  • Introduction to Cloud  What is actually cloud ?  Anything loosely coupled, changeable in terms of size  Internet Networks etc.  The what about Cloud Computing ?  Loosely coupled computers (servers) provisioned as a service with a pay as go model.  How did the Cloud gain so much importance in the recent times?  Idea about the resources as a service is paper which was way back in 1960s  Reason for sudden pick up is because of the last mile connectivity
  • Cloud is an Evolution and not a revolution  Same Internet  Same Protocols and industry standard  It is the same OS / Server  Same Client  It is the similar programming language / model / paradigm  Use the same SDK as earlier for existing applications
  • About the University
  • General Situation – No Problem  • Students Using University Site • Less Activity • Low traffic • Small level of concurrency • University website, blazing fast
  • During Results – Big Problem  • High Traffic • High Concurrency • Slow website response • Actually errors
  • What we expect ? What we actually see !
  • Back in the University IT Department  The results scenario, was stressful not just for students but also for IT department  Chancellor, Top level management, strict instructions not go to out of server capacity of the next time  Funds Management  Finance Department  IT Department
  • Outcomes  Buy Hardware / Server  Increase Capacity  Deploy Servers
  • Is Problem Solved or Started ?  More Server means More Overhead  Servers require not just Hardware and Software - But also Electricity, Network & Cooling
  • Inside the IT department  More Server, more Administrators
  • How about the Server  Higher Server Resource, low usage Big Server, Low Traffic
  • Costing  Capital Expenditure  Operational Overhead  Additional Infrastructure Additional ???

  • What to Do ? WELCOME TO CLOUD
  • What you don’t want … ?  I need 10 server for 10 days  I want peace of mind  I don’t want to manage, run, monitor the server  I don’t want to buy  I don’t have space in my premises to run the server  I don’t have the approval for the extra resources  I don’t want to buy additional licenses or software packages  I don’t want to see and worry about my server uptime results while students get their results
  • More About Cloud  Cloud is the single word answer for all the above mentioned  Determine exactly; the resources you want and provision only that much  You can exactly do, when more traffic, more servers; when less traffic, less servers  You pay per hour (In Azure it is per minutes) for the resources used  After when you don’t want servers, you can release them or remove them
  • About Scaling  Scaling Schemes – Auto, Manual, Semi Automatic  Scale Out vs. Scale Up

  • The new Buzz words  Pay as you Go  Similar to Post Paid Plan  Don’t buy or pay anything up front  Elasticity  Art of architecting the application to upsize or downsize based on the requirement or demand either automatically or semi- automatically  On Demand Capacity  Need 10 additional database for next 3 hours, no problem
  • The new Buzz words  IaaS  Infrastructure As A Service  Get access to the cloud provisioning at Infra level or raw Virtual Machine level  PaaS  Platform As A Service  Get access to the cloud provisioning at platform / runtime level  SaaS  Software As A Service  Get Access to cloud provisioning at Application / software level
