IPMPlus follows a fine-grained, application sensing approach by which power management is done based on the specific needs of the application/software running on the hardware at any point in time. This makes the power management approach highly adaptive and scalable to a large variety of usage scenarios. By intelligently managing power in components, IPMPlus helps save energy even when computers are in active use.

Let us say we watch a Full Screen Video on a Laptop/Computer. Traditionally in the time based approach no savings can be done. IPMPlus looks at the situation in a different manner. Most standard computer today has a CPU and a GPU (Graphics Processor Unit). Video playing actually requires a lot of GPU power but very little CPU power. Accordingly IPMPlus minimizes the CPU power and keeps the GPU and the screen on full throttle. Result great user experience with around 20% savings in most cases. A 120 mins backup laptop may last for 140-150 minutes.
 
Let us take another example. We are showing a PPT. Typically we cannot put the laptop on a power saving mode due to the risk of screen going blank or machine in sleep/hibernation. IPMPlus intelligently recognizes this. It keeps the monitor ON while lowers down the power of other components like CPU and HDD. Result is around 50% savings and in Laptops a 120 minutes giving Laptop may last for 250 minutes or so.

Yet another interesting scenario. All of us frequently put the download on and for larger ones we prefer the nights. It is a catch 22. If I activate the power saving mode, it blindly puts the machine on sleep/hibernation after some time. If I don’t’ then it keeps on sometimes for the whole night. Wastage of power and reduction of asset life. Here once again IPMPlus intelligently handles the situation. It recognizes the need to keep the machine on for the internet download. At the same time it also recognizes that this hardly requires much power and accordingly shuts off the monitor, puts the CPU in lower power and so on. Not only this once the download is completed it also silently puts it to hibernation.

  • Traditional power schemes operate at a macro level and are based on time-based interventions. (E.g. Standby system after 5 minutes). This makes it difficult to administer as different users will have different priorities. Only gross level savings can be achieved by this approach.

    The approach is based on user intervention (in most cases K/B , Mouse usage) being considered as the Active. None of the other activity is considered as Active. Thus if you are watching a Video and your computer is configured for Power Saving in traditional way, you are in for trouble. The screen goes black time and again and has to move mouse / Kb to get the screen active again.

    If you have left the machine for download from Internet and moved out, you may see computers sent to sleep/hibernate even if the download in not completed.

    Such intrusion into the user experience drives people away from setting up the machine for power savings.

  • IPM+ reduces the power consumption per PC by up to 42% in most environment. On an average PC of today’s generation with LCD monitors the consumption is around 150 Watts. Lower- end / Latest Power optimized machines may consume around 80 Watts while Higher End Machines may go up to 250 Watts. Workstations consume around 400-500 Watts and Server to the tune of 750-2000 watts based on configuration. For Simplicity we have considered power consumption per PC just @ 125 Watts.

  • If we add a 1000 Watt Heater in an Air Conditioned room it will require 600-1200 Watt of extra energy on AC to nullify its effect and maintain the temperature. In monetary terms for every Rs 1000 spent on heat generation, it costs Rs. 600 to 1200/- to cool it off depending upon the efficiency of the cooling unit.
     
    The Extra Energy consumed by computer is converted into heat energy. Typically the power required would be around 60% of the energy saved on PCs
  • UPS Battery :
     
    Typically UPS (2 Hrs B/Up) Battery Cost / KVA is INR 20,000/- , runs 4 computers and gets replaced every 3 Years. Battery Cost / PC / Year becomes INR 1666/-

    With IPM plus it can run 6 Computers. Thus, Battery Cost/PC/ Year becomes : approx INR 1111/-

    Battery Cost Saving Per PC / Year = 555/- 
     
    LAPTOPS : With up to 50% higher backup time the Battery Life and Battery Life Span both increases by 35% plus.

    Normally Battery Costs INR 4000/- and lasts for 2 Years , i.e. INR 2000/ Yr

    With IPM+ it shall last for 3 Years, i.e INR 1333/ Yr .
