  • Goodmorning!
  • My name is Nancy Verbrugghe and I’m a freelancer, advising companies around search marketing optimization, helping setting up their content marketing strategy and social media. For those who are interested, my twitter handle is nanske. AND if you twitter today about this event, please use the hash tag #searchuniversity.Today is all about search, nothing new, so let me tell you my personal online history ..
  • I’m online since 1987, so quite some time already. This is a picture of my first modem. Not really fast, 2400 bps..
  • Was internet already available? Yes it was, services like email, ftp, gopher and telnet already existed, but mainly used by universities.
  • At that time, I was connected with others via Fidonet and their Bulletin board systems. I even had my own node number and my own bbs.
  • Searching on bbs was non-exisiting. Colorful menus was all we had. You needed to know on which bbs the info was you were looking for. And knowing the phone number of course for dialing in.
  • In 1991 the first website as we know it today as launched. This is how it looked like. By the way, it’s still online. However, regular users had to wait until 1993 when the browser mosaic was released.
  • And yes, it was ugly and still no search functionality embedded
  • A year later, the first beta version of Netscape was released. The real beginning of the world wide web.
  • As of 1994, the web started to grow. But look at these numbers…. 
  • Also in 1995, Yahoo launched their portal. But no search yet.. Just a directory
  • It was a busy year anyway, also Compuserve was very active, I here I had my first real email adresswith a real dot com domain name.
  • In the meantime, there were search engines build, not all that known on our side of the ocean, but Altavista was very popular in Europe, at least in Belgium
  • In 1998, Google launched. There mission was clear: ‘To organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful”.
  • It was also the start of seo techniques like linking farms, cloacking, keyword stuffing.. Techniques we call black hat seo today. But seo was easy those days  Of course, not that much competion neither.
  • Remember these guys in Belgium? No only a very good index, they also offered webmail services, before lots of people went to Hotmail… Portal like Advalvas were very popular..
  • After having a portal as their default homepage, people were having Google as their homepage. People were started their search from their desktop computer, however…
  • These days, search starts from several entry points or networks and from several devices…
  • So today it’s about multiscreen, it’s about the right content, about social, and more over, about conversion. And that’s why you are here today, to learn how to get the most out of your search campaigns and website.
  • I wish you a very educational and inspirational day!
