7. 7. The Kashyap Parivar

1. Narain and Laxmi live in Salem. Narain is the first generation owner of a stainless steel factory. He is now retired from active executive capacity in the business. Theirs is a wealthy family. However, they embrace a very traditional bordering on conservative way of life. They live as a joint family in a palatial house.

2. Narain and Laxmi have two sons – Ram and Krishna, both jointly lead the family business.

3. Ram is married to Sita and has two children Sunita and Hiten

Sunita is married to Manoj belonging to a wealthy family in Tirupur. She has a son Ruchir who is 18 years. Sunita is recently widowed and continues to live with her in-laws in Tirupur. Sunita will inherit some shares in the family business, but has no executive role in the company.

Hiten is married to Suhana (born in a wealthy yet conservative family from Salem) and has a daughter Neha who is 13 years. Hiten lives in Salem and works with his father and uncle in the family business.

4. Krishna is married to Radha and has two children Vishal and Vikram

Vishal is married to Neena (born in an open-minded and a liberal family from Delhi) and has a son Rohan who is 11 years. Vishal moved to Delhi 3 years back to run a hotel business that the family has acquired recently.

Vikram is unmarried and is currently pursuing MBA in the London School. The family wants him to join Hiten in the Salem factory.

 8. 8. The Challenges (8)

As a team, present your responses for each of the following challenges.

 9. 9.

Vikram is not interested in the family business. He wants to pursue a career in Business Management and settle in London and he expresses this interest to the family. Although the elders’ initial reaction is to persuade him into coming back to Salem, they are also confused and find it difficult to take a final decision. What should the elders do?

 10. 10.

Hiten, who is close to 40 now and has worked in the family business for almost 20 years, feels choked and controlled working closely under the elders. He feels that his ideas go unheard, and he is having to prove himself continuously. Hiten has escalated his frusterations to his father and his uncle. How do you think the elders need to address Hiten’s concerns?

 11. 11.

Neena has a lot of time in hand, and wants to start an Interior Designing business and has discussed this interest with Vishal. Vishal is torn between the fear of family’s disapproval of working women and his love for his wife. What should he do?

 12. 12.

Neena, living in Delhi, enjoys a lot of independence in running her family and enjoying her life. But Suhana, living with her in-laws, is forced to adhere to strict orthodox regime. Suhana finds this unfair and builds up a lot of frustration leading to resentment between the co-sisters. What intervention should the family make in order to improve relationship between the co-sisters?

 13. 13.

Radha finds Neena’s continuous insistence in pursuing a career disrespectful against family’s values. She feels that the long distance separating them and the urban environment Neena is exposed to as the reasons for the same. So she is urging Krishna to bring them back to Salem before it is too late. Although Krishna understands Radha’s sentiments, he also knows that for business reasons, it is important for Vishal to be in Delhi. What should he do?

 14. 14.

Neha and Rohan, although grand children of the same family, are given different levels of freedom. For example, despite being younger Rohan is sent on annual summer camps to Shimla for the past three years, whereas Neha by virtue of being a girl is never given permission for the same. This causes a lot of sibling rivalry. What should the family do?

 15. 15.

Vishal finds it frustrating that he has to send monthly accounts of all his personal expenses in Delhi, including petty expenses, to the family in Salem for scrutiny. How do you think Vishal should handle this?

 16. 16.

Sunita, recently widowed, has requested her father Ram to take Ruchir under his wings and train him in the family business. Krishna feels threatened for the sake of his grand children’s future in the business. In what manner should Ram induct Ruchir in the business so that it does not cause any disruptions in his relationship with his brother’s family unit and also remove any emotional threats/ insecurities from their minds?
