    • Wired connections (10-Base T) are great if !
      • Installation can be costly $40-$120 per outlet
      • Jacks and cables are ugly
      • You are tied down to the jack
  5. Advantages of Wireless LAN (WLAN)
    • Freedom of movement
    • Can cost less
    • Installation time reduced
  6. 802.11 WLAN Protocols a / b / g
    • Protocol is states how the device communicate
      • Manufactures device can talk to each other
    • 802.11a uses diff. frequency from 802.11b/g
      • Used when interference is an issue
    • 802.11b is slower then 802.11g
        • 11MBs 54MBs
  7. What adapter to use? 802.11 a / b / g
    • 802.11g adapters are the best bang for the buck
      • Most also 802.11b compatible
      • Less expensive then 802.11a
      • Great for transferring large files or streaming video
    • 802.11b Most compatible and very cheap
      • Great when you only need to surf and check email
    • 802.11a
      • Use when area is saturated with other wireless networks or you have unexplained low throughput on all channels (interference from other wireless devices)
    • Minimum Requirement $0-$70
      • Wireless LAN adapter or device with pre-existing WLAN
      • Permission to access existing network like SIU
    Equipment Costs
  8. Equipment Costs
    • Max Requirement (New Broadband) $120-$300
      • Router w/switch
      • 802.11 Access Point
      • Wireless adapters
  9. All-in-One Cable Solution Service through your cable television company
  10. Digital Subscriber Line (DSL)All-in-1 Service through your Telephone company
    • D-Link DSL-G604T DSL modem
      • - 54 MBps = 802.11g
      • - 100 BASE TX = 10BaseT/RJ45 wired
      • - Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, IEEE 802.11g = wireless
      • - VPN, NAT, Firewall Protection, SPI Firewall, WEP: 128 = Protection methods between your computers and the internet
  11. PCMCIA Adapters
    • Laptops w/o USB 2.0 ports
      • Or port is being used for mouse
    • Some may have port for external antenna
      • Can extended range for special circumstances
  12. USB Adapters
    • Simple to install
    • Easy to remove and go when traveling
    • Powered by the host computer
  13. Gaming Adapters
    • You have to program it prior to use in some cases
    • Can be used on any system that has a Network Interface Card (NIC) installed
    • Needs external 110VAC power source
  14. PCI Cards
    • For Desktops computers
      • No available USB 2.0 ports
      • Normally have better antenna = better range/speed
  15. Installation of a All-in-One Cable Modem/Router/Switch/Access Point
    • Location
    • Needs to be close to cable TV outlet
    • Best in room with the most computers
        • Run RJ-45 LAN cable to the close machines
        • Leave the wireless connections for less used or distant devices
  16. Installation of a All-in-One
    • Needs accessories
      • 75ohm coax jumper from wall to modem
      • Splitter if you want to use the connection for T.V. (This can reduce the signal quality)
      • LAN cables for each machine
      • Each machine should have a LAN port
      • Manuals for the devices to be configured!!!!
  17. Configure first machine communicate with All-in-One
    • Go to Control Panel and open Network Connections
    • Dbl click Local Area Connection

    1
  35. Security
    • Wireless Encryption Protocol (WEP)
      • Use 128bit to make it as hard as possible
      • Use a pass phrase that can’t be easily guessed or create one using random characters
  36. Security
    • Wireless Encryption Protocol (WEP)
      • 128 key uses 26 characters
      • Each device must use the same key
      • Change the key on occasion
  37. Security 1 2 3 4 5
