Surf smart, be web savvy!

Personal Information is Private
Never give out personal or identifying information such as name, address, school name, birth date or phone number in any public message such as a chat room or on a bulletin board.
Never post pictures of yourself without checking with your parent or guardian first.
Make sure that you are dealing with someone you and your parents/guardian know and trust before sharing personal information via email.
Do not put personal information or interests in your Instant Messaging profile. This includes posting your picture too. It can be copied from the computer and saved by anyone.
Remember, just because someone asks for information about you doesn’t mean that you have to tell them anything about yourself!

Passwords Protect
Don’t share your passwords with anyone but your parents or guardian, including even your best friend.
No one should ever ask you for your password including anyone online.
When you use a public computer make sure that you log out of all the accounts you have accessed before logging off.

Cyber Bullying is not Okay
Don’t send mean or insulting messages to anyone.
If a person writes something that is mean or makes you feel uncomfortable, don’t respond. Log off and tell a trusted adult.
When in doubt, ask for help. Log off if you are not sure about a message you’ve received and talk about it with someone first.
Remember that nothing you write on the internet is completely private, including email, so be careful and think about what you type and who you tell.

Scams, Ads and Other Spam
Be careful when being offered something for nothing, such as gifts, money or prizes especially when the offer involves coming to a meeting or a visit to your house.
Some ads may try to trick you by offering free things as a way of collecting your personal information.
Don’t buy anything online without your parent’s or guardian’s permission first.
Never open an attachment from someone you don’t know. It could contain a harmful virus
Downloading software can also put your computer at risk.
Remind your parents to protect your computer by installing anti-virus software.

Online Friends
Meeting people on the internet can be great. Unfortunately, not everyone is as cute, funny or as nice as they may sound online. People that you meet online may not be who they seem. For example, a 12-year-old girl named Melody could actually be an older adult.
Remember that not everything you read online is true.
Do not agree to meet an online friend without your parent’s permission.
If you do meet someone you met online, make sure that your parent or guardian is with you and that you are meeting in a public place.

Research
The internet can be a great resource for school projects but look closely at the source. Just about anybody can create a web page.
Use the C.R.A.P. test to determine if your source is credible or not. (Currency, Reliability, Authority, Purpose/Point-of-View).
Talk to your librarian, teacher or parent about safe and accurate websites for research.
Your public library has lots of resources.
If you use online information for a school project make sure that you explain where you got the information by citing your source.
If you use images or video from the internet make sure that you are following creative commons licensing agreements.
