“The cause was worth while.” This he believed when he at-

Anarchists and Socialists, men and women charged with mur-
der, theft, bombings and robbery. He believed it as he argued against capital punish-
ment, and prejudiced immigration laws amid national hysteria and the mixture of poli-

1:00 pm The Life of Clarence Darrow by Gary Anderson
A rare treat—Sponsored by Warshauer, Poe & Thornton, PC. Earn one hour of pro-
fessionalism as you are dazzled by the life and times of Clarence Darrow!
Clarence Darrow believed it when he resigned his position as a highly paid corporation
counsel for the Northwestern Railroad to become attorney for Eugene Debs and the
Unions. He believed it as he pleaded his clients, the McNamara brothers, guilty in or-
der to save their lives after the Los Angeles Times bombing. It was the motivating force
behind his defense of Dr. Ossian Sweet when the doctor and his family protected their
home in Detroit from a mob controlled by the KKK. He believed it in the Leopold and
Loeb case, when he decried capital punishment and the wail of the mob for the life of
these two boys; and in the Separation of Church and State issues of the Scopes Trial
in Tennessee, in which he volunteered his services.
“The cause was worth while.” This he believed when he attacked man’s conformity;
when he defended Communists and Anarchists and Socialists, men and women
charged with murder, theft, bombings and robbery. He believed it as he argued against
capital punishment, and prejudiced immigration laws amid national hysteria and the
mixture of politics and religion. In his eyes, all were brothers and equal under the law.
