Library method. Various books, journals, local and foreign thesis were researched during the development of this software as it provided a valuable tool in the development process. Theoretical and practical information’s from several journals, publications and other online sources from the Internet were involved to gather the required data. Local literature in software development helped the researchers in better understanding the needs of developing such a website that could cater to the local market as well as the international market.
Since the website is developed for a company in Bahrain, local expertise in this area was much needed, in order to give a broader range to the website capabilities and functions. The company targets local clients / suppliers and international clients/suppliers, providing world renowned jewellery and in order to achieve these goals, the website should be able to meet the requirements of both sides of the region.
In any website development, having the required tools is the utmost necessity, and through the various books, publications and articles helped in providing the researchers with robust and dynamic software development tools to achieve these goals.

Summarization Via Online Writing - Presentation Transcript

  1. The Effect of Online Environments on the Characteristics of Student Writing Sean P.Na! *
  2. our context:
  3. an authentic and WIDE audience:
  4. an authentic and WIDE audience:
  5. ‘twas the night before a due date...
  6. How do online environments impact the characteristics of student writing and subsequent achievement?
  7. ...as measured by summative unit exam scores, readability, and word count.
  8. methods:
  9. • summary assigned at culmination of unit- prior to exam • student lineup by age- counted off by twos- split into two groups of ten • laid out comprehensive summary assignment: use all concepts, cite at least once source.
  10. • differentiated assignment for each group: • group 1- use MS Word, e-mail product directly to me • group 2- add directly to blog on class network at: http:// mwsu-bio101.ning.com
  11. • copy/paste each summary into MS Word to analyze word count & reliability • score exams • analyze all data in class with students • students & teacher reflect on the project in network discussion thread
  12. results:
  13. (Table 1) Students who constructed comprehensive summary of nutrition unit via online blog post for a wide and potentially global audience (even group):
  14. (Table 2) Students who constructed comprehensive summary of nutrition unit via MS Word document handed in directly to teacher (odd group):
  15. a closer look... traditional online average exam score: 43.2 43.4 readability: 9.1 8.2 word count: 638 399
  16. why?
  17. a typical “traditional report” count: 566 score: 50
  18. a typical, “blog post”, or “post” count: 399 score: 51
  19. *in contrast to the blog... here we see a “discussion thread”
  20. “It appeared that the papers had a higher readability and word count, which I kind of expected because I think people tend to write more formally on papers, whereas the blog posts tend to be more opinion and informal writing.” ~RH
  21. this: d lize orum uti n f s rk i cussio n etwo dis t h is r the y fo la r g el
  22. vs. this: s to k tend os ts twor blog p i s ne mal e th e for wh il mor uti lize
  23. conclusions:
  24. •writing a comprehensive summary seems to be an effective pre-exam strategy, regardless of format •the nature of the summary seemed to do little to affect overall scores in this study •students writing online submitted significantly more concise summaries with smaller word counts
  25. my inference: Online writing is a potentially powerful tool for summarization of complex content.
  26. end. *thanks to DeclanTM on Flickr for keyboard image in title slide
