RESEARCHINGTHE BRIEFBY: NATHAN YUNG
GENRE OF MUSICDifferent genre‟s of music require different kinds of images toportray/ advertise the thing you want to present.Genres: R&B, Hip Hop, Techno, Disco, Classical, Reggae,Rock, Canto Pop, Country, Folk (any country), Girl/Boy Band,Heavy Metal, Pop, Rap
HEAVY METALDISCOGRAPHYHeavy Metal (grungy images, possibly satanic images?)
HIP-HOPHip-Hop (Bling, baggy clothing, dark contrast)
CLASSICALClassical: Dreamy landscapes, generic fonts, picture of theartist himself/herself.
I DECIDED TO DO POPThere is not really a specific form of album art work, as popis a wide genre.
MY POP MUSICMOODBOARD
MY OBJECTIVESAim 1: Create a album cover that portrays the “Modern POP” genreObjectives:Use a band name generator to save time Have a simplistic backgroundMatch the band name and the album nameTo use Adobe Photoshop to manipulate the image in a way that is a appropriate to the genre ofmusic I choose, e.g.. popAim 2: To use a variety of tools in my final picture (e.g.. Liquefy tool)Objectives:Use tools like the liquify toolUse blurring effectively to make my image more realisticUse the lasso toolUse external images to help create my final piece.Aim 3: Do research into typography.Aim 4: To develop and gain new knowledge in terms of theory with Photoshop. This includesthe theory of why certain tools do “specific” thingsObjectives:Read professional photo editors blogs as to what makes an image effectiveTo not just randomly add an effect for no reason. To watch various tutorials to expand my knowledge of Photoshop
TOP 3 EFFECTS IWANT TO DO• Dusky Lighting Effects• Mental Wave Explosion Effect• Silhouette Effect
STEP 1 (DUSKYLIGHTING EFFECT)Download a Free Porcelain and Vector font template from“Arsenal‟s Freebies Section”Also download a high quality photo of your choice
STEP 2First, we duplicate the photo, press Ctrl-Shift-U to de-saturatethe image to Black and White. Then go to Image >Adjustments > Brightness/Contrast and make the image a bitbrighter and increase the contrast as shown.
STEP 3Then go to Filter, then blur, then choose Gaussian blur andapply a blur of 2 pixelsSTEP 4Now we set the blurred black and white layer to blendingmode Overlay and Opacity 50%.STEP 5Now to make the sun rays, we are going to use glowingedges. So duplicate the original colored layer and put it ontop of all the other layers. Then go to Filter > Stylize >Glowing Edges and use settings of 1, 11, and 15 for Width,Brightness, and Smoothness.
STEP 6 Now we go to Filter > Blur > Radial Blur and apply settings asshown. This is to make the sun light effect less generic. Make surethat you have set the blur method to Zoom. Also importantly movethe Blur Center until it‟s roughly in the position of the image wherethe “person or object” is understanding, for example: where the„sun‟ is going to be.Once you‟ve got it, apply the Radial Blur again by pressing Ctrl+F(to repeat the last filter used).

FINAL PRODUCTI decided to use what I had learntthroughout this project to create a albumcover that reflected the genre of pop. I wasinspired to do this through a Pink Floydalbum cover, as this reflected modern daydiscography.
INTRODUCTIONZombies range from very gory to a few scratches on the face,I wanted to create a zombie effect that portrayed depressionand horror for my final picture. These are the steps I took toachieve this.
MY FINAL PIECE
FIRST: DUPLICATEYOUR IMAGE
WHY I DID THIS?This was to create a backgroundwhich acted like a layer whichwould show the contrast withinthe following layer which wouldbe created. Without this thefollowing layer would be to darkto create a zombie like effect.
CREATE A NEW LAYERAND CHOOSE A GRAYISHCOLOR
COLOR IN THE SKIN
DOUBLE CLICK LAYER; THENCHOOSE BLEND MODE AND CHOOSEHUE THEN CHANGE THE OPACITYTO AROUND 60% TO 70%
WHY DO THIS?This is to create the desiredeffect of a dead decaying typeskin. This is more effectivethen painting the face of theimage as it gives morecoverage and is more realistic.
MERGE THE SKIN COLOR ANDIMAGE TOGETHER. USE THE “BURNTOOL” AND BURN AROUND THEEYES LIPOS, CHEEKS AND NOSE.
EFFECT THIS CREATES:(ZOMBIE LIKEFEATURES)
CREATE A NEW LAYER AND SELECTTHE SAME COLOR THAT YOU DIDFOR THE SKIN AND COLOR IN THEEYES
AND GAUSSIAN BLUR,CHANGE IT TO AROUND5 PIXELS. This will be blend all the colors together, to give it a more natural look.
THEN USE THE ERASERTOOL AND OUTLINE THEEYES
TO CREATE ABLOODSHOTEYE EFFECT.USE THE PAINTTOOL ANDLIGHTLYSHADE UNDERTHE EYES.
BLENDING:CHOOSEHARD LIGHTOR OVERLAY
FURTHER BLENDING:USE THE GAUSSIANBLUR AGAIN
THEN MERGE THE BLOOD, EYE ANDIMAGE TOGETHER TO ADD ON OTHEREFFECTS AS A WHOLE IMAGE
ONCE MERGED… USETHE BURN TOOL TODARKEN THE EYES
NOW TO ADD ON SOMETEXTURES TO THEFACE…This is to give the effect of a rippedup face. This is a feature moststereotypical zombies have.To do this we will use anotherimage off the internet to give thiseffect.
I USED THIS TEXTUREAS IT WAS OVERALLQUITE MESSY
DESIRED PART OF THEIMAGE AND PASTED ONMY “ZOMBIE” IMAGE
HOWEVER THIS JUST LOOKEDFAKE, THUS I DECIDED TO BLEND ITIN USING THE “OVERLAY” FEATURE.
TO ENHANCE THE PICTURE, I USEDTHE BURN FEATURE TO DARKENCUTS AT SPECIFIC POINTS SUCH ASTHE SIDE OF THE MOUTH ANDCHEEK BONES TO MAKE IT LOOKMORE EFFECTIVE AND ENHANCED.
IN TERMS OF THE PICTURE I AM DONE.HOWEVER I WOULD HAVE TO REFLECTTHE PICTURE WITH THE TEXT OF MYIMAGE, THUS I CHOSE TO USE GOTHICTEXTS AND “DARK” COLORS SUCH ASBLACK AND RED. I DID NOT ADD ABACKGROUND AS I BELIEVED THE WHITEWAS A BETTER FIT FOR THE IMAGE, AS IBELIEVE A SIMPLER IMAGE IS MOREEFFECTIVE AND I ALSO THOUGHT THATTHE CONTRAST BETWEEN THE IMAGEAND THE BACKGROUND REFLECTED MYMODERN DARK POP DISCOGRAPHYBETTER THAN A VIVID BACKGROUND.
I THEN ADDED MY BAND NAME“IRIDESCENT” AND MY ALBUMNAME “THE END” IN GOTHIC TEXTTO FIT THE IMAGE.
I ENLARGED THE TEXT ANDOUTLINED THE TEXTS TO MAKE ITSHARPER TO THE EYE. I ALSOTRIED TO WARP THE TEXTS,HOWEVER IT DID NOT SUIT MYALBUM SO I DECIDED TO JUSTOUTLINE THE TEXTS ADD SOMESHADING AND USE GOTHIC FONTS.
WHAT I LEARNTOver the course of this project I have learnt how to basicallyuse Photoshop. Furthermore using my aims and objectives Ihave effectively developed the skill of using brushes, different layers, and blurring to enhance my photos. Myexample of this is while I made my first “tester photo”, Ilearnt how to create my own brush. I then used differenttypes of layering to give the illusion of something else.Throughout that photo, I used different blurring techniquesto make my image more realistic. Also, I learnt and tried out a lot of new things on Photoshopwhile I was watching tutorials to help with my final product.
TESTINGI surveyed a few people who enjoy and purchase Pop Musicregularly. The questions I asked them were:1. What features do you find aesthetically pleasing to see on a Pop album cover?2. What colours are more appropriate for a modern pop album cover?3. Should the album cover be simple or complicated?
TESTING RESULTSIn the results of my surveys. I learnt that not everyone agreedwith the classic happy pop album cover. Many believed thatmodern pop album covers, often depicted grief and sadness. Thus I decided to do a more modern version of everyone‟sopinion. With the theme of grief set in my mind. I decided touse gothic colors and a apocalyptic theme. Such as a Zombietheme. The colours I mainly used were dark as it reflectedpeoples opinions of a “modern pop” album cover.
WHAT I THOUGHT OFPHOTOSHOP!I think Photoshop is a relatively easy program to use as longas there is practice involved. In my opinion the only way toexpand on Photoshop techniques is trial and error. Before you can create Photoshop masterworks, you need tolearn the basics. Even the most complex digital artworks arebuilt on a foundation of simple actions.Even though Photoshop was quite time consuming for me. Ihave learnt that it is a very effective tool for me to presentdifferent pieces of work in a new type of format. Due to thiscourse, I have further developed my IT skills. Therefore I amable to now use Photoshop to portray new pieces of work.
WHAT I LIKEDI really like the different textures used in myfinal piece, as it seems more realistic thanjust using the “burn tool” and making theface darker. I think the blurring combinedwith an external image for my final piecemakes it a lot more sharp.
HOW I CAN DOBETTERFor my final piece I have realized how important detail is. Inmy piece I have many flaws, however I have realized thatthese can be easily corrected by attention to detail. Inparticular I think next time I could take it easy on the burntool as parts on my face in the picture look much to dark.Furthermore a higher resolution image will make my piecestand out more and look better. Thus if I were to do thisagain. I would have taken a higher quality image.
HAVE I COMPLETED MYAIMS?I have completed most of my aims:Completed:
WHY I DIDNT’T COMPLETEAIM 3Being caught up with image editing. I forgot to researchtypography. Thus I could not create an effective type of textwhich was unique and aesthetically pleasing. This shows that I must pay attention to every aspect of aims. However using my aims I have been able to understand thateven the most complex photos are based off a simplefoundation!
