What Celebrities did you see?
How is it Postmodern?
Confusion Over Time and Space
YouTube is accessible anytime and anywhere.
YouTube is available to anyone in the world and enables
them to create and upload almost anything
Once something is up, it is very hard to get rid of – it
never dies, time as we normally think of it does not exist
online….
Life in a Day
Parody, Pastiche and Intertextuality
Many Youtube videos that incorporate Parody
and Pastiche are known as “Sweded” videos
The Dark Knight Sweded
Edward Scissorhand Sweded
This term developed from Michel Gondry’s Film
“Be Kind Rewind”. “Swededing” has become an
online craze with competitions on who can make
the best re-make of a film.
As well as exhibiting a whole host of videos that
mock the ‘real’, the website itself is a parody of
the glossy hollywood institutions.
Style over Substance
 Many videos on YouTube have no purpose
or significance at all. People just like it
 What is the point of this……
Style over Substance
 What was the point of any of these (but how
many did you watch….
Style over substance...
Along with leveling the importance of media,
Youtube has also fed our obsession with
celebrities through the ‘paparazi’ style of film-
making it promotes.
This clip documents our growing obsession. It
does not have a narrative or a meaning other
than simply ‘watching’ Jennifer’s arrival at an
airport. It’s a scary reality that there are so
many channels like this on Youtube.
Web 2.0...
Youtube destroys the distinction
between film-maker and consumer.
Average members of the public can
capture a film on their phone or
camera and then upload it to the site.
Other people (usually account
holders) can comment on these
videos; therefore creating an on-line
community.
Young, old, experienced, novice; all
have a chance at producing material
that can be enjoyed by the masses.
Hybrid...
Due to the open nature of Youtube, videos
from all over the world, and from different
backgrounds can be watched in one
collective place.
There are no set briefs or requirements so
genres can range from musical to horror, to
comedy and documentary.
This hybrid nature links to the film ‘24 hour party
people’ which displays a number of genre
codes and conventions.
Bricolage...
The hybrid nature of Youtube results in an epic
example of bricolage.
Not only is there a fusion of conventions and genres;
but there is also a mixture of old and new material
ready to watch.
Breakdown between high art
and popular culture...
Youtube has resulted in home videos
running on par with professional
material; no longer are the institutions
sacred and perhaps this is a comment
on our society today.
Youtube has fueled this breakdown in
respect for natural order and hierarchy.
Twitter
How is it Postmodern?
How isTwitter Postmodern??
Fragmented Structure/Non Linear Narrative
Twitter is personally structured by posts, the network has no control on
what is said. Twitter also has posts which comment on fictional and non
fictional events.
Some of the posts are very random.
There is often no link between tweets, others can read like a
conversation
∗ Twitter has created a celebrity obsessed culture.
∗ People are spending more time on the internet than
going to church for instance and following the Bible, a
Meta-narrative which brings society together.
∗ Twitter allows everyone to have a micro narrative
and it does not suggest that there is one hierarchy. As
users we create our own hierarchy by choosing who
we follow.
Challenging of the Meta-narrative
∗ Serious issues discussed by important people are not
the most popular
∗ The audience can develop their own micro
narratives. These are not seen as less important
Challenging of the Meta-narrative
LikeYoutube it is accessible anytime and anywhere.
Once something is up, it is very hard to get rid of – it
never dies, time as we normally think of it does not exist
online….
Playing with time and space
∗ Twitter is similar to Facebook, in the sense that it is
based on status’, talking about personal experiences,
what's on their mind or just general chit chat.
∗ It can be used to make serious comments about our
society
Self Reflexivity
Contents of Tweets according
to Pear Analytics
News - 3.6% Spam - 3.8% Self-Promotion - 5.9% Pointless babble - 40.1%
Conversational - 37.6% Pass-along value - 8.7%
∗ Many of the tweets that are posted on Twitter is
generally a load of rubbish. Like Facebook status
updates they are designed to create a hyperreality of
your life
∗ Celebrities get PR companies to create and maintain
their accounts yet the audience is led to believe it is
the celebrity themselves. The tweets are a form of
promotion
∗ Issues on twitter become newsworth – The Dress
Emphasis on Style over Substance
∗ Twitter is totally reliant on audience participation – it
simply would not work without an engaged and active
audience
∗ It is allowing people to become producers/celebrities
outside traditional/mainstream methods
∗ For some people this is the key way they find out about
events – we are using it instead of more traditional
media forms like the news
Audience
∗ Twitter was created to make ordinary people to feel that they
are closer to celebrities (think Lady Gaga and her little
monsters).
∗ Without actually breaking the definite line between the two.
∗ It encourages stalker-que behave and encourage us to engage
more with celebrities
∗ Twitter has created new celebrities
Cult of the Celebrity Culture - Celebrity
obsessed society
∗ Celebrities read tweets
∗ Bullied kids read tweets
∗ Its hyper real nature and lack of connection real life
has made people loss a sense of connection/morality
about how it is used.We have lost touch with the
‘real’ – would we really say those thing face to face –
the power of mediatisation
But what happens when Twitter goes
wrong

  • 8. + Facebook is also having an impact on the way events are planned. Gigs can now be planned through Facebook and then advertised. This use of viral marketing has made it so the internet is now a key part of distribution, a massive change to the traditional model Also on Facebook companies choose to place ad’s which will be specifically for their target audience. For example in a group about rock music, there maybe upcoming gigs advertised. Facebook is also having an impact on the way events are planned. • 11. How is it Postmodern?
  • 12. Confusion Over Time and Space YouTube is accessible anytime and anywhere. YouTube is available to anyone in the world and enables them to create and upload almost anything Once something is up, it is very hard to get rid of – it never dies, time as we normally think of it does not exist online…. Life in a Day
  • 13. Parody, Pastiche and Intertextuality Many Youtube videos that incorporate Parody and Pastiche are known as “Sweded” videos The Dark Knight Sweded Edward Scissorhand Sweded This term developed from Michel Gondry’s Film “Be Kind Rewind”. “Swededing” has become an online craze with competitions on who can make the best re-make of a film. As well as exhibiting a whole host of videos that mock the ‘real’, the website itself is a parody of the glossy hollywood institutions.
  • 14. Style over Substance  Many videos on YouTube have no purpose or significance at all. People just like it  What is the point of this……
  • 15. Style over Substance  What was the point of any of these (but how many did you watch….
  • 16. Style over substance... Along with leveling the importance of media, Youtube has also fed our obsession with celebrities through the ‘paparazi’ style of film- making it promotes. This clip documents our growing obsession. It does not have a narrative or a meaning other than simply ‘watching’ Jennifer’s arrival at an airport. It’s a scary reality that there are so many channels like this on Youtube.
  • 17. Web 2.0... Youtube destroys the distinction between film-maker and consumer. Average members of the public can capture a film on their phone or camera and then upload it to the site. Other people (usually account holders) can comment on these videos; therefore creating an on-line community. Young, old, experienced, novice; all have a chance at producing material that can be enjoyed by the masses.
  • 18. Hybrid... Due to the open nature of Youtube, videos from all over the world, and from different backgrounds can be watched in one collective place. There are no set briefs or requirements so genres can range from musical to horror, to comedy and documentary. This hybrid nature links to the film ‘24 hour party people’ which displays a number of genre codes and conventions.
  • 19. Bricolage... The hybrid nature of Youtube results in an epic example of bricolage. Not only is there a fusion of conventions and genres; but there is also a mixture of old and new material ready to watch.
  • 20. Breakdown between high art and popular culture... Youtube has resulted in home videos running on par with professional material; no longer are the institutions sacred and perhaps this is a comment on our society today. Youtube has fueled this breakdown in respect for natural order and hierarchy.
  • 21. Twitter How is it Postmodern?
  • 22. How isTwitter Postmodern?? Fragmented Structure/Non Linear Narrative Twitter is personally structured by posts, the network has no control on what is said. Twitter also has posts which comment on fictional and non fictional events. Some of the posts are very random. There is often no link between tweets, others can read like a conversation
  • 23. ∗ Twitter has created a celebrity obsessed culture. ∗ People are spending more time on the internet than going to church for instance and following the Bible, a Meta-narrative which brings society together. ∗ Twitter allows everyone to have a micro narrative and it does not suggest that there is one hierarchy. As users we create our own hierarchy by choosing who we follow. Challenging of the Meta-narrative
  • 24. ∗ Serious issues discussed by important people are not the most popular ∗ The audience can develop their own micro narratives. These are not seen as less important Challenging of the Meta-narrative
  • 25.
  • 26. LikeYoutube it is accessible anytime and anywhere. Once something is up, it is very hard to get rid of – it never dies, time as we normally think of it does not exist online…. Playing with time and space
  • 27. ∗ Twitter is similar to Facebook, in the sense that it is based on status’, talking about personal experiences, what's on their mind or just general chit chat. ∗ It can be used to make serious comments about our society Self Reflexivity
  • 28. Contents of Tweets according to Pear Analytics News - 3.6% Spam - 3.8% Self-Promotion - 5.9% Pointless babble - 40.1% Conversational - 37.6% Pass-along value - 8.7%
  • 29. ∗ Many of the tweets that are posted on Twitter is generally a load of rubbish. Like Facebook status updates they are designed to create a hyperreality of your life ∗ Celebrities get PR companies to create and maintain their accounts yet the audience is led to believe it is the celebrity themselves. The tweets are a form of promotion ∗ Issues on twitter become newsworth – The Dress Emphasis on Style over Substance
  • 30. ∗ Twitter is totally reliant on audience participation – it simply would not work without an engaged and active audience ∗ It is allowing people to become producers/celebrities outside traditional/mainstream methods ∗ For some people this is the key way they find out about events – we are using it instead of more traditional media forms like the news Audience
  • 31. ∗ Twitter was created to make ordinary people to feel that they are closer to celebrities (think Lady Gaga and her little monsters). ∗ Without actually breaking the definite line between the two. ∗ It encourages stalker-que behave and encourage us to engage more with celebrities ∗ Twitter has created new celebrities Cult of the Celebrity Culture - Celebrity obsessed society
  • 32. ∗ Celebrities read tweets ∗ Bullied kids read tweets ∗ Its hyper real nature and lack of connection real life has made people loss a sense of connection/morality about how it is used.We have lost touch with the ‘real’ – would we really say those thing face to face – the power of mediatisation But what happens when Twitter goes wrong
