Slide 1: Inquiry Learning Nelson Central School - our journey so far

Slide 2: What is Inquiry Learning? o Student-centred o Worthy problem, question, idea, conflict or issue o Thinking and research skills o Authentic context

Slide 3: Why the need to change ? o Knowledge changing. o Need to be able to locate and use it.

Slide 4: o Successful life-long learners need to develop research skills and to develop and utilise higher order thinking skills through carefully scaffolded learning opportunities.

Slide 5: Many models of Inquiry… o Trevor Bond’s model - SAUCE model. (Other schools in our area are working with the SAUCE model.)

Slide 7: The SAUCE model… S - Setting the scene …It provides a context for the learning, and involves initial interaction with the task and identification of prior knowledge.

Slide 8: A - Acquire … Acquiring information (& validating it).

Slide 9: U – Use … Application of the knowledge in the context of the task.

Slide 10: C – Communicate … Presentation of the result

Slide 11: E – Evaluate … Evaluation of process.

Slide 12: Tasks o Task writing crucial. o Key words & phrases embedded in task. o Task requires application of the information.

Slide 15: Questioning o Questioning Rubric. o 7 levels of questioning. o Need to promote effective questions that will provide useful answers

Slide 16: Ineffective Questioners… o Ask non-relevant questions which do not contain contextual key words or phrases ( E.g. who did it?) o Write statements rather than questions .

Slide 17: Effective questioners… o Identify information needed o Write a range of relevant questions o Can use the questions with a variety of appropriate sources (– Google, encyclopaedia, people) o Edit/adapt questions o Persevere until they have the information they need.
