Hey everyone! I’m sorry I haven’t seen the comments coming in. I really appreciate the feedback. I think most of you have hit it on the head. I’m appealing to a mixture of people who don’t have the equipment or tech savvy to do this and people who don’t really have the time. Also remember that most people have flatbed scanners or multi-function printers with scanners, both of which are slow and tedious. By having dedicated professionals with high-speed equipment the process could be gotten through extremely quickly.

The security question is my biggest concern since a rogue employee could be hoovering up people’s docs. I think it might be interesting to send the person out with a custom laptop with a software on board that only stores data for the session and the person in the home is emailed a key that they enter when the scanning starts that ensures all data is locked and the deleted afterwards. Of course this hinders the upsell online storage but it’s a thought.

We are very tech savvy people but hate wasting our time using the scanner. 1-2 times per year my husband goes through all our papers and scans important documents. We would pay for this service - what a huge time saver and would clean up the clutter.

Very good idea. One question: how do you protect people from unscrupulous ’partners’ in local areas who just happen to keep a copy of that credit card info for themselves...

I am your target audience and I love this idea. So what if I have a scanner? I don’t want to take the time to do it. I want all my tax crap somewhere safe so if I ever need it, it’s there -- I’m sick of it taking up room in my closet. Would love to have all my old photos scanned. Etc.

You may want to hook up with 'professional organizers' and they could offer it as an add-on. But no way would I start so large - test-market it in a high-end neighborhood, possibly older folks, and emphasize the safety, convenience, and organizational aspects of it all.

Yeah, but Xerox only does it for businesses. The focus of his business is for consumers. The idea’s not bad - just the bend.

Here’s the problem. There are thousands if not millions of seniors with all kinds of records and a lack of patience to learn a scanning system and the will to use it. They’re certainly not lacking the time (well, maybe now the economy’s gone south they’re working again) but the will to use another piece of technology is not there.

They’re interested in genealogy, in how their legacy is going to be remembered.

THAT’S how to make this work. I have *thousands* of genealogical documents that I need to get around to scanning and OCR’ing. I don’t have the time right now (I’m probably not the best target market) - but every time I see a relative, I get more requests to scan stuff so people will remember them - pictures, letters, old records.

If you take it to Kinkos, its $12 for the disk by itself and they charge you a pretty hefty fee for scanning the documents. They don’t allow you to do them yourself.

If you use a service a lot of times you have to mail sensitive documents away for weeks at a time. Are you going to trust your financial records or your one of a kind photos from the 1800s to the postal service, a company in who knows where, etc? I’d trust the guy in front of me to scan it and go.

The only issue I see here, especially with photographs, is copyright. You would have to have a mechanism to make sure that nothing you do is going to be copyrighted by anyone outside the family.

The point is not that people have a scanner and can use it - its that many people don’t want to, can’t, or don’t have the time to use it. Think a fast food model - people can make and eat great hamburgers at home, but they can’t/don’t have the time/don’t want to so they hop to the McDonalds or Burger King.

I think Noah’s got a great idea - now only if he can price it reasonably and get it started in my hometown :-)

Huge corporations are already doing this; Xerox being one of them. Mark is right, four or fives years ago you would have been golden.

Noah, I think your idea is interesting. In this economy, its a luxury service that I don’t think people will pay for.

My curiousity, however, is if the business is already running. I can think of some much more interesting ideas to do with it where it would take advantage of the fact that some of us don’t want to spend 10 hours scanning to our home scanner.

I think the guy refers to people who have no idea on how to use their scanners and maybe barely use their computers. That’s why the scan master come in.

But I already have this sort of thing on my desk. I think the scanner cost $200. Very easy to use despite the limitation on connecting it to weapons systems. See:
