  2. 2. Ocean Cruises 2013-15 Welcome to the latest brochure featuring holidays on board elegant Marco Polo much- loved Discovery, two delightful, smaller and more intimate vessels that have built an enviable reputation for providing traditional cruise experiences at exceptional value-for-money prices. The following pages offer some wonderful opportunities to enjoy unforgettable ‘No-Flying’ cruises from a selection of UK ports, as well as ‘Fly-Cruises’ featuring some exciting destinations in the Mediterranean and Black Sea. The popularity of cruising continues to grow, especially on ships that combine all the magic of fascinating ports of call with an on-board ambience that is perfectly conducive to rest and relaxation – with fine dining, first-class entertainment and interesting guest speakers, comfortable accommodation and a host of amenities and activities to enjoy, but without the crowds and the overbearing razzamatazz of larger ships. Join Marco Polo at the London Cruise Terminal in Tilbury, to journey to the winter warmth of the Amazon and Caribbean, go in search of the Northern Lights, discover the British Isles, the glorious Norwegian Fjords or Baltic cities and more. Sail from Edinburgh’s port of Leith to the North Cape or Iceland, or – in 2014 – from Newcastle to destinations that include the Majestic Fjordlands and the Scottish Isles. Discovery offers 2013 sailings from Harwich or Newcastle or, and 2014 voyages from Bristol Avonmouth, Liverpool, Greenock, Leith, Hull or Rosyth to an equally wonderful selection of fascinating destinations. The ship’s 2013 ‘south to the sun’ fly-cruises feature return flights from London, Manchester and a selection of regional airports. We know that wherever you choose to join us, you can look forward to a marvellous value, memorable cruise holiday on Marco Polo or Discovery, and we look forward to the pleasure of your company! 4. 4. WELCOME 3 Each of our cruises on board these two wonderful ships – whether a one-night ‘mini-cruise’ or a six-week journey of discovery – offers everything you could wish for in a memorable holiday. Wake refreshed from a night’s sleep in your comfortable cabin (or perhaps a little bleary from the previous evening), and contemplate the waiting day. Head for an exercise class or the fitness centre to ward off the guilt pangs at the calorie intake… then head for breakfast! Join in a daily quiz or attend an informative lecture to learn about the next fascinating port of call. Competitive types might sign up for deck games, enthusiasts for dance classes – 5, 6, 7, 8! – while like-minded folk might meet in the card room for a hand or two of bridge, or others retire to a quiet corner of a lounge or library to curl up with a good book. Of course, on fine days, a deckchair or sun-lounger might be the place in which to pass a few hours, as you take in the views. On most cruises, guest speakers will give informative talks about upcoming ports and nearby places of interest, as well as the bird, aquatic, or wildlife that you might expect to encounter. Your cabin – you can choose from a range of categories – will be looked after by your steward and housekeeper, who will ensure that beds are made, towels are changed and toiletries replenished. The Cruise Director and the staff ensure that there’s always something going on, for those that are interested, and publish a daily newsletter to keep you updated. When evening comes, with the sun setting over the sea or on another port of call, enjoy a wonderful meal in relaxed company, and then be royally entertained. If the stars are out, take a turn on the deck, or perhaps enjoy a nightcap in a comfortable lounge, before turning in with memories of the day just gone and dreams of what awaits tomorrow. The beauty of a cruising holiday is that you can choose exactly what you want to do, when you want to do it, and we’ll do the rest for you. Our great value cruises on board Marco Polo and Discovery will bring you all this and more, and we know that you’re going to enjoy every minute of your time with us! Your cruise price includes all on-board activities and entertainment, and Sterling is the on-board currency on both vessels. The Ever-changing Wonder of Cruising The greatest pleasure of a cruise holiday is the knowledge that as each day dawns, there’ll be a new adventure to discover, a new experience to enjoy, a new vista to savour, new plans to be made. From the moment you rise, until you retire to your cabin, wherever you find yourself, at sea or in port, there’s a vast array of things to do or not to do. It’s entirely up to you! “A wonderful trip... the food, entertainment and friendly crew were all excellent. ”Mrs S, South Devon Spring Gardens Cruise 4 THENEWMARKETDIFFERENCE To book please call 0843 316 1160 or see the enclosed leaflet BOOK_OCEANCRUISEMAY13.indb4 04/06/201314:30
  5. 5. WELCOME These cruise holidays are brought to you by some of the foremost experts in the field, and you are assured of a first-class experience every step of the way, whichever of these wonderful cruises – on either of these wonderful ships – you decide to join. Newmarket Holidays is part of the Newmarket Group, one of the UK’s leading privately owned tour operators, established in 1983. Over the course of the last 30 years, we have had the pleasure of introducing thousands of happy customers to the joys of cruising, and we are looking forward to continuing our long association with Marco Polo and to sailing on Discovery for the first time. Marco Polo and Discovery are operated by Cruise & Maritime Voyages, whose experience of organising cruises for UK cruise holidaymakers stretches back over a quarter century. Cruise & Maritime, together with the operational expertise of vastly experienced Global Maritime Group, the ships’ manager, will ensure that guests on board both these wonderful ships will enjoy unforgettable holidays. Both Newmarket Holidays and Cruise & Maritime Voyages share the same philosophy – to provide outstanding cruise experiences at genuine value-for-money prices. Exciting Shore Excursions For many the highlight of a cruise holiday is the chance, on arrival in each new port of call, to go ashore and explore new surroundings. No sooner will your ship have tied up – or dropped anchor when the shore transfer is to be by ship’s tender – than the excitement will mount. Coaches will be waiting on the quayside ready to take you off on an organised optional shore excursion, in the company of friendly, knowledgeable guides. Fascinating Guest Speakers A much-loved cruising tradition is the opportunity, whilst on board, to attend light-hearted, but absorbing lectures given by an expert in a particular subject field, someone whose experience and insight, or specific sphere of interest – sometimes linked with the cruise itinerary – offers the chance to peek behind the subject’s invariably fascinating curtains. On Marco Polo and Discovery, this tradition is carried on during longer cruises, and guest speakers will offer informative talks on a wide range of fascinating topics. ‘Super Craft’ Cruises, and ‘A Laugh on the Ocean Wave!’ On a number of cruises featured in this brochure, in addition to all the enjoyment of the ship’s amenities, and the fascinating ports of call, there’ll be the chance to learn a new skill – e.g. millinery, calligraphy, decorative card art and so on – from an on-board expert. Please note that the craftsperson may make a small charge for materials. A number of cruises will feature the presence of guest comedians, who will not only add to the evenings’ entertainment programme, but will appear in ‘Comedy Corner’ interviews with the on-board Cruise Director during the voyage. Look out for these special cruises on the following pages! Newmarket, Marco Polo and Discovery – a perfect combination “The excursions were top class, and the entertainment and facilities on board were great! We had a wonderful time! ”Mr & Mrs J, Scarborough Baltic Cities Cruise de. All Our Cruise Prices include: l Excellent service from an attentive crew l Full-board arrangements – including excellent British and International cuisine, afternoon tea and late-night snacks l A comfortable cabin l First-class daytime and evening entertainment l Guest Speakers (except on shorter cruises) l A wide range of on-board amenities l Exciting itineraries and fascinating ports of call l Port Taxes 5 THENEWMARKETDIFFERENCE To book please call 0843 316 1160 or see the enclosed leaflet BOOK_OCEANCRUISEMAY13.indb5 04/06/201314:30
  6. 6. Life on Board Marco Polo Welcome Aboard! Marco Polo, already well known to British cruise holidaymakers, will continue to sail from Tilbury in 2013 and 2014, as well as offering sailings from Edinburgh’s Port of Leith in 2013, and Newcastle in 2014. Fully stabilised and air-conditioned, Marco Polo boasts eight passenger decks, which are serviced by four lifts and three wide stairwells. A vast amount of deck space, especially in the stylishly raked aft-section of the ship, gathered around the pool and Pool Bar, ensures plenty of viewing opportunities, more-than-ample room for sunbathers to top up their tans, as well as space for the energetic to enjoy deck games. A turn around Amundsen Deck, or the complete circuit round Columbus Deck, which includes a ‘jogging’ section, balances out the calorie intake. From the moment you step aboard on the spacious, stylish Magellan Deck, where you’ll find the attractive lobby area, you are aware that here is an impressive vessel. A range of comfortable lounges and bars, a beautiful main dining room and a light and airy bistro adjacent to the pool, a large, eye-catching shopping arcade, the Livingston library, the Nansen card room and an internet room all cater to your cruising pleasures by day and night. The Jade Wellness Centre is well equipped for the body- conscious, with a gym, a hair and beauty salon, massage and sauna area, as well as adjacent deck-top Jacuzzis. The Cruise Director and the team will provide a full programme of entertainment in which you can join if you wish, light-hearted quizzes to port lectures, exercise classes to dance instruction – while of course there’s always the ever-changing view to savour, and new ports of call to explore. In an age of vast, impersonal, floating hotels, 22,000-tonne Marco Polo, her profile marking her out as the epitome of sea-going elegance even before you’ve stepped aboard, is a beautiful ocean liner in the classic tradition. Offering high levels of comfort, sumptuous dining in stylish surrounds, and a genuinely warm welcome from a crew who go out of their way to place your enjoyment of your holiday above everything else, Marco Polo will offer everything you might expect of such a vessel, from the minute you first glimpse her, until the time you bid her “Adieu”. “ ” We would tell anyone to go with you. As an alternative restaurant venue, pool-side Marco’s, the ship’s more casual location, is every bit as enjoyable, whether it’s for an early breakfast or relaxed lunch – perhaps taken al fresco – or for a less formal evening, does not suffer by comparison. Wherever you choose to eat, you can accompany your meal with a selection from the ship’s extensive and reasonably priced wine list. During each cruise (of 6 nights or more) there will be a Captain’s Welcome and Farewell Party, as well as other themed dinners. Of course, all meals on board Marco Polo, including morning coffee and afternoon tea and cakes and late night snacks, are included in the great value cruise prices. Dining is always a pleasure! There are plenty of options when it comes to mealtimes on board Marco Polo, and as is invariably the case on board ship, calorie- counters and the diet-conscious will have difficulties resisting temptation, as sumptuous meals balance out any time spent in the fitness centre, or any number of turns round Amundsen Deck! The ship’s main dining room, the Waldorf, situated low on Atlantic Deck, is a haven of understated elegance, where friendly and attentive waiters ensure that each meal is a special experience. Marco Polo’s chefs do their level best to ensure that diets are forgotten, although there is always the ‘Healthy Choice’ option for the guilty, or saintly, to choose. 9. 9. Daytime & Evening Entertainment There’s always something happening on board Marco Polo, by day or by night. During the day, if you haven’t taken a shore excursion or headed off to explore under your own steam – and especially on the days at sea that for some are the most enjoyable of all – the Cruise Director and the team will always have something planned – look out for the Daily Programme in your cabin. After dinner the curtain goes up in the Marco Polo theatre lounge on a glittering nightly show. Sit back as the talented team of singers and dancers entertains you with some first class performances in excellent surroundings. Marco Polo’s wide range of other lounges are relaxed and convivial, perfect for enjoying the company of new-found friends, and whether its for a nightcap in the piano bar, or dancing in Scott’s, the ship really does offer something for all tastes until you turn in, perhaps after a final ‘turn on the deck’. Join the crowds on the harbourside, and wander through the narrow cobbled streets of this important Hanseatic city, birthplace of Grieg and royal residence. Don’t miss the ancient Bryggen area, and perhaps take the Fløibanen funicular to the heights above. Rising up out of the sea like miniature Alps, the wild and beautiful Lofoten Islands, amongst which Marco Polo arrives this morning, offer almost unsurpassed scenic splendour, with breathtakingly beautiful, tiny fishing villages (with even tinier names like ‘Å’ ) set beneath the towering peaks, sheer cliffs and jagged rock formations, hemmed in by the sea. Warmed by the Gulf Stream, the island waters are the spawning ground for Arctic cod, and everywhere the fishing industry is in evidence. Marco Polo calls at Leknes, nestled at the foot of stunning, Alpine-like scenery, and there’ll be an opportunity to explore this most beautiful corner of the world on a shore excursion. This evening, one of the undoubted highlights of the holiday begins, with a wonderful cruise in the evening light through the Inside Passage, passing the stunning scenery of Solbergfjord, Gisund and Grøtsund. 16. 16. Day One Welcome Aboard! Make your way to the London Cruise Terminal for embarkation, and enjoy your first night on board. Day Two Enjoy the atmosphere on board, and get to know Marco Polo and your fellow passengers. A special feature of this cruise is the chance to learn a new skill from an expert in one of our ‘Super Craft’ sessions, which will take place throughout the voyage. Day Three ~ Eidfjord, Hardangerfjord Marco Polo makes her way into stunning Hardangerfjord, stretching into the Norwegian interior. Be on deck early to get your first glimpse of this stunning landscape, where sheer mountainsides plunge into the still waters. Our first Norwegian call is at Eidfjord, at the eastern end of the fjord. Here, you can go ashore to enjoy an overland excursion through the almost unimaginably beautiful surrounding countryside, perhaps including a visit to the famous Vøringfossen waterfalls. Day Four ~ Olden Today’s call brings the opportunity to take and unforgettable excursion to the famous Briksdal Glacier, part of the vast mass of the Jostedalsbreen ice-pack, which broods over the fjord. Day Five Marco Polo cruises further north along the stunning Norwegian coast. Day Six ~ Leknes, Lofoten Islands Early this morning Marco Polo will cross the Arctic Circle, as she steams into some of Europe’s most spectacular waters. Rising up out of the sea like miniature Alps, the wild and beautiful Lofoten Islands, amongst which Marco Polo arrives this morning, offer almost unsurpassed scenic splendour, with breathtakingly beautiful, tiny fishing villages (with even tinier names like ‘Å’) set beneath the towering peaks, sheer cliffs and jagged rock formations, hemmed in by the sea. The Northern Lights Departing October 6th 2013, October 27th 2014 – 15 Days Marco Polo makes an autumn visit to Norway’s fjord- and island-dotted coastline, in search of the spectacle of the Aurora Borealis, the celestial phenomenon that has bewitched and entranced generations. In addition to the chance to experience one of Earth’s truly most awe-inspiring sights, this enchanting cruise includes the opportunity to learn a new skill from one of our ‘Super Craft’ experts. 17. 17. Day Seven ~ Alta Marco Polo calls at remote Alta, gateway to the Arctic region of Finnmark, home to the indigenous Sami people, to herds of reindeer, and to the nearby Ice Hotel, where guests famously sleep in frozen accommodation on reindeer skins. Alta is also close to the UNESCO-World Heritage site of the Hjemmeluft prehistoric rock carvings, northern Europe’s most extensively preserved examples, dating from between 2500 and 6000 years old. Marco Polo sails late this evening, enabling you to make the most of your stay in Alta. In this remote region, the awe-inspiring nature of the Northern Lights – should you be fortunate enough to see them – is more acutely felt. Day Eight ~ Honningsvåg Marco Polo cruises way beyond the Arctic Circle, and the high point will come today, as Marco Polo docks in the pretty, remote ‘village’ of Honningsvåg, and you can make you way on an optional excursion to the famous visitor centre at Nordkapp, or North Cape, almost at Europe’s northernmost point. You’ll return to the ship, passing Knivskjellodden, Europe’s true north tip, before Marco Polo turns south once more on her Norwegian coastal voyage. Day Nine ~ Tromsø The city of Tromsø, with its daily market and fascinating Polarmuseum, which chronicles the lives and exploits of the likes of Amundsen and Nansen, is today’s port of call. Go ashore to explore, and don’t miss the magnificent ‘Arctic Cathedral’, with its stained glass and unique, ‘ship-shaped’ organ. Day Ten ~ Narvik The friendly port and ski-resort (it is possible to ski down almost to the water’s edge) of Narvik, which is also a legendary rail terminus, and was the site of fierce WWII battles on land and at sea, welcomes Marco Polo today. Take the opportunity, on an optional excursion, to catch the cable car to the heights of Fagernesfjellet mountain for some truly spectacular views. Day 11 Today is spent at sea, enjoying life on board, as Marco Polo steams back across the Arctic Circle, heading south. Day 12 ~ Åndalsnes Cruise into beautiful Romsdalsfjord for the opportunity to enjoy another shore excursion, through some of Norway’s most spectacular scenery. There may be a chance to visit the famous Rødven stave church in its dreamy setting, before Marco Polo cruises on through Romsdalsfjord. Day 13 ~ Bergen A final call is made in Bergen, gateway to the fjords. Join the crowds at the morning fish market on the harbourside, and wander through the narrow cobbled streets of this important Hanseatic city, birthplace of Grieg and royal residence. Don’t miss the ancient Bryggen area, and perhaps take the Fløibanen funicular to the heights above. This evening Marco Polo slips her moorings and heads for home. Day 14 At sea, reliving the memories of a wonderful holiday. Day 15 Marco Polo arrives back in Tilbury at the end of the cruise. Please note: The viewing of the Northern Lights is entirely dependent on weather and atmospheric conditions and whilst very likely, is not guaranteed. 17For cabin information and a deck plan see pages 54-59 Prices per person £ Sterling Sailing from Tilbury MARCOPOLO–SAILINgFROMTILBURY INCREDIBLE CRUISE SALE! To book please call 0843 316 1160 or see the enclosed leaflet24 MARCOPOLO–SAILINgFROMTILBURY Days Nine Ten Marco Polo steams further into the Atlantic, heading for even warmer climes, as you rest and relax on board. Day 11 ~ Mindelo The volcanic isles of the Cape Verde archipelago are fast becoming a popular holiday haven, despite (or perhaps because of) their remote position in the mid-Atlantic. Marco Polo calls at the island of Sao Vicente, with its pretty capital Mindelo. Spend the day exploring this colonial outpost, with its pretty houses, or perhaps take a trip inland. Days 12 to 16 ~ Crossing the Line! Relax and enjoy some more leisurely days at sea as Marco Polo heads further south towards Brazil and equatorial waters. Cross the equator, as excitement mounts with the ship’s imminent arrival in South America. Days 17 to 24 ~ Cruising the Amazon Relax and enjoy the extraordinary journey up – and down – this fabled lazy river, enjoying the comfort of the ship’s air- conditioned lounges and the on-board amenities as Marco Polo makes her stately way towards Manaus, before turning round once more to cruise toward the ocean. Throughout this fascinating journey, there will be opportunities to head ashore by tender to discover a world surrounded by the equatorial forests, perhaps catching glimpses of colourful bird-life in the canopy, and learning about the harsh lives of the Amazonian populace or the startling – by contrast – sophistication of some of the larger settlements. Fast-growing Santarém, the Amazon’s third largest city, lies at the confluence of the Amazon and the Rio Tapajós, and from the city’s waterfront promenade the rivers’ different coloured waters merging is a memorable sight. Head ashore, or take advantage of the optional excursions, which may include a visit to the giant hardwood trees of the region’s fiercely protected primary forests. Highlights of the journey will also include the traditional ‘stilted’ villages of Alter do Chão and Boca da Valeria, with its stalls selling local handicrafts, and a fascinating counter to Marco Polo’s gleaming luxuries. In Manaus, where Marco Polo will moor overnight, in stark contrast to a river-scape of thick vegetation and occasional Indian villages, you’ll discover a city of some 1.7 million inhabitants, the greatest glory of which is the monumental Teatro Amazonas Opera House, built with the riches of the rubber industry. The capital of the delta region of Amapá, Santana for Macapá, lies on the equator, and there’s an opportunity to stand astride the imaginary line at the Zero Line Monument, which lies just a couple of miles from the fortified, Portuguese city. The increasing – and pleasantly reviving – sea breezes of the vast delta hint at the proximity of the Ocean, and soon after leaving Macapa in her wake, Marco Polo heads out into the Atlantic, turning north, leaving you with memories of a wonderful few days that will stay with you forever. Day 25 Another day is spent at sea, enjoying life on board and hopefully sunny skies. Day Four ~ Ålesund You’ll arrive today in the port of Ålesund, with its natural harbours lined by pastel- painted, gabled and turreted buildings, resembling more of a fantasy movie-set rather than a working town. Colourful Art Deco houses are a feature of the main pedestrianised street, Kongens gate, while close by the Sunnmøre Museum is a truly impressive heritage centre, with some sixty timber-framed buildings giving a detailed insight into life in this part of the world through the ages, and a fine collection of ancient and replica boats, from Viking long- ships to kayaks. This evening Marco Polo threads her way through the islands that dot this beautiful coastline. Day Five ~ Svartisen Glacier Another very special day awaits, as Marco Polo heads into magnificent Holandsfjord, just above the Arctic Circle, cruising gently across still waters to the unforgettable sight of the mighty Svartisen Glacier, whose tentacles reach down to just 20 metres above sea level. The sight of the blue-white ice moving imperceptibly down the valley is one of the most arresting of the whole trip. As Marco Polo steams further north, there’s the ever-increasing chance that the night sky might provide a first glimpse of celestial wonders, and that, weather- permitting, the phenomenon that has been witnessed by millions down the ages – actually a bombardment of the earth’s polar atmosphere by electrons carried on ‘solar winds’, and producing fantastical green and bluish displays – might be viewed from late afternoon. Day Six ~ Narvik The friendly port and ski-resort (it is possible to ski down almost to the water’s edge) of Narvik, which is also a legendary rail terminus, and was the site of fierce WWII battles on land and at sea, welcomes Marco Polo today. Take the opportunity, on an optional excursion, to catch the cable car to the heights of Fagernesfjellet mountain for some truly spectacular views.
