  • What is Personality?  Dictionary meaning of ”Personality’ is - ”to make-up, disposition, nature, character”
  • Which of the following helps define the term ‘Personality’? • Characteristics that are typical for a person • Characteristics that make a person unique • Acting, thinking, and feeling • All of the above
  • What is Personality?
  • What is Personality?  Personality is a collection of emotions, thoughts and behavioural patterns unique to a person that is consistent over a period of time  It originates from the Latin word ’persona’, which means ”mask”

  • What is Personality?  Personality is the sum total of the behaviours, attitudes, beliefs, and values that are characteristics of an individual
  • What is Personality?  Personality is made-up of several factors and is judged by:-  How a person reacts to different situations, and to different people, and  What impressions are made upon people, during and after these interactions
  • What is Personality?  ”Personality is the sum total of our outer personality and inner qualities”  While, outer personality helps us to be liked, accepted and loved,  Inner qualities and traits make long-lasting impressions and relationships, helping us to succeed and grow throughout our lives
  • Personality Traits  Our personality traits determine how we adjust to our environment and how we react in specific situations
  • Personality Traits  As per management concepts, -  ”Personality is the BRAND IMAGE of an individual”
  • Personality Traits  It is a combination of: 1. Physical Qualities 2. Mental Qualities 3. Social Qualities 4. Character  Other than physical qualities, all others are inner traits
  • What is Personality Development?  ”Personality Development” literally means:  Development of the ’persona’, means - growth in personal nature - growth in personal character - progress, evolution, maturing and make-up ( physical and psychological)
  • Can Personality be developed?  Yes. Any person can at any time develop his/ her personality, through conscious efforts towards the attainment of a --- ’better self’
  • Personality Development  Our personalities continue to develop throughout our lifetimes  Personality development is more obvious during childhood, when people experience rapid physical, emotional and intellectual growth  During adulthood, personality traits change at a much slower rate
  • Physical Qualities  Appearance can make or break our image  Good physical appearance helps to creat a favourable first impression
  • Physical Qualities  First impression is made during the first seven seconds  Early judgement is mainly based on appearance
  • Factors which boost physical Appearance  Appropriate dressing  Cleanliness  Good posture: Erect posture projects confidence and authority  Gesture: Create greater impact  Voice: Pleasing and clear voice helps effective communication  Smile: Indicates positive attitude, openness and friendliness

  • Outward Personality Grooming  Dress:  A proper and suitable dress for the occasion conveys:  - Appreciation of situations  - Neatness  - Carefulness
  • Personality Grooming  1. Don’t wear unirioned clothes  They make you look shabby  2. In hot weather, wear light-colour cotton clothings and socks.  These absorb less heat 
  • Personal Grooming  Don’t wear synthetic, unwashed clothes  They may cause bad body odour
  • Personality Grooming  Personality grooming is as important as what we wear  Inspite of selecting the right clothes, neglecting personal hygiene can ruin our personality
  • Personality Grooming  Hair Style: Clean trimmed and neatly combed greasy hair and a flaky scalp gives a shabby look  Facial Hair (men) Freshly shaved Mustache or beard neatly trimmed  Finger Nails: Neat, clean, and properly clipped
  • Personality Grooming  Teeth: Brushed, white & clean teeth Good dental hygiene means a dazzling smile  Breath: Bad breath is the biggest turn-off Pop a mint or a mouth freshner after every meal Beware of food which causes bad breath
  • Personality Grooming  Body: Take regular bath Use deodorant  Make-up: Use make-up sparingly Be natural looking  Perfume / After-shave: Scent should not linger after you leave
  • Personality Grooming  Posture:  Stand erect  Pulled shoulders  Erect head  Walk briskly
  • Etiquette  ”Etiquette means behaving yourselves a little better than is absolutely necessary”
  • Etiquettes  Eye-to-eye contacts  Warmth and friendliness  Warm, hearty and firm handshake  Cheerful, happy and smiling face  Empathy  Basic mannerism 
  • Mental Qualities  Mental qualities are equally important to impress others
  • Alertness  It is the presence of mind  - What to say?  - How to say?  - When to say?
  • Immagination  It helps to read other’s minds  It is also called empathy  It helps to understand other’s view points better
  • Self Confidence  Start believing in your own ability  Gain useful knowledge, that will add to your confidence
  • Positive Thinking  Believe in yourself and all that you are  Know that there is something inside you that is greater than any obstacle
  • Learning from failures  Remember, failure is possible, but we must learn from it
  • Self Reliance  Self reliance is a vital quality, and leads to success
  • Memory  It is a great asset  Has strong positive influence on personality  Helps to impress others
  • Cheerfulness  Everybody likes the company of a cheerful person  Because, he / she transmits a positive attitude  The person must possess good health and sense of humour
  • Social Qualities  Main factors of social qualities are:-  Social values,  Attitude  Economic independence
  • Communication Skills  Communication skill is the key factor in making significant impression on others  It is the threshold of entering the very competitive corporate world  Without this skills no one can ever climb the ladder of success 
  • Courtesy  Always try to be courteous to others  Use words like:- ”Thank you” ”Please” ”Welcome” ”Excuse me”  These words create good impression
  • Eagerness to meet people  One should be an ’extrovert’  Should be friendly in nature and enjoy mixing and talking to people
  • Good Manners  This quality helps to create a very strong positive impact on personality and is appreciated by everybody
  • Character What is Character?  Character is:- ”who are you, when no one is watching”  It is a vital pre-requisite for achieving a better personality
  • Importance of Character  ” Even the best of behavioral traits fail if they are not based on the solid foundation of character” --- Steven Covey
  • Honesty  One has to be true and sincere in all his dealings to win a long-lasting goodwill
  • Reliability  Always keep your promises  Say what you mean, and mean what you say  This builds reputation of a reliable person
  • Courage  Courage is the name of moral strength  It is also called ’Guts’  One should have the guts to speak and face truth.  ”Courage is the ladder on which all other virtues mount.”
  • Determination  It is ”the will to succeed”  We should have the skill to do and will to achieve

  • Industriousness  It is true, ”No gain without pain”  Laziness, lethargic attitude are counter productive for a good personality.

  • How to Improve Personality?  The million dollar question is- can we really change our personality?  The answer is an emphatic ”yes”
  • Conditioning  You can’t change your past, but you can shape your future by utilizing the present well
  • Improve your personality  It is true that past can’t be changed  But, a decision right now can improve your personality beyond the wildest expectations
