  3. 3. 3 Pyramid Analytics in THE BI Survey 13 Pyramid Analytics in THE BI Survey 13 Introduction The BI Survey 13 is based on findings from the world's largest and most comprehensive survey of business intelligence end-users, conducted earlier this year. In total, 3,149 people responded to The Survey with 2,298 answering a series of detailed questions about their usage of a named product. Altogether, 30 products or groups of products received a detailed analysis. The BI Survey 13 examines BI product selection and usage among users in areas including business benefits, costs, proportion of employees using the product, competitiveness, recommendation, innovation, performance, customer satisfaction and agility. One thing that all BI deployments ought to have in common is that they should deliver business benefits. We asked several questions that helped us measure how successful respondents’ deployments had been. The combined results were then used as a calibration tool that is widely used throughout The Survey to assess the correlation between many factors and project success. Pyramid Analytics overview Pyramid Analytics was founded in Israel in 2008 and is headquartered in Amsterdam. It has offices in UK, France and USA. R&D is based in Israel, while marketing and sales are driven out of the United States. The Pyramid Analytics BI Office Suite seeks to bridge the gap between enterprise and departmental BI tools. It features three business oriented BI tools on a common platform. The three modules - bioWriter for Reporting, bioPoint for Dashboards and bioXL for tabular analysis – closely resemble the Microsoft office products, not only in name but also in their design standards. At present, Microsoft SQL Server is the only available data source. Long term plan is to support most DB Vendors. Next steps will include Oracle and SAP. Pyramid Analytics customer responses Pyramid Analytics appears in The BI Survey for the first time this year with responses from 45 users, all of whom reported using version 4.
  4. 4. Pyramid Analytics in THE BI Survey 13 User and use case demographics Product usage 69% Standard/Enterprise Reporting 31% 67% Dashboards 29% 62% Ad hoc query 33% 62% Budgeting/Planning 29% 58% OLAP Analysis 40% 22% Visual Analysis/Data Discovery 53% 22% Financial Consolidation 36% 16% Predictive Analytics/Data Mining 42% In use Planned Founded in 2008, this Israeli vendor has adopted a fresh approach to the BI market, with its product only available for Microsoft SQL Server and focused on reporting and ad hoc views. Broadly distributed among different types of users, 62 per cent use it for budgeting and planning even though it has no built-in planning functionality. However, neither does its Microsoft platform. Customers tend to use Excel for data entry. 4
  5. 5. 5 Pyramid Analytics in THE BI Survey 13 Company size (number of employees) Percentage of employees using Pyramid Analytics Average 22% 16% 17% Average of all products 62% 15% Number of users using Pyramid Analytics Median Less than 100 - 2500 More than 100 2500 25 Mean 122 Most Pyramid deployments are in the mid-market with small numbers of users, but Pyramid also reports several very large deployments (up to 10,000 users).
  6. 6. Pyramid Analytics in THE BI Survey 13 Peer Groups Peer groups are used to ensure similar products are compared against each other both in fairness to the vendor and for the benefit of the customer. The groups are essential to allow fair and useful comparisons of products that are likely to compete. The peer groups are primarily data-driven and based on how customers say they use the product. Pyramid Analytics features in the following peer groups: - OLAP Analysis Vendors - Visual Analysis & Data Discovery Vendors The KPIs The BI Survey 13 provides the reader with well-designed dashboards packed with concise information using aggregated KPIs, which can be absorbed at a glance. The KPIs all follow these simple rules: - Only measures that have a clear good/bad trend are used as the basis for KPIs - KPIs may be based on one or more measures from The BI Survey - Only products with samples of at least 20 - 30 (depending on the KPI) for each of the questions that feeds into the KPI are included - Each KPI is normalized so that the overall sample always has a value of 1.0 - The KPIs are calculated so that better-than-average products always have scores of greater than 1.0, while less good products score less than 1.0. When viewing the peer group KPI charts, note that the average for each peer group will usually be either higher or lower than 1.0 because the peer groups are all subsets of the overall sample. The products are sorted by value, the better the product the higher the value. The average is displayed as a green bar and separates the products into two groups, the ones that have performed better than average and the ones that have performed worse than average. For more details on the KPIs, see the ‘KPIs and Dashboards’ document. 6

User oriented and sporting a fresh design, the product has been implemented well, especially its OLAP analysis which has been well received. Users feel at home with the tool. This has contributed to its excellent win rate. 10
  11. 11. 11 Pyramid Analytics in THE BI Survey 13 Top ranked OLAP Analysis Vendor in chosen as standard How often the product is chosen to standardize on by respondents in multi-product sites Pyramid (1) TARGIT (2) SAP BW (3) BOARD (4) Pentaho (5) Microsoft SSAS (6) IBM Cognos BI (7) Average Oracle Essbase (8) Bissantz (9) Cubeware (10) Infor (11) Jedox (12) IBM Cognos TM1 (13) 1.15 1.12 1.12 1.10 1.05 1.04 1.02 1.02 1.00 0.98 0.97 0.96 0.94 0.85 Average OLAP Analysis Peer Group Top ranked Visual Analysis & Data Discovery Vendor in chosen as standard How often the product is chosen to standardize on by respondents in multi-product sites Pyramid (1) 1.15 TARGIT (2) 1.12 1.09 Phocas (3) Average 1.00 Tableau (4) 1.00 Dimensional Insight (5) QlikTech (6) Cyberscience (7) SAS (8) 0.96 0.93 0.91 0.86 Average Visual Analysis & Data Discovery Peer Group It is perhaps surprising that Pyramid Analytics can win out against much larger competitors. It shows customers within mid-sized companies value the product. This wouldn’t be possible with larger companies because of the dominance of the larger vendors.
  12. 12. Pyramid Analytics in THE BI Survey 13 Leading OLAP Analysis Vendor in recommendation How many users would recommend the product to others Bissantz (1) Pyramid (2) Microsoft SSAS (3) Oracle Essbase (4) IBM Cognos TM1 (5) TARGIT (6) BOARD (7) Pentaho (8) Average Jedox (9) Cubeware (10) IBM Cognos BI (11) Infor (12) SAP BW (13) 1.33 1.29 1.20 1.15 1.14 1.12 1.11 1.02 0.98 0.97 0.77 0.62 0.51 0.47 Average OLAP Analysis Peer Group Leading OLAP Analysis Vendor in collaboration How many sites currently use collaboration features with their BI tool Bissantz (1) Pyramid (2) BOARD (3) TARGIT (4) IBM Cognos TM1 (5) Infor (6) Microsoft SSAS (7) Average Jedox (8) Oracle Essbase (9) Cubeware (10) IBM Cognos BI (11) Pentaho (12) SAP BW (13) 1.42 1.20 1.19 1.18 0.98 0.95 0.93 0.88 0.79 0.78 0.74 0.52 0.43 0.37 Average OLAP Analysis Peer Group Pyramid Analytics does add some collaboration features to this Microsoft Office-like environment. 12
