The South Florida Huskers Chapter, an alumni and friends group from the University of Nebraska was formed for fans to get together to watch football games and to network amongst Nebraska peers, family, and friends. Go Big Red!

  1. 1. South Florida Huskers Alumni & Friends group of the University of Nebraska

South Florida Huskers <ul><li>An initial letter was sent to the University of Nebraska Alumni Office requesting a chapter be started in South Florida in October 2006. </li></ul><ul><li>In January 2007, a survey went to all alumni in the South Florida area seeking information. </li></ul><ul><li>March 18, 2007 was the first meeting held for this new group at The Cove Restaurant (picture at left) in Deerfield Beach, FL. Twenty-eight interested Huskers showed their support for this group. </li></ul><ul><li>The group met again May 19, 2007 at CJ’s Drafthouse in Deerfield Beach to garner more support and to form a Leadership Board. </li></ul><ul><li>The Leadership Board met twice more during the summer of 2007 creating a mission statement, bylaws and electing a President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer. </li></ul><ul><li>CJ’s Drafthouse was picked as the official South Florida Huskers watch party location. </li></ul><ul><li>The South Florida Huskers were officially created by unanimous vote by the University of Nebraska Alumni Association on September 28, 2007. </li></ul>
  3. 3. <ul><li>New Chapter Formed was announced in the Nebraska Alumni Association Magazine in the Winter 2007 edition. </li></ul>
  4. 4. South Florida Huskers <ul><li>The group started small in 2007 attracting about 20-25 per watch party. </li></ul><ul><li>CJ’s gave us the dining area to gather and watch the games. </li></ul><ul><li>Red wasn’t required, but encouraged. </li></ul>
  5. 5. South Florida Huskers <ul><li>A logo for our organization was created in 2007. The logo was created by Boyd Wedin, a friend of the South Florida Huskers. </li></ul>
  6. 6. South Florida Huskers <ul><li>The logo was turned into a t-shirt. T-shirts were sold to raise money for the club. </li></ul><ul><li>A donation membership fee was also decided at $15 per year. </li></ul><ul><li>Money raised would help cover website expenses, mailings, and other associated fees. </li></ul><ul><li>Yes, we created a website – . </li></ul><ul><li>We are also on , and . </li></ul>

  8. 8. South Florida Huskers <ul><li>To encourage more attendance at our watch parties we would raffle off Husker related items. </li></ul><ul><li>Tickets were sold and then at half-time the cool items were given out. </li></ul>

South Florida Huskers <ul><li>The cool Nebraska related items (at left). </li></ul><ul><li>Each week would vary. </li></ul><ul><li>Nebraska companies would send us items in exchange for putting their website links on our website. </li></ul><ul><li>Items included books, hats, jewelry, golf equipment, t-shirts and glassware. </li></ul><ul><li>As members visited Nebraska they would bring merchandise back for us to giveaway. </li></ul><ul><li>Its really become a fun, family atmosphere. </li></ul>

  11. 11. South Florida Huskers <ul><li>The lady in red was our next t-shirt, which stated: “WE ARE NEBRASKA” and underneath “ SOUTH FLORIDA HUSKERS ”. Simple and quick design, but sold well. </li></ul><ul><li>These shirts sold out. </li></ul>
  12. 12. South Florida Huskers <ul><li>In the Summer 2009 Nebraska Alumni Association magazine, an article showed the group attending a Florida Panthers game. </li></ul><ul><li>The group has attended spring training baseball games, NFL games and the Gator Bowl. </li></ul>
  13. 13. South Florida Huskers <ul><li>In the spring of 2008, art professor Michael Hoff flew to South Florida to talk to our members about Roman history and Nebraska football. </li></ul><ul><li>Our group meets for educational events too. </li></ul>
  14. 14. South Florida Huskers <ul><li>In 2008 we created a banner that was hung at each home game in Lincoln. </li></ul><ul><li>Since we only get glimpses of the banner on TV, it is shown here for better viewing. </li></ul>
  15. 15. South Florida Huskers <ul><li>To celebrate the 300 th sold out game at Memorial Stadium, we got Runza’s sent in from Lincoln. </li></ul><ul><li>Everyone loved them and wished we had ordered more. </li></ul>
  16. 16. South Florida Huskers Runza’s were the big hit! Some people ordered two and others took them home for later. A surprise box of goodies were received from the Alumni Association in honor of the 300 th sellout. The article at left is from the Winter 2010 issue.

  18. 18. South Florida Huskers <ul><li>One of the South Florida Huskers is also a fireman. This is his tattoo. </li></ul><ul><li>It does kind of look like the fireman instead of Herbie Husker. </li></ul>

South Florida Huskers The South Florida Husker Chapter is formed to cooperate with the NAA to inform, actively engage, and recognize graduates, former students and friends in support of the University of Nebraska, and to encourage and coordinate activities of graduates, former students and friends in support of the University of Nebraska, and the great state of Nebraska.
