Verbs Study Guide - Presentation Transcript

    1. This is a presentation of the topics that you are going to view in your exam. Study guide
    2. verbs
      • What is a verb?
        • A verb expresses ACTION!
        • It also expresses a state of BEING (verb to be: IS ,ARE)
        • It tells you what the subject (sujeto) is doing.
    3. Verbs can be of:
      • Action
      • Linking
        • ¬¬ … an action verb… EXPRESSES ACTION!
        • :D linking verbs… DO NOT EXPRESS ACTION. Instead, they connect the subject of a verb to additional information about the subject. Look at the examples below:
          • Mario IS a computer hacker.
          • IS, is an action? How do you is? YOU CANT!!!! You can buy, run, jump… but you can’t is… so IS connects the subject (Mario) to the additional information about him.
    4. Types of verbs
      • A verb can be TRANSITIVE or INTRANSITIVE
        • A verb is transitive when it NEEDS a direct object for the sentence to be understood… for example:
          • Pedrito buys.
          • Does it make sense?... NOOOO!! Why? Because it does not say what Pedrito is buying. Soooooooooooooooooooooooooo!! If we say what he buys, then the sentence makes sense!!
          • Pedrito buys a sweater.
This is what I get for asking advice form my grandma
        • A verb is In transitive when it DOESN’T NEED a direct object for the sentence to be understood… For example:
          • Sheryl sneezes with violence.
          • If we eliminate “with violence” will it make sense? YES!!! With violence is an adverb, but don’t worry we wont see adverb until next class :P… so the final sentece will be…
          • Sheryl sneezes.
          • See? No need for a direct object. :D
    5. Auxiliary verbs
      • They help the main verb.
      • The most common are:
        • Do
        • Does
        • Did
        • Be
        • Was
        • Am
        • Is
        • Are
        • Was were
        • Have
        • Has
        • Had
    6. Verb phrases
      • is made up of a verb and its auxiliaries. It functions only as a predicate. For example:
