Masquerade Ball Corporate Sponsorships W ear Community Colleague: ADNG (Abu Dhabi Networking Group) is honored to organize the first annual Masquerade Ball benefiting Ethiopiaid, (www.uae.ethiopiaid.com). ADNG was formed in June 2008 to provide a forum for senior professional managers to maximize their awareness of and participation in business activities of the United Arab Emirates. Membership has soared to nearly 1,100 members through word of mouth and information available on the LinkedIn social networking site. Members enjoy a monthly “no-pressure” social meeting with other professionals sharing common interests, challenges and opportunities. A monthly keynote speaker provides highlights of high profile projects and topics of interest to business managers from local Emirati and foreign business leaders. The Ball will be held on October 23, 2009 at the Hiltonia Beach Garden with attendance limited to 1200. Tickets are 700 Dirhams ($200USD) each. All funds raised in excess of the actual cost of the Ball (food, drink and absolute neces- sities) will be donated to Ethiopiaid. We are asking service providers to donate their services, with some strategic ex- ceptions. A silent auction will be held including items donated by our generous sponsors to raise additional monies for Ethiopiaid. Our target goal is 1 million Dirhams. Attendees are likely to attend in costume disguise to enjoy the masquerade festivities but there will be no disguising the fact that they are providing very real and needed assistance to the people of Ethiopia. Considered the cradle of humanity, Ethiopia is one of the world’s oldest civilizations and Africa’s second most popu- lous nation, with over 80 million inhabitants. Unfortunately, Ethiopians suffer greatly from various poverties, including poor healthcare, hunger, and a lack of housing and educational opportunities. Ethiopiaid was founded in 1989 by Professor Sir Alec Reed (Chairman of the Reed Recruitment Family of Compa- nies). While visiting Ethiopia in the late 1980's he was genuinely moved by the suffering he witnessed and helped es- tablish Ethiopiaid to give people globally an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of Ethiopians. Ethiopiaid avoids the usual top-down approach of many international aid organizations. Rather than establishing pro- grams in this ancient nation, it established relationships with local partners who have programs and projects helping their fellow Ethiopians. These local partners know what is needed far better than outside organizations. Ethiopiaid supplies financial, material and human resources to their partners. Ethiopiaid has donated over $30 million (110 mil- lion DHS) to partner projects in Ethiopia. Currently it is working with 20 dedicated partner projects that need approxi- mately $3 million (USD) for operational funding each year. ADNG is honored to assist in raising funds for these Ethiopia partners in true UAE and Muslim tradition. Bilal, one of the Profit Mohammed companions and the first Muezzin to call the faithful to prayer, was Ethiopian. Ethiopia also provided refuge for companions of the Prophet from Meccan persecution. Today, the Abu Dhabi community can re- pay that ancient kindness by extending a helping hand to the people of Ethiopia. Ethiopiaid efforts in the UAE are led by Maria Brown, ADNG’s Director of Business Networking, who directs Ethio- piaid Middle East. In July 2009 a silent auction raised 42,000 Dirhams for Ethiopiaid. Maria will be leading a team of volunteers going to Ethiopia in November to teach English as part of Reed’s Ethiopia team challenge and is planning a February 2010 return trip to continue this work. Now, in partnership with Abu Dhabi’s premier professional network- ing web community, ADNG, the bar has been raised and ADNG's membership are engaged to help with this new fund- raising effort with this Masquerade ball.
