After her departure, she found her way to Rice University in Houston, TX, to study political science; her favorite course, Bombs and Rockets, involved modeling the outcomes of various arms reduction plans in the event of a conflict. Missing quality basketball, she returned home to study medicine at Duke in 1996, and decided along the way to become an orthopaedic surgeon, in part because of their reputation in the medical world as knuckle-dragging cavemen. (She has always liked a challenge.) Perhaps because of this unusual choice, she was given the Merck Award and American Medical Women's Association Award, and elected to Alpha Omega Alpha, the medical honor society. Her residency training was at the University of Michigan, where she finally learned to enjoy football and was for unclear reasons entrusted with the role of Administrative Chief Resident. After five years of frostbite, she beat a hasty retreat to the beauty of San Diego, CA for a pediatric orthopaedic surgery and scoliosis fellowship with Children's Hospital of San Diego and UCSD. Though the lures of California were many, she made her way back home to Duke to establish her academic medical practice, treating children and adolescents and shaping as many young minds as she could along the way. She is currently hard at work espousing the evils of monkey bars and trampolines and battling the status quo.
