This winter, Grade 6/7 students at General Gordon wanted to give back to the community. Instead of giving food bank items and money they partnered with “Feed the People” put together 400 sandwiches and trouped on down to Victory Square to hand out their sandwiches to the homeless.
Turkey lunch is an annual event for Mount Pleasant. This year as snow hit Vancouver, students came together and were served by staff in the gym. The turkey lunch was a huge hit for everyone.
Each year Tillicum Annex holds their seasonal pancake breakfast. This year students, staff and parents dressed in their pajamas and served pancakes and strawberry sauce to the entire school. It was a scrumptious success.
On January 3 rd , the IOUE held their annual United Way fund raising breakfast at Churchill secondary. There was a very large turnout for this early morining event. The three goals of the United Way campaign this year are: 1. To prevent child poverty 2. To prevent bullying 3. To prevent social isolation among seniors Our overall total is just over $40,000 – we have a few expenses still to pay. The breakdown is: Workshop BBQ $5442 VEPVPA Fund raiser $5,465 VSB Pancake b/fast $2,681 IUOE Pancake b/fast $5,549 The remainder (about $20,000) comes from individual employee donations through payroll or cash/credit card/cheques. It is nice to see increased participation by staff resulting in an increase of approximately $7,000 from 2011. In Vancouver the United Way specifically supports the Boys and Girls Club, the Collingwood Neighbourhood House and the Frog Hollow Neighbourhood House, organizations which directly impact our students (see attached “United Way in Vancouver). Special thanks to Patsy Peters who chaired our United Way campaign this year.
In the wake of the tragedy of Newtown, Connecticut, students from Carnarvon wanted to send out a message of peace this Holiday season. They decided to sing a very special song called Just One Candle. http://myphronesis.com/2013/01/07/carnarvon-grade-1-and-2-students-sing-for-peace/
