The street goes smart
Smart Streetlights, a new sub aspect of smart city illuminates the streets with smart network
of connected LED lights. Operations of this network would be through a centrally located
intelligent system. Probably this could be called as a hybrid initiative as it makes use of
various other technologies of which GIS would be a major one. As the medium for
communication, RF (Radio Frequency) solutions will be deployed.
The benefits of an interconnected network of smart streetlights ranges from monitoring traffic
and weather, providing real-time video, audio and Wi-Fi, broadcasting city announcements or
advertisements, directing event parking or illuminating evacuation routes in an emergency. It
is apparent that in order to accomplish these functionalities, a location based intelligent
system has to be integrated with the network.
According to the latest research report, in the U.S., cities such as Houston, Los Angeles and
Chattanooga, Tenn., are lighting the way forward. Chattanooga has been using smart
streetlights to curb gang violence and enhance public safety.
It is expected that this initiative will grow rapidly, with network controlled nodes set to rise
from 2 million today to 40 million by 2019 (Worldwide).
In another perspective, the smart streetlights initiative serves as a set off for the
municipalities who are looking forward to make their city smart.
