    Notes on slide 1

-OSU was established in 1868 as Oregon’s Land Grant University. The OSU Extension Service was created by state statue in 1911 -- predates the federal laws that established the national program. -In 1968 OSU was one of three universities in the nation selected to take part in the new Sea Grant program to focus on basic questions about ocean and coastal life and processes. In 1991, OSU joined the Space Grant program, focused on providing programs to support space science and engineering education. Sun grant designation originated in January 2004, established to enhance national energy security through the development distribution and implementation of bio-based energy techniques; to promote diversification in, and environmental sustainability of agricultural production in the U.S. through bio-based energy and product techniques; and to enhance the efficiency of bio-energy and biomass research and development programs. OSU, along with University of Washington, were the only two Carnegie Research I universities in the Northwest. The new, revised classification (Carnegie Doctoral/Research-Extensive Universities) includes, besides OSU, UO, UW, WSU and UI.
