincoln area = 0 Jefferson area = ORL Preschool ($85/month + $35 snack fee=$800/year)
  • 9. Reality of Kindergarten in 2007 Standards have changed a lot of things for Kindergarten learners: **Higher expectations of prelearning **Social Skills prior to entry **Behaviors of sharing and cooperating **More academic
  • 10. Students without preschool are at a tremendous disadvantage!!
  • 11. ‘ One of the greatest predictors of school success is LANGUAGE and early exposure to the written word.
  • 12. 30 million word differential By age 3, children in homes of poverty have been exposed to 30 million less words than children growing up in homes of wealth.
  • 13. By age 4: Cumulative words per hour: Homes of Poverty=500 Middle Class Homes=1300 Homes of professionals/wealth=2300 Comparisons of exposures/experiences with language
