  • 2. ACTFL standards
    • “ We aim to have all students meet the novice learner range of the American Council for the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) by the end of 5th grade, or their 5th year in the program. At the end of each school year we expect students to meet (or exceed) guidelines for both state and national standards for world languages.”
  • 3. Colorado Academic Standards
    • “ […] a student’s level of proficiency is dependent on both the length of instruction and the quality of instruction , that is, time spent in meaningful communication on topics that are relevant to a student’s cognitive and interest levels.”
  • 4. Objectives of Distance Learning Program
    • Expose students to the Spanish language and culture:
      • prepare them with a skill set for second and third language acquisition
      • teach them awareness of global citizenship

    • Academic benefits:
      • To sharpen cognitive and life skills
      • To increase native language ability
      • To improve chances of entry into college

    • Spanish it's the fourth most commonly spoken language in the world
    • Spanish is one of the six official languages of the United Nations
    • Spanish is a Latin language that shares indo-European roots with English so it helps us to better understand English grammar.

    • Spanish is of historical artistic and cultural importance all over the world.

    • 20 minute videos (listening and reading)
    • 10 minute (complementary activity) (speaking and writing)
    • Detailed teacher lesson plan , 2 or 3 question evaluation
    • Student folder in classroom to store their work- informal assessment tool
    • In classroom lessons (speaking)
    • Teacher enthusiasm and participation are crucial in student willingness to learn a second language!

    • Listening, reading, speaking and writing - our students will practice all four skills during each lesson
    • Spanish immersion
    • Modeling
    • Language for communication- story line (progression), not random vocabulary
    • Dynamic lessons- puppets, characters, songs, humor, relevant information
    • Integrating the use of technology- able to reach all students, appeals to new generations
