They claim acceleration of innovation, but their network-centric architecture is just the opposite.

  • The pace of innovation is rapidly accelerating. Changes in the 21st century come faster and will be driven by convergence, globalization and radically disruptive new technologies. With computer processing power doubling every 18 months or faster, it is feasible to predict that there will be more change in the next 30 years than we saw in the last 100. Coping with this accelerating rate of change and complexity may prove to be the most significant dynamic impacting business success and leadership in the next 100 years. And the question you are asking right now is, “How can ANY organization adapt quickly enough and efficiently and effectively, to thrive within this relentless pace of change?”?”
  • [Pie Source: IDC/Alinean 2006] This pie chart shows a common distribution of an IT organization’s budget. You will notice that the majority of the budget (65%) goes into maintenance and operations and another 25% is spent on upgrades and migration. Only a small fraction (10%) is spent on innovation and new functions, but this is the segment that will enable the business functions do achieve better outcomes. So it is clear that there is a shift required in the budget distribution to move the amount of labor and people resources to more strategic and innovative tasks. But these aren’t the only issues CIOs face. We’ve had a lot of dialogue with customers around their data center issues and pain points. They are expected to improve service levels and make IT more responsive to the needs of the business, and they’re still putting too much money into hardware, software, and especially power and cooling. For example, U.S. data center electricity use has more than doubled since 2000, amounting to about $4.1 billion in electricity costs, and estimated at about 59 billion kilowatt-hours (’06) [source: U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), 2007]. This is more than the electricity consumed by the nation’s color televisions. Similar to the amount of electricity used by the entire U.S. transportation manufacturing industry. And the amount used by over 5,000,000 U.S. households. In the discussions I have with CIOs, power & Cooling is one of the top 3 priorities. And there is two main reasons for that: Power availability – more and more the availability of additional power is becoming an issue. For example, just recently I spoke to a CIO of a large financial institution in London (UK) and they were trying to expand their datacenter in the center of London. They required additional electricity and so requested adding a power substation in close proximity. The electricity company told them no. So they have to look for alternatives to grow their datacenter without increasing the total energy supply. Cost of Power – in the last 3 years we could see how the cost of power went onto an exponential curve. Today the industry analysts have calculated that the average cost of energy (power and cooling) a server requires to operate for two years is about the same as the purchase price of the server. The predictions are that this ration is going to change to a 1:1 ratio in the next 2 years which means the purchase price of the server will be the same as the cost of energy it consumes within one year. To address all the various challenges, data centers need to make fundamental changes. They need to break down the silos, automate error prone manual processes and tighten management control. They need to bring together hardware, software and services to create next-generation data centers that operate more efficiently.
