  2. 2. If even one person in a schoolknows him well enough to care, astudents chances of success go updramatically. In small groups thatcan focus on a range ofsubjects, teachers and students areforming new bonds and setting newstandards for a personal education.

What is Middle School Advisory? “Broadly defined, advisory programs are configurations in which an adult advisor meets regularly during the school day with a group of students to provide academic and social- emotional mentorship and support, to create personalization within the school, and to facilitate a small peer community of learners” (Cushman, 1990; Galassi et al., 2004; Galassi et al., 1997; Juvonen et al., 2004; National Association of Secondary School Principals, 2006; Stevenson, 1998).

What’s Has Advisory Done for the Students of Rockingham Middle School?At Rockingham Middle School, advisoryhas been the primary vehicle for creatinga more personalized learningenvironment where all students are wellknown by at least oneadult. Moreover, advisory has providedRockingham Middle School a structureand a set of practices for monitoring andsupporting students’ academic progressand college and career readiness as theyprepare for their high school career.

  8. 8. IN CONCLUSIONThrough the Schools to WatchInitiative, Rockingham Middle School is strivingfor EXCELLENCE. The implementation of theAdvisory Program (BLAST) has academicallychallenged our students and ensured that ourschool is developmentally responsive andsensitive to the unique developmentalchallenges of early adolescence. RockinghamMiddle School continues to be sociallyequitable, democratic and fair; providing everystudent with high-qualityteachers, resources, and supports.
